Show Pics – The Calm Blue Sea @ Emo’s

It was a four band, all Austin line up that brought a diverse crowd to Emo’s Inside. Each band played a forty-five minute set giving the night a SxSW showcase feel. The show preview covered the when/wheres. The show post-view is that Red Falcon kicked things off, The Clouds Are Ghosts had a record release party, My Education worked out new material and The Calm Blue Sea are back. I enjoyed zoning out behind the camera, catching up with friends I hadn’t seen in a few months and hearing the latest work from all of the bands.

A few thoughts on the bands and plenty of pics after the break.

Show Preview: Bloody Knives @ Scoot Inn (8/23)

Date Tuesday, August 23rd
Location Scott Inn
Doors 900p
Tickets $5 at the Door

One of the bands that seems to have flown beneath the radar in the Austin scene is Bloody Knives.  Their fusion of shoegaze, post-punk, noise, ambient, etc is hands-down one of the most unique sounds in our nation, let alone our little town.  They’ll be putting on an exciting show over at Scoot Inn, and before hordes of Longhorns begin to fill out the bars, you should jump at the chance to see these guys; they can’t be our little secret for too much longer!  Also on the bill are other great local acts, The Vessel and Real Book Fake Book. Come on folks, now’s our time to get behind our local scene.

Date 8/20/11
Location The ND
Doors 900p
Tickets $11 @ Frontgate

The CAST!!  That’s right ladies and gents, one of my favorite bands of all time The Appleseed Cast are making a much anticipated stop into Austin this Saturday night at the ND.  These guys have been doing their thing for so long now and I’m amazed that they still manage to make powerful music despite some people claiming they’ve lost it.  Heck, their song “Middle States” from the EP of same title released earlier this year is easily one of my top played songs on the old itunes.  They’ve still got what it takes kids.  In other news, I see no word of an opener on the ND website or via The Cast site so it looks like you’ll need to be on time for this one.

Looking for plans Friday night?  Well we’ve got a great show going down at Emo’s that night with some great talent from our little city.  The night features ATH favorites from Austin The Calm Blue Sea, My Education, The Clouds Are Ghosts, and Red Falcon.  Every band on the lineup is one that we’ve talked about at some point or another and possibly even given an Artist to Watch tag.  We’re glad to be a part of such a great show on a night that shouldn’t see anyone making excuses not to be there.

Up and coming indie band Scattered Trees are making a stop into Austin tonight at Lambert’s and I’d recommend checking it out.  Touring and playing in support on the night is Alternate Routes.  Sure some of you may be thinking about that Decemberist’s show, but I think I’d pick this one instead.  Just sayin’.

Show Review: Arctic Monkeys @ Stubbs

The show preview mentioned the potential to be drenched in sweat. Many were. It was hot. Stubb’s staff was kind enough to throw bottles of water into the crowd that wouldn’t dare give up their spots down front for something as silly as fluids.

Alex Turner and the boys picked a helluva time to play an outside show in Austin, but touring in support of a recently released album sometimes requires scheduling to be less than perfect. It was a frenzied atmosphere, softened slightly by summer. To their credit, I recall the phrase “If you ask us, it’s not hot enough” being used to get the crowd even more worked up. The Arctic Monkeys put on a brilliant performance with openers Young Buffalo earning their deserved buzz.

More details and plenty of pics after the break…

Show Preview: Arctic Monkeys (8/2)

Date Tuesday, August 2nd
Location Stubbs
Doors 700pm
Tickets SOLD OUT

Okay, so this is a SOLD OUT show, but you know how it goes over at Stubbs; there’s bound to be some scalpers who bought twenty tickets to sell to you and your friends. I think it’s worth a try, considering what a remarkably energetic band the Arctic Monkeys are on the stage, with bouncing rhythms and angular guitar chops. And, on top of that you get to see one of our favorite new acts, Young Buffalo, who we posted about a few weeks back.  If you can find your way in somehow, I’m pretty sure you’ll leave drenched in sweat, feeling that it was worth every minute.
