For all intents and purposes, this is sort of a must see show. The Drums have pretty much dominated the surf-pop spectrum for the better part of two years, and their latest record, Portamento shows a great bit of maturity–not to mention some killer tracks. Yes, I admit that I definitely had some issues with their last set over at the ND awhile back, but that’s neither here or there. I’m going to be at this show, swinging my arms, taking part in all the joyous harmonies and surfy riffs the band brings. Plus, it’s gotta sound great over at the Parish. Come on out kids.

It’s contest time kids! It seems like forever since we’ve had ourselves a ticket contest and I’m pumped that our first one in a long time is for St. Vincent tickets. So I’ll cut the crap and give you some contest deets:

Show Pics: Wye Oak @ The Parish

I chased Wye Oak around at SxSW only to be thwarted by flu fatigue and a late cancellation at a day party, but to get to see them play at The Parish more than makes up for it. Add to that, it was my birthday. Add to that, I get to bring my camera to share pics with you.

So off to the Parish we went, the Hall in a good mood, but a little tired from the week’s shows. Erika Wennerstrom opened with a set of stripped down Heartless Bastards tunes.

That’s right ladies and gents, we’re back this Friday evening with another ATH council meeting at The North Door. What is a council meeting you ask? Well, it’s a meeting of the most upstanding gentlemen on the ATH staff and their high class friends. We all gather ’round the bar while DJ Nate-L and RayRay spin the hottest hits this side of the Mississppi. Rumor has it that the last council meeting consisted of cheap drinks, tasty tunes from all decades, loose women, and tons of booty shakin’. Seriously, everyone had way more fun than you did pissing your savings away on West 6th. Don’t forget that admission is free and your ATH Djs usually kick things off around 8pm. Come say hi.

I continue to work through the backlog of show photos. It is hard to balance time behind the shutter taking them and time behind the monitor making them extra purty for you. This installment of Rocktober show pics is from The Rapture’s stop at La Zona Rosa last week.

It was an odd show for many reasons. I’ll go into that in more detail after the break, but I don’t think anyone that is a fan of The Rapture, ie everyone in attendance, left upset. As our time runs out on Emos Red River, we’ve got to take advantage of the great shows still left at the venue; Tuesday night’s set definitely fits the bill. Philadelphia’s War on Drugs returns to Austin to promote the release of another solid album, Slave Ambient. Last time they played in town, I had a great time, as their live sound provides a slightly different twist than the recorded material. The opening acts aren’t anything to ignore either, with Purling Hiss set to follow Carter Tanton, who will be releasing his new record on local label Western Vinyl. Seems like this is the place to be, so we’ll see you there.

Rocktober continues!

La Zona Rosa Rosa plays host to a two night stand for ATH with Friendly Fires and The Rapture. Friendly Fires is up first bringing along Theophilus London as the opener. Having seen a condensed SxSW set of Friendly Fires and the early ACL set from Theophilus London, I had some expectations as to what we would get. An awesome show is going down on Sunday night at Hotel Vegas for those of you looking to close out the weekend on a high note. The show features some ATH regular artists Paperthreat, Great Nostalgic, and Real Book Fake Book. Also on hand are a variety of visual artists showcasing their unique talents. That list includes Storm Foster, Ashley Carter, Aaron Whitaker, Kelly Eoff, Sam Evans, Sam Gage, Kristen Miciotto, and Bethany Dillinger. As if that wasn’t enough to entice you, DJ Floyd Pinkerton will also be on hand providing some tasty tunes in between sets. Should be one helluvan event.
