Helio Sequence @ The Mohawk (6/4)

heliosequenceOne of Sub Pop’s great bands, Helio Sequence, will be making their way to the stage at The Mohawk this Thursday night, in what is sure to be another beautiful set from the band. Last year’s Keep Your Eyes Ahead was one of the more quiet albums that grew as the year wore into it’s final season.  They’ll be taking the stage with D*R*I* and Low Line Caller. Doors to the show open at 8 PM and you can purchase tickets by heading over to Transmission Entertainment.

Rarest of Them All Party @ The Long Center – 6/3

gruposBefore you decide to hit up Passion Pit at Emos on June 3rd, you might want to stroll on over to the Long Center where Austin’s Rare Magazine will be hosting a little gathering of local rareties, and what could be more rare than great music here in Austin? Aside from local food vendors handing out booze and food for free, you can catch tunes from great Austin bands such as Grupo Fantasma, Harlem and White Denim. You can snag yourself a pair of tickets for this evening by heading here.

Passion Pit @ Emos – 6/3

passionpitPassion Pit seems to have been on the tongues of every person discussing music this year, and they return to Austin to show us what they have, in the live setting at Emos that is. Along with them they bring Harlem Shakes and Cale Parks, two bands who have been making waves across the country with delightful albums of their own. Be sure to catch this show, for if the band explodes, you likely won’t catch them in this sort of semi-intimate setting again.

Black Moth Super Rainbow @ Mohawk – 6/2

sevenbellsIt’s the beginning of a killer week of live music here in Austin, and the town is going to start it off with a great set from various noise-makers.  Black Moth Super Rainbow headline this show at Mohawk, closing with their electronic noise fusion. Local greats Balmorhea open this show, and they’re sure to be the quieter set of the evening. Don’t forget the middle band, School of Seven Bells, will bring their precious space-pop amidst the two acts, rounding out an evening of solid tunes.

The Virgins @ Emo’s (5/27)

15982495-15982498-slargeThe Virgins are a band receiving some positive press recently as the music world becomes more and more fascinated with dance/pop/garage bands.  Not too sure about what the band brings to the table as far as live sets go, but I do know that their single is catchy as hell.  Touring support for this Emo’s show is pretty solid with Lissy Trullie and Anya Marina both on the bill.  Tickets are on sale now for $12 and show starts at 9.

Pilot Speed

pilotspeedPilot Speed is a band that we’re running late on posting about, but now is a great time as they’ll be stopping through Austin on Tuesday.  The Canadian act is currently touring in support of their brand new LP Wooden Bones (Windup Records) which has been receiving some quiet buzz around the blogging world.  Check out this single “Put the Phone Down” and if you likes, head over to Emo’s on Tuesday to catch the Pilot Speed live show.  Jeff Hanson is headlining that one.

Meat Puppets @ Waterloo Today!

20070823music_meatpuppets_500In the mid-eighties, Greg Ginn’s SST Records built up an incredible reputation for raucous punk bands by the likes of Husker Du, Minutemen, & Descendents.  Phoenix’s Meat Puppets stood out from the manic pack, combining a unique blend of punk, country, and psychedelic rock.  The Pups still have a loyal fan base in Austin tracing back to the good ol’ days of Liberty Lunch.  To comemorate the release of their new record Sewn Together, Meat Puppets will be playing a free in-store at Waterloo Records.  Be there at 5… Free keg beer!  Here’s latest single “Rotten Shame”.
