Show Preview: The Men @ Emos (9/1)

Date Thursday, Sept. 1st
Location Emos
Doors 900p
Tickets $8 from Ticketweb

This year I seem to be in the mood to really rock, or at least to mildly rock, in so much as I just can’t go full-on metal.  That being said, one of the band’s I’ve really enjoyed is NY’s The Men (not to be confused with the Le Tigre side-project).  They’ll be bringing their bit of raucous noise our way in support of their latest album Leave Home, which came out earlier this year on Sacred Bones. Also, another excellent band on the bill is Grave Babies, who have just put out a nice little 7″ by our dear friends over at Hardly Art.  As the season begins to really pick up steam for rock n’ roll, this is just as good a place as any to get your rocks on.

Show Preview: Olivia Tremor Control @ the Mohawk (8/31)

Date Wednesday, August 31st
Location Mohawk
Doors 630PM
Tickets $10 from Frontgate

If you’ve been listening to indie rock for the last two decades or so, you’ve probably heard of Olivia Tremor Control.  They’re part of the Elephant 6, the collective that spawned Neutral Milk Hotel and Of Montreal.  They’ll even have Music Tapes opening the show, another band associated with NMH.  Now, Jeff Mangum probably won’t be there, but you’ll still get to see a bit of history, not to mention some great music.

If you’re not into the band’s sound, you can also catch local acts such as Grape St. or Leatherbag rocking across town as well.

Show Preview: Mister Heavenly @ the Mohawk (8/30)

Date Tuesday, August 30th
Location Mohawk
Doors 6:30 PM
Tickets $11 from Frontgate

It seems like it wasn’t too long ago that the boys in Mister Heavenly were here, mostly because I saw them several times, each time hoping the girls would stop taking photos of one Mr. Cera. The group just released their album Out of Love a few weeks back, and it seems like the press in general have appreciated the combination of Honus Honus and Nic Diamonds. Both guys can rock a crowd like few others, so forget about Michael Cera, and just go to the show because it’s got great indie rock from established vets.  Waters will open up the evening, so we expect to see you there.

Show Review: Handsome Furs @ The Mohawk

Seriously, I am sick of the heat. This has been a brutal summer, but everyone that was at the Mohawk Friday night braved the radiant warmth and put their energy into the show. Handsome Furs’ performance was contagious. Dan and Alexei were giving themselves to the crowd, thanking us fans for allowing them to be on stage, to perform for a living. It was too much almost, but the profuse appreciation for the audience never came across as staged or as pandering. It was genuine.

Austin’s Lean Hounds set the crowd up for the exhausting performance. More notes and some of the favorite pics I’ve taken in a while are after the break.

Show Preview: Bad Sports @ Beerland (8/27)

Date Saturday, August 27th
Location Beerland
Doors 900p
Tickets CHEAP

You all know how much I love my punk rock, and probably the best place in town to enjoy such bands, for me, is Beerland.  It’s the perfect place to catch the gritty power-pop of Bad Sports, the Texas band who’ve been blazing away after the release of their recent record, Kings of the Weekend.  As if one great band wasn’t enough, you’ll get two, with Wax Museums opening up the evening just after Bang Bang Theodores. It’s going to be cheap, there’s going to be booze, and some of the best bands around, so you better get there!

Show Review: Dntel @ Emo’s

Is it possible to live in the present moment whilst revisiting the past? For Jimmy Tamberello’s current tour, under the alias Dntel, that task has become something of an exercise in the contradiction. Only now, nearly a decade after the release of his masterpiece, Life is Full of Possibilities, is Tamberello giving it a proper tour release. By way of the tour, label Sub Pop is blowing the dust off the release with a re-mastered and vinyl reissue of the 2001 LP. The release scheduled for October 25th, marks the first time the album will be on released on vinyl, which is sure to make audiophiles and electro-fans explode with delight.  Tuesday night at Emo’s, the relatively crowded inside stage could finally hear live versions, of the now classic songs, which were long overdue.

More details and plenty of pics after the break…

Show Preview: Possessed by Paul James @ Antones (8/25)

Date 8/25/11
Location Antones
Doors 8pm
Tickets $8 @ Ticketfly

Nice show going down this Thursday evening at Antone’s featuring Konrad Wert and his project known as Possessed by Paul James.  Joining Konrad for this gritty country/rock themed show are local groups East Cameron Folkcore and Frank Smith.

In other related news, East Cameron Folkcore singer/founding member Jesse M Moore (formerly of Bankrupt and the Borrowers) is currently promoting his brand new solo record Tall Tells & Modern Lies.  You can hear Jesse’s new record in it’s entirety over on bandcamp or check out new single “Sallie-Mae” below.  It’s a promising song and album from one of Austin’s best underground songwriters.

Some of us ATH kids need a little help when it comes to the electronic music world, so we’re glad that was have BGray and Wagner around to tell us what’s up.  Apparently the show Tuesday at Emo’s featuring Dntel is the place to be for fans of DJ tunes and electronic pop.  Supporting Dntel are ATH SXSW show alumni One AM Radio and Geotic also on the bill.  We’ll let you know how it goes kids.
