ACL Aftershow Review: Cults and Smith Westerns @ Parish (9/16)

It’s a little late for ACL reviews, but after decompressing from the week I took a moment to write a few of my thoughts. Friday night in Austin during ACL weekend is an interesting one. The energy and presence descended upon Austin by visitors and the music brings a vibe that only SXSW and FFFF can trump. After the first night of the 3-day party at Zilker, a few non-fest goers gathered to catch a glimpse of two of the up and coming acts of this year’s line-up.  See more details after the jump.  Read more

Show Pics: Junior Boys @ The Mohawk

You could tell who was from Austin at ACL by their reaction to the rain. While I loved seeing the bits of green, yellow and red on the radar Wednesday night, we had an outside show at the Mohawk to hit. Junior Boys were in town and I will freely admit that since I first heard “In the Morning”, I have been a big fan.

The rain fortunately parted sending water from the skies to areas just North and South, leaving a wall of clouds filled with lightning as a backdrop for those on the upstairs patio. And while you could sense the weather kept the crowd down a bit, I think it only kept the lesser fans away as everyone at the Mohawk was way into it.

Egyptrixx opened, more on the show and a few pics after the break…

Show Preview: Quiet Company w/ ATH DJ Set @ The ND (9/30)

Date 9/30/11
Location The ND
Doors 8pm
Tickets $10 via Quiet Company

When one is asked about local music in the indie Austin scene, most people will initially cite Quiet Company as one of the hottest up and comers in town.  The guys have been making a name for themselves for several years now and are continuing to work hard to build their rep.  This Friday, the band has put together one hell of a local lineup at The ND to celebrate the release of their new album We Are All Where We Belong.  QC are of course headlining, but let’s not forget about the stacked undercard of this show with ATH amigos Whitman, Saints of Valory and Black Books all on the bill.  If you were wanting to see the best and brightest this town has to offer, this is the place to do it kids.  Quiet Company have also put together all sorts of crazy ticket packages on their website with a variety of goodies thrown in depending on how much you want to spend

Also of interest to you kids, the ATH crew will be on hand DJing in the recently opened North Door (back bar of ND) between bands and before and after the show.  Come say hello and check out some sweet tunes when you aren’t rocking out.  We’ll be trying out some new KTTD and *$. remixes of course…

This is where you should be Friday night.  Bottom line.

Show Preview: Junior Boys @ the Mohawk (9/27)

Date Tuesday, Sept. 27th
Location Mohawk
Doors 630pm
Tickets $12 from Frontgate

In what is sure to be a great week for one of our favorite local establishments, the Mohawk is kicking off their anniversary week (unofficially) with the most excellent Junior Boys.  The band released their latest LP, It’s All True, earlier this year, and it just builds on the band’s ability to compile incredible beats with sexually tinged vocals atop.  It’s sure to give you a reason to move your feet, and for the super cheap price, you have no reason not to be there.  Opening the show will be Egyptrixx.  Let’s all make it a great week for the Mohawk, and get out there and help them do up anniversary week right.

Show Pics: Erasure @ ACL Live

So this is a little off-topic for us, consider it a retro IT Department post. Erasure tickets were a final birthday present to the wife and I was given the opportunity to take photos of the show. This may surprise people, but it was one of the best shows this year. The sold out crowd was ready to have a great time, so many overheard conversations about the last time seeing them live. The venue was ideal. Andy Bell let it loose and left most of the crowd in awe that he still has it vocally.

There are a few more comments and plenty of glorious Bell/Clarke goodness after the break.

Show Pics: The Horrors @ The Parish

The Parish hosted the Horrors last Wednesday night. It was a lovely way to break the ACL hangover. It takes a few days to get over the festival mentality. You have a craving for tall, expensive cans of beer. You constantly check a schedule. You complain about cell service.

What better way to break the cycle than go see a band in a dark, smallish club atmosphere with expensive bottles of beer? Here are pics and few impressions from The Horrors set at The Parish, The Stepkids opened.

ATH @ ACL 2011 – Sunday

The news of the Longhorns’ victory lifted spirits, Cut Copy killed it – Saturday was a good day. I was tired, yet nervous and excited. The rain, though nearby and luckliy watering our lawns, never really pounded the grounds. Sunday was a day with a few bands I knew I wouldn’t see otherwise.

Head on past the break for the final batch of images from Sunday.

Show Preview: Jacuzzi Boys @ Red 7 (9/23)

Date Friday, Sept. 23rd
Location Red 7
Doors 900p
Tickets Tickets @ the Door

Hopefully you’ve had a minute or two to recover from ACL, or from avoiding ACL, whichever way you see fit, but it’s time to get back into the swing of things. One of the many great shows this weekend is the Jacuzzi Boys, fresh off their release of the excellent Glazin record for Hardly Art.  It’s full of catchy garage pop, the sort that never fails to keep your feet tapping and your head bobbing–maybe even a bit of old school pogo.  It’s going to be an energetic little punk show, so you gotta get out there.  You can all catch, The Act Rights, Elvis, and The Early Stages kicking the show off.  I’ll see you there!
