Show Pictures: Great Nostalgic @ Emo’s (4/2)

On Saturday night, we made our way out to Emo’s for the record release party thrown by our local friends in The Great Nostalgic.  The night turned out to be a success with happenin’ crowds for fellow local and supporting acts Burgess Meredith, One Hundred Flowers, and Royal Forest.  Our dearest friend and photographer Brian Gray also made it out on Saturday to get us some fancy photos from a few of the bands.  These can of course be seen after the jump.

Show Preview: Papercuts @ Emos (4/5)

Date Tuesday, April 5th
Location Emos
Doors 900p
Tickets $10 @ the Door

If you’ve been following our site, or just the Internet in general, the odds are you’re well aware of Jason Quever and Papercuts.  His control over melodies, as well as his lush arrangements in the studio, have made me a huge fan of everything he does.  He’ll be in town at Emos on Tuesday, supporting the recent release of Fading Parade, and it’s a magnificent album, as you can read HERE. Jason’s a busy fellow, so he doesn’t tour too often, which makes this a must see show, aside from the fact it’s going to be ridiculous anyways.  Also, you can catch another up-and-comer, Banjo or Freakout, who’s been making waves over the last year or so.  Sounds like a pretty decent way to kick off this most excellent April music line-up in Austin.

Akron/Family released a crazy experimental album earlier this year and are now stopping into Austin at the Parish Friday night in support of the new LP.  Joining the band as opening support is Delicate Steve.  I’ll be anxious to hear what these new songs sound like translated to the live setting.

We here at ATH are such huge fans of Austin band The Great Nostalgic that we’ve almost taken it as our personal mission to help grow their populairty.  With a debut record so forward thinking and creative, it’s been easy to support them as best we can.  This Saturday at Emo’s, the group is celebrating the release of their sophomore effort Hope We Live Like We Promised with a headlining show supported by some other local buzz bands.  Joining GC on stage are Burgess Meredith, One Hundred Flowers, and recent ATH fave Royal Forest.  With a great lineup, cheap door fee, and even cheaper tall boys, you should be there.  We haven’t gotten around to a proper review of the new album yet, but we’ve gotten a snew preview, and can guarantee that it’s going to be a huge leap forward for the band.  Why not pick up a copy at the show?

Show Preview: Destroyer @ The Mohawk (3/25)

Date Friday, March 25th
Location Mohawk
Doors 800p
Tickets $12 from Transmission

What? You didn’t get enough good music from SXSW?  Good, because we’ve got one great bill laying in wait for you over at Mohawk this Friday.  First, you’ll get the quirky pop wonderment of Destroyer, or Dan Bejar if you like.  For his voice alone you should attend this show, nevermind the amazing song arrangements he’s managed to put together over the years.  Also, you’ll get one of our new favorites, War on Drugs, who craft really quiet, atmospheric numbers seemingly filled with secret messages.  This show could be out of this world, and we hope that you’ll head out to the Mohawk to meet up with us.  Both bands are guaranteed to be worth your time.

Show Review: Local Natives @ Stubbs (3/11)

So I am standing in line to see Source Code at SxSW Film and read the email that I have press for Local Natives.  Panic.  A quick check of the show’s stage times and the movie’ running time, I should be able to make Local Natives no problem at the sacrifice of time in the pit for Gayngs.  We all make sacrifices.  The movie got a late start, and thankfully so did the show at Stubb’s.  A very good show as those of you who have seen Local Natives will attest…

This show is totally free and open to the public with no RSVP, wristband, badge or other B.S. needed to get in.  Just come out and have a good time while listening to some great music at one of the best bars in Austin.  You’d probably be at Side Bar anyway right?  The two places are connected so come on over and say hi.  We’re also very pleased to have Floyd’s Barbershop, Dangerbird Records, and Sweetish Hill Bakery on board to help put on this event.  You can also help us promote by liking the event on facebook, Do512 and Ning.

Date 3/5/11
Location Mohawk
Doors 9pm
Tickets $6 @ Door

It really is a weekend for checking out local music isn’t it?  Tons of bands that we really dig are playing this weekend at great venues on the cheap.  Saturday at the Mohawk is one of those great places to stop by while making your weekend plans.  The lineup consists of three awesome local acts in the form of Black Books, Sad Accordions, and Royal Forest.  It’s also a special night for Sad Accordions as they are celebrating the release of their new EP The Colors and the Kill.  You’ve got some tough choices to make on which local show you end up at on Saturday night, but this one should certainly be on the short list.
