Show Preview: Starfucker @ The Mohawk (1/14)

Starfucker is playing The Mohawk. Since the show is sold out, this serves only as a reminder to those of you that purchased tix a few months ago. If you want to join the dance party, you could of course brave the online pitfalls of craigslist or talk to the “ticket agents” out front. I am dragging a whole group out, things may get messy. I just have to remember to run across the street to catch Cass McCombs for a few songs.

It is all about balance.

Painted Palms and Alexico open.

Show Preview: Ola Podrida @ the Mohawk (1/15)

Date Sunday, January 15th
Location Mohawk
Doors 930 pm
Tickets $6 at the Door

Well, with cold weather comes that wintery music I love so much, and none do it much better than Dave Wingo and his band Ola Podrida.  Word on the street is that the group will have a new album sometime in 2012, so I’m sure the set will feature old favorites as well many new songs to boot.  Last time I saw them, they pulled off the set to perfection, giving me all the mellow tracks I adored, so get out there and find your own to adore; besides, you don’t have to work on Monday!  Opening the evening are ((Sounder)) and Donkey Skin.

Show Preview: Cass McCombs @ Stubbs (1/14)

Date Saturday, January 14th
Location Stubbs
Doors 900p
Tickets $12 from Frontgate

As the show season begins to pick up, and the weather remains a bit on the cold side, you’re going to find the perfect show for you Saturday night over at Stubbs.  Cass McCombs, six records into his career, is the sort of singer you want to hear inside Stubbs, where the heat of the crowd accompanies the solemn vocal display and quiet musical accompaniment.  As his career has gone on, he’s only gotten more respect from the press, and tracks like the deeply moving “County Line” are a perfect reason for this.  Opening the show will be Frank FairField.

I’m sure that most of you reading this have heard the tragic story of Esme Barrera’s death that came all too soon.  As Esme was such an active individual in our music community, tons of great people are coming together to support her family and celebrate her life.  One such event is taking place on Thursday night on the east side at Scoot Inn.  The show features stellar local acts Follow That Bird, Love Collector, The Dead Space, Foreign Mothers, Kingdom of Suicide Lovers, Neighbor, Ichi Ni San Shi, and Eric Static.  Door cover will be on a pay you what you want sliding scale between $5-$10 with all proceeds going to Esme’s family.  Good music for a great cause.  You can also donate directly to Esme’s family via a recently created blog or buy a shirt for Esme.

Show Pics: Free Week 1/7@ The Mohawk

Things are settling back in after the calm of the holidays. New releases are starting the trickle in and the show circuit is picking back up. Free Week kept many local music fans busy and there were many great lineups. One of our favorites was at The Mohawk last Saturday. Shivery Shakes, Ghost Knife, A Giant Dog, Grape Street and OBN IIIs played inside. I figured I should grab bigfiddyonefour and have fun.

So with pints of local beer, we listened to local music and I took local pictures. Head past the break, please.

Free Week Recommendations for Saturday!!!

We’re coming to the end of the good times, and the weekend is chock full of excellent shows to catch. I encourage you all to get out and support/see as many bands as possible, as that’s what keeps our music community energized…which is something we all claim makes Austin great, so we gotta support it.  Here are my suggestions.

Punk Show @ Mohawk — A Giant Dog, OBN IIIs, Grape Street — Some of the best acts in Austin for rock n’ roll of the faster sort.

Quiet Company @ the Swan Dive — The group released an excellent album last year, so catch em’ while they’re hot.

Fresh Millions @ The Parish — We’ve raved about these bros for ages, and it’s a requirment that you catch them at least once in your lifetime. Do it now. Free.

Rock Show @ Beauty Bar — Ringo Deathstarr and Black Books, just to name a few.  Do we need to say more? Those acts alone make it worth your time!

Sample these tracks from Freshmillions and Black Books:

Free Week Recommendations for Friday!!!

The week of free music here in Austin is winding down, and for those of you who haven’t had a great chance just yet to catch a whole lot of the acts, don’t fret; there’s tons of excellent bands playing all over this weekend, so be sure to get out and enjoy the great tunes our town has to offer! Here’s some prime choices:

OBN IIIs @ Beerland — Like a cockier Rolling Stones soaked in sweat and Lone Star

Not in the Face @ Red 7 — Austin’s favorite little two piece rock act — and stick around for Flesh Lights!

Christian Bland and the Revelators @ 29th Street Ballroom — Bringing you only the best in Psych Rock from Black Angels members.

Free Week Recommendations for Thursday!!!

Things are heating up with Free Week, with tons of shows being lined up for your enjoyment.  The schedule might seem busy, but like SXSW, half the fun is skipping from club to club to catch your favorite acts.  Here’s where you should be on Thursday:

The Energy @ 29th Street Ballroom — Energetic punk band that just signed to Dirtnap Records.

Wes Coleman @ Red 7 — They call him the trashcan troubadour, I just call him a great songwriter with a dash of dirt.

The Sour Notes @ the Mohawk — One of our favorite Austin acts who continue to get better with age.

Tow the Line @ Scoot In — Former bros from Recover and the Visitors bring you some rock.

Here’s some tracks to sample: The Sour Notes, Wes Coleman, Tow the Line:

Free Week Recommendations for Wednesday

Ah, have you had yourself a little blast thus far? Who doesn’t want to enjoy Free Week?  Wednesday, in my mind, seems a little slower than the rest of the nights, perhaps giving you a breather before a most excellent weekend line-up.  Still, there are definitely some acts that you need to check out, if you know what’s good for you!

Residual Kid (8 PM) @ Antones — This is one of the youngest and most talented acts in town, so you definitely need to be there as these guys make the town proud. And, if you stick around, you can catch the Rocketboys.

Literature @ 29th Street Ballroom — Literature is perhaps one of the best up-and-coming bands, and you’ll be hearing more from us in regards to these guys in the next few weeks, as we’re working on editing an awesome video of the band. Oh, and there’s some other great groups like No Mas Bodas and Milk Thistle.
