Show Review: Holy Ghost! @ The Parish (11/17)

The busy show season winds down.

Third night of the week at The Parish, Holy Ghost! for a change of pace after seeing AABondy w/Gold Leaves and Real Estate. Alex is the frontman, Nick lurks behind the drumkit. By bringing along four more, their songs come to life. These guys have opened for Chromeo, LCD Soundsystem and Cut Copy. Big shows. How did they do as a headliner? How did they handle the room?

Jessica 6 opened, Eli Escobar spun, I took pictures.

Show Preview: John Wesley Coleman @ East Side Design (11/19)

Date Saturday, Nov. 19th
Location East Side Design
Doors 600 pm

One of the reasons we run this site is that we love to support the local community, and those of us in Austin have a great event to support as East Side Design are opening their doors to the public.  They’ll be sharing their projects, but they’ll also have some of the best local bands helping them out.  Troubadour John Wesley Coleman will be there getting sloppy and slinging great tunes, She Sir will woo you, and The Early Stages should kick off the whole event in grand fashion.  Oh, and if you need more convincing besides the great music, they’ll also have free beer.  The studio for ESD is at 1806 Willow Street, so if you’re in Austin, come support the locals!

Those still looking for a great show to attend on Friday night, for a good cause I might add, should point their attention to the show going down at Mohawk benefiting the Texas School For the Deaf.  The lineup includes a plethora of ATH backed Austin bands in the form of Freshmillions, Dark Water Hymnal, Gold Beach, Great Nostalgic, The Pons, The Sour Notes, One Hundred Flowers, and Anam Milá.  We also hear that some great merchandise will be on sale and games will be going down as well.  More information on how you can support this great cause can be found over on the TSD Foundation website.  Count me in!

DJ duo Holy Ghost! are stopping into the Parish on Thursday night and I know at least one ATH staffer who is peeing his pants in anticipation.  As previously reported, the band usually travels with a band so things should be a bit more interesting than just your everyday DJ set.  Support for the evening is provided by New York based groups Eli Escobar and Jessica 6.  Power.

Show Preview: Real Estate @ the Parish (11/16)

Date Wednesday, Nov. 16th
Location The Parish
Doors 800 pm
Tickets $13 from Frontgate

I have no idea how this show hasn’t sold out as of Monday night.  Opening the night is Big Troubles, who’ve released their Romantic Comedy just recently, and it’s done fairly well with the fans, not to mention this writer.  That alone warrants attendance, yet the big headliner is Real Estate. These kids have pretty much dominated the news headlines all over the Internet since their inception, and the band’s October release of Days, got all sorts of praise.  This is the type of show people dream about, so go on and get yourself a ticket.  Oh, and to top it off, it all gets played through the amazing sound of the Parish; now if I could only get them to lower their beer prices!

Show Preview: Mark Sultan @ the Mohawk (11/15)

Date Tuesday, November 15th
Location Mohawk
Doors 900p
Tickets $8 from Frontgate

Alright folks, you’ve got to get on this show!  The rock n’ roll season, at least for traveling bands, is winding down quickly.  In a week full of great shows, this is definitely one that requires your attendance.  A lot of you might know Mark Sultan as BBQ, who used to play with King Khan, but he’s just put out his own sweet little record, Whatever/Whenever, which actually came in a lot of great formats. It’s classic garage rock; it’s the sort that kicked off the whole revisiting of the genre, filled with hooks and dirty guitar playing.  Also, you’ll get a chance to see a lot of great local acts like A Giant Dog and Simple Circuit. It’s definitely a better choice than Morrissey.

Show Review: Phantogram @ The Mohawk

The night before, I joined Nathan for Modest Mouse. The post-FFF6 hangover lingered and that show did not help. I am officially jaded.

Phantogram is up next after Reptar unleashed a silly dance party. I am feeling better. The first bass notes from “Don’t Move” kick in after the stage filling intro music. The lights jump. They move. They create. I was pulled in. I was grinning uncontrollably.

Head past for more on the set and plenty of pics.
