Show Preview: Blitzen Trapper @ La Zona Rosa (10/13)

Date 10/13/10
Location La Zona Rosa
Doors 8pm
Tickets $16 @ Frontgate

La Zona Rosa has a great show planned for Wednesday night in Austin.  Headliners Blitzen Trapper are of course always great live, but let’s not forget about the secondary acts sharing the stage.  So I’d suggest getting to the venue early to catch out sets by opener Pearly Gate Music and middle band Fruit Bats.  Helluva a lineup!

Our team up with Future Sounds for The Rumble in Austin continues this week with another free show at Beerland on Wednesday night.  We’re especially excited about the lineup this time because of the ATH favorites including The Great Nostalgic, The Bubbles, and FM Campers.  All three bands are some of the best up and comers in Austin so don’t miss out on a free show while you still can.  Be there!  Latest track from Great Nostalgic “Wilderness” can be found below.

Show Preview: The Strokes @ Stubbs (10/6)

Date 10/6/10
Location Stubbs
Doors 7pm
Tickets Sold Out Duh.

So the night has finally come and I’m sure a lot of you have already pissed your pants in anticipation for The Strokes show at Stubbs tonight.  From what I’m hearing, the rock veterans don’t even have an opener so make sure you get there early.  I personally didn’t feel like $60 was worth it on this one since I can see the band at ACL.  Honestly, does anyone ever remember a show at Stubbs that cost this much?  I know I know, C3 had to pay what I’m sure is the ridiculous fee to get the band… but come on!

Show Preview: Phantogram @ Mohawk (10/5)

Date 10/5/10
Location Mohawk
Doors 7:30pm
Tickets $10 @ Frontgate

I’m sure some of you people may think we’re totally crazy for talking about going to shows this week with most sane folks planning to take it easy until the big blowout this weekend.  I however feel like it wouldn’t be Austin without 24/7 music and fun!  Those who agree should head to a show at Mohawk on Tuesday night by Phantogram.  Joining them on the stage to provided opening support is Ohio band Josiah Wolf.

Show Preview: Jesse Malin @ Red 7 (10/4)

Date 10/4/10
Location Red 7
Doors 9pm
Tickets $10 @ Frontgate

It’s honestly been awhile since I heard Jesse Malin’s name.  I used to be a big fan of the guy back in the day, I guess I just haven’t heard much about his career in the music world recently.  Based on his old rep alone, a relatively cheap show by him and his new band St. Marks Social at Red 7 is a nice option for live music on a Monday night.  Joining the singer songwriter on stage is Moneybrother and Saw Wheel.  Below you can also find the most recent single from Jesse and his band “Burning the Bowery” which appears on his most recent album from April Love it To Life.

Show Preview: Ty Segall @ the Mohawk (10/1)

Date Friday, October 1st
Location Mohawk – Inside
Doors 1000 pm
Tickets $8 at the Door

In case you haven’t been able to make some of the super-memorable shows this week, a la Pavement or GBV, you have a chance to make up for that by attending Ty Segall on Friday night.  I caught the dude a few months back, and I’m super excited he’s coming back through town.  His new record Melted is a huge progression, and it definitely has me loving his every move.  You’ll want to go check him out, and you’ll also get a chance to see The Golden Boys and Pure Ecstacy in the mix on the evening too. Don’t miss it; you’ll be glad you went.

Guided By Voices @ East Side Drive-In (9/30)

Date 9/30/10
Location East Side Drive In
Doors 6pm
Tickets $25 @ Frontgate

So some band called Guided by Voices is playing at the East Side Drive-In(Fader fort from SXSW) on Thursday evening in Austin.  I hear that they are pretty decent or something so I suggest you check it out if you have the time.  Sweet indie/l0-fi band Times New Viking will also be on hand providing the opening support.  In all seriousness folks, the show seems to have some tickets still available and they are relatively cheap for such a big band.  I’d recommend getting to the venue early if you want a good spot.

Show Preview: Field Music @ Emos (9/29)

Date Wednesday, September 29th
Location Emos
Doors 900p
Tickets $10 from Ticketweb

Field Music is a band from England who’ve been putting out some significantly creative music over the last several years.  Their first album, Tones of Town, has a little bit more of a pronounced sharp edge, but they completely went off into the realms of exploratory post-punk with their latest record, Measure.  Honestly, had they not been smack in the middle of the Pavement and GBV shows, then this would have been the show of the week, but it very well could still be–these cats are that good. You will also be able to see Zorch and Gentlemen Rogues; each no slouch in their own right.  So, if you can’t make it to other shows this week, sell your 30 Seconds to Mars tickets and go see these bands!
