Show Preview: Grimes @ Lamberts (2/29)

Date Wednesday, Feb. 29th
Location Grimes
Doors 930p
Tickets SOLD OUT!!

It’s a shame and a bonus that the much heralded Grimes is playing at Lamberts on Wednesday evening.  On the plus side, she sold the show out rather quickly, but on the down side, fewer people will get to experience the hubbub surrounding the young singer.  Still, those that adored her recent album, Visions, will probably get to see one of  her more intimate shows on this tour; you’ll all be luckily packed in tight to see her performance.  Opening the night is another excellent act, Born Gold, so don’t get all Austin and skip out on the opener. Didn’t see any tickets on Craigslist yesterday, but people sure seemed willing to sell tickets for some Drake character. Sample some joyous tunes from Grimes.

Show Pics: Islands @ St. David’s Episcopal (2/17)

Islands is an Austin Town Hall favorite. Nicholas Thorburn heads the band that creates a wide range of music, poppy in the beginning, maturing as the project continues. Islands came through Austin with Idiot Glee and decided to take a shot at hosting a show in the St. David’s Episcopal Church.

If you get the chance, go to a show in a church. It is all about the acoustics and the ambience. It’s just different.

How different? Read on, I’ll tell you and show you.

Show Pics: Los Campesinos @ The Parish (2/17)

It was a double header night of show pics for me. I started at St. David’s Church for Islands and walked down the steep hill to catch Los Campesinos. I guess I’ll post the Campes first.

I missed the opener, but was able to mill around in a very enthusiastic crowd to get some pics. This was the first of two night stand, so some songs requests from the crowd were turned down. “We have to save some for tomorrow night.”

Read on to see the pics and get a few more notes from the show.

Show Preview: Stephen Malkmus @ the Mohawk (2/22)

Date Wednesday, Feb 22nd
Location Mohawk
Doors 630 pm
Tickets $17 from Frontgate

It’s not like Stephen Malkmus really needs much of an introduction, or really needs to hand out incentives to come see his show at Mohawk on Wednesday.  He’s the main man from Pavement, who has carefully crafted a nice solo career since then.  You should go, period. But, you can also catch two great opening acts on the evening, Nurses and TV Torso. TV Torso are our local boys, banging out solidified indie rock tunes that stick in your head and echo in your ears. Nurses put out Draclua last year, a stunner of an album that really had the band turning heads…so get there to witness then in their glory. Two great opening acts and an indie legend. Need we say more?

We’ve already talked about some of the great shows this weekend, such as Islands and Los Campesinos, but there’s a solid show going on over at the Mohawk with a bunch of local groups we love. Wiretree is headlining the night, and On After Dark are opening, but you should definitely get there to check out Whitman, as the band will be premiering a lot of their new album on the evening.  The record’s titled Weekends, and it has some gems for you, so be sure to support our local scene and show up for all the acts of the evening.
