Show Preview: Weird Weeds @ the Mohawk (7/30)

Date Saturday, July 30th
Location Mohawk
Doors 900p
Tickets $6 at the Door

Austin’s Weird Weeds have been knocking around our town for quite some time, and they’ve built up a pretty decent following.  This means you’ll be in for some good times, along with some great music at the Mohawk on Saturday evening.  Also, you have to get their early to catch one of our favorite acts Sleep Good, still riding high after the release of their latest album, Skyclimber. Lean Hounds will be the first act of the evening; another good act.  With a slew of shows going down over the weekend like Iron and Wine and Joanna Newsom, you’ll get more bang for your buck by ending up over at Mohawk.

Show Pics: Moonface @ Emo’s

Spencer Krug brought his current project to town to play an inside show at Emo’s on a Tuesday night. Moonface can be familiar and foreign to Wolf parade fans. It borders on percussive Electronica at times, smooth keyboard driven poppiness at others. In all, a group of ardent Krugophiles enjoyed themselves. They were even treated to a Moonface’d version of a Swan Lake song to close things out.

Pics and a few more comments about Moonface and the openers, White Dress and Flow Child, after the break.

Local musical legend Bill Baird has begun recording with yet another moniker going by the name of Bill Baird & Blank Fritz.  Bill hopes to debut some new material from the project tonight at a show going down at this studio Baby Blue Studio in east Austin.  Helping provide some additional music entertainment on the night are two California bands Range of Light Wilderness and Yesway.  You can also expect opening support from one of our favorite local up and comers Sleep Good.  Below you can also find the first new song from Bill’s new project “Wino Strut”.  It’s just streaming here, but can be bought in MP3 form over on bandcamp.

Show Preview: Mission of Burma @ Mohawk (7/22)

Date Friday, July 22nd
Location Mohawk
Doors 800pm
Tickets $15 @ Frontgate

One of the great acts that made a musical resurgence during the 00s is Mission of Burma, and since returning to the fold, they’ve kept it going.  Their musical catalog is extremely song, and they’ve written perhaps one of the greatest songs ever in “(That’s When I Reach for My) Revolver.”  I could play that song again and again, and it’s still brilliant.  If you dig the song, and aren’t familiar with the band, a great place to start is A Gun to the Head, which is sort of a compilation. Also on the bill at Mohawk are Austinites Ume and Daniel Francis Doyle.  Should be a great place to start your evening.

Show Preview: Country Mice @ Stubbs (7/22)

Date Friday, July 22nd
Location Stubbs
Doors 1100p
Tickets $10 from Frontgate

One of the groups who’ve really grown on me since I first got their album, Twister, is Country Mice.  They’re a Brooklyn band, but don’t let that fool you into thinking they’ll sound like the majority of the stuff coming out of NYC.  They blend tiny elements of pop with pure Americana sounds, giving you some warmth to your listening experience.  They’ll be accompanied by Boy this Friday night over at Stubbs, and you can’t really go wrong with two great bands for $10.  Hopefully we see you there!

Show Preview: Eels @ Stubbs (7/20)

Date 7/20/11
Location Stubbs
Doors 7pm
Tickets $22 @ Frontgate

Anyone look for some solid live music on Wednesday night should head out to Stubbs in Austin for a show by Mark Oliver Everett and his crew known as Eels.  Opening support should also be above average and is provided by The Submarines.  If you aren’t checking out Wooden Birds, this is where you need to be.

Show Pics: The Rumble @ Beerland

The Rumble was back in town featuring three local acts. Hosted ever so graciously by Beerland, ATH joined a Wednesday night crowd for the mystery beer special and The Asteroid Shop, Bali Yaaah, and The Ghost Wolves.

The Ghost Wolves raised brows, putting on a great power duo performance, even covered a Mountain tune. A complete contrast, Bali Yaaah shared their blend of dance, worldbeat and psych. The Asteroid Shop brought big anthems of Indie-Alt.

Don’t be afraid. Pics from the show after the break…
