Free Week Recommendations for Tuesday!

So, by this point in time, Free Week in Austin is upon us, and I hope you’re all out there enjoying the great local music our fair city has to offer.  There’s too many great shows and great bands to hit up, so I’m going to try and help out by suggesting the big hitters every day.  The following list is for tomorrow night, that way you can plan accordingly:

The Midgetmen (10:30) @ Red 7 — Good old rock n’ roll from a band who’ve been banging it out for years–plus they gave me $5 to put them on this list.

Guns of Navarone (Show Starts @ 6:30) @ The Mohawk — RayRay swears by this band’s alt-country sound–says they’re the best in town.

Frank Smith @ The Mohawk — We’ve talked to you about Frank Smith before, so we’re not going to go on and on about this band, but if you haven’t heard em’, go see em.

Leatherbag @ Skinny’s Ballroom — They’re one of Austin’s hardest working acts, and their album in 2011 made our Best of Texas List.

Check out the following tracks by Guns of Navarone, Leatherbag and Frank Smith.

Show Pics: OBN IIIs @ Emo’s

The original Emo’s is closing. Yes, we have mentioned it before, but it is real now. Seemed so far away when we shared our best Emo’s moments.

OBN IIIs headlined a punk show a couple nights ago. Nathan and I went to send off the Alternative Lounge in style as so many familiar faces filled the crowd. Wiccans and Video opened, but my punk-show dollars are going to OBN IIIs right now. Fun.

Head past for plenty of pics as we get nostalgic again.

Show Preview: Quintron and Miss Pussycat @ Emos (12/29)

Date TODAY!!!
Location Emos (Red River)
Doors 900p
Tickets $12 @ the Door

I know that Quintron and Miss Pussycat get a lot of love, and deservedly so, but for this writer, it’s all about the opening bill at Emos tonight.  You’ll first get to hear the Flesh Lights, a band who put out one of our Top Texas Albums in 2011, and then you’ll go on to the Manatees. If that weren’t enough to entice you, and it should be, you’ll then get to witness the incredible Mind Spiders. Rumor has it that they’re set to release the follow-up to their 2011 self-titled debut, which I absolutely played til my vinyl copy warped.  All in all, you’re going to love this show, so we’ll see you there! Could be your last time to catch a show at Emo’s Inside.

Date TODAY!!!
Location Emos (Red River)
Doors 900p
Tickets $5 at Ticketfly

The next couple of weeks in Austin are heating up folks, and I think it’s about time to get yourself back in the spirit of the city; go out and check out an incredible show!  First off on my list of great upcoming shows is TONIGHT’S show over at Emos Red River, which features several great acts with Austin/Texas ties.  You’ll get OBN IIIs, and believe me when I say that their show is nothing short of pure rock n’ roll.  You’ll also get to check out a Texas super-group of sorts, Video, who just recently released their own LP.  And opening it all up is Wiccans.  My mind has this as one of the best bills of the week, and it’s only five bucks; it’s like old school Emos all over again, so get out and rock.

ATH Council Meeting @ The North Door (12/16)

Date 12/16/11
Location The North Door
Doors 7:30
Tickets FREE!

We had so much fun at our council meeting last month, we decided to do it all over again on Friday night at The North Door!  It’s pretty much the same story as last time kids: great music, cheap drinks, and plenty of good people to hang with on Friday night.  Being that it’s the holiday season, we’ll also try to incorporate some sweet holiday jams and give away some awesome holiday themed ATH prizes.  Don’t forget that you can also partake of the great food provided at the North Door bar by the incredible Tamale Molly.  Entrance to the North Door is in the alley directly behind The ND venue.  According to the by-laws of Austin Town Hall, all readers of this site are required to attend.

Show Preview: Craig Finn @ Frank (12/10)

Date 12/10/11
Location Frank
Doors 900p
Tickets $12 @ Ticketfly

Legendary Hold Steady front man Craig Finn is pulling into town at Frank on Saturday night.  Fellow veteran songwriter Will Johnson will be performing with Finn and I would anticipate at least one or two duets before the night is over.  I doubt you’ll find a better songwriter showcase on any bill in town.

Show Preview: Mr. Gnome @ Emo’s (12/7)

Date 12/7/11
Location Emos
Doors 9pm
Tickets $8 @ Ticketweb

A band I’ve really taken a liking to this year, Mr. Gnome, are making a stop into town this evening for one of the final shows ever at Emo’s.  Providing support for the evening is The Baker Family.  I personally can’t make it to the show so I’m hoping someone can report back and let us know how it goes.

Show Preview: The National @ Austin Music Hall (12/4)

Date 12/4/11
Location Austin Music Hall
Doors 7pm
Tickets SOLD OUT!!!

Ok here’s the deal, any of you readers who have yet to see The National live in any setting, whether it be ACL festival, a smaller venue, or a huge amphitheatre, it’s time to rethink your priorities.  Having seen the band in multiple settings over the years, they are easily one of the top 10 live bands around.  Any self-respecting music fan, despite the show being sold out, should find someway to attend this concert.  Indie kids Local Natives are more than worthy opening support for the evening and shouldn’t disappoint as well.  In all honesty, I wish this wasn’t at AMH, but it should still be worth whatever you have to spend on craigslist to get a ticket.

Date Thursday, December 1st
Location Mohawk
Doors 900 pm
Tickets $10 from Frontgate

As the year draws closer and closer to wrapping up, we’ve all got to take advantage of the great traveling shows that are trickling into our town.  Thursday night’s show over at the Mohawk isn’t just a show to attend because it’s one of the last of the year; it’s a solid show featuring one of the most hard-working musicians Eric Bachmann and his band Crooked Fingers.   They’re touring in support of their most recent album, Breaks in the Armor, which really grows and grows.  Opener Strand of Oaks will be opening, and they’ve got a solid set lined up for your listening pleasure as well.  If you’re in the mood for some mellow indie rock, get out and keep warm.
