ACL 2013: Weekend One In Pictures

I’ll take things seen at a festival for $1000, Alex.

Weekend One of ACL was nothing but fun. Hopefully, you followed along on the intarwebs with the Twitter and Bookface. Me and the people I like a lot spent time in the sun, luckily. It was like a fest of two halves split by a cold front. Oppressing heat and humidity dominated until about 3pm on Saturday and after that, Chamber of Commerce. I will be making a #dontmovehere flag for next year just in case the stars align to give us that glorious cold front of blue skies.

I loved Wild Cub, Electric Six, Lionel Richie, Depeche Mode and The Cure. The collection of photos includes plenty of random revelers that we know as festival people. Click through for a couple extra notes and plenty of pics. See if you can find yourself…

Shows are coming fast and quick around here in Austin, and a this week seems jam packed with great events. Those of you with a heavy-hand should definitely keep your eyes on this Hanni El Khatib show at the Parish on Friday night.  The headliner is out in support of Head in the Dirt, which is a raucous affair of hooks and bangers.  Even more important is that Bass Drum of Death will be opening the evening for you all.  Their riotous live shows are something of legend around here…almost as legendary as their phenomenal recorded output. I bet the night’s loud in the best way possible. Join us won’t you!

Formerly Follow That Bird, Austin’s Mirror Travel are prepared to make waves all across the United States.  Their new album, Mexico, is being released tomorrow by Modern Outsider, which happens to coincide with their tour kick off set over at Hotel Vegas.  You’ve got to be there to check out these great new tunes, and to show support by buying things so they can pay for gas as they conquer the States. They’ll be joined by Suspirians and RF Shannon on the night, making it an event you can’t miss.  Plus, it’s indoors, so you have a chance to stay dry during a rock show. Be there or be square, says I.

ACL Weekend 2 Highlights: Friday (10.11)

Walking into the park this past Friday, I should have seen the warning signs; there was a light drizzling rain as I made my way over to the Samsung Stage to catch Wild Nothing.  It would rain off and on throughout the day, though the weather remained clear until the evening sets. We saw some jams, we did things to our livers.

Read on for my highlights of the day and some snap shots of our man, B.Gray.

Show Review: Local Natives ACL Taping (10/10)

_DSC5337

Riding high on the waves of their stunning sophomore release, Hummingbird, Local Natives, from Los Angeles, took the familiar stage of the Moody Theater to a fairly enthusiastic crowd. Sandwiched between the two ACL festival weekends there was chitchat amongst those who had seen the group on the big stage last Friday, who would be seeing them the second weekend, or those who were just lucky enough to catch them at such an intimate venue. Having taken advantage of this bands’ delight in playing in Austin, I knew we were in for a real treat, as these gentlemen pack a great deal of passion and energy into their live shows, and Thursday night was no disappointment.

Show Preview: Wavves @ Antones (10.10)

Wavves

Date Thursday, October 10th
Location Antones
Doors 9:00 PM
Tickets $20

So, if I were going to have one complaint about ACL, it would be fairly minor; it would be that the punk rock genre is fairly underrepresented at the fest.  Sure, we have FIDLAR, and maybe Parquet Courts, but by and large, we’ll miss my favorite genre. But, ACL knows how to do things right, as they bring you a killer rock n’ roll show from Wavves over at Antones.  The wily bunch of beach rockers will be accompanied by two of our other favorite acts…Jacuzzi Boys and King Tuff.  It’s going to be a noisy night filled with slamming into your neighbor, spilled beer, and an over all sense of joy.  I suggest you hit this gig up.

Date 10/11/13
Location Mohawk
Doors 8pm
Tickets $15 @ Mohawk App

Non-festival goers have some nice options for live music this week in and around Austin.  One of the best choices has to be The Dodos playing at local favorite venue Mohawk.  Joining the indie mainstays are Dustin Wong and Daniel Francis Boyle.  Having seen The Dodos several times before in the live setting, I can tell you that you won’t be disappointed if you scoop up a ticket to this show.

Show Review: Neko Case ACL Taping (10/9)

The folks that run Austin City Limits, the real Austin City Limits, ya know, the TV show approaching forty years of bringing bands into your living room, always take advantage of artists just sitting around before, between or after a festival weekend. Neko Case is one such artist and I was delighted to see and more importantly hear her taping because of conflicts on the Sunday nights at Zilker.

This isn’t her first taping, so that means mostly material from the last two albums. I’m really liking Worse Things Get, The Harder I Fight, The Harder I Fight, The More I Love You and we gave Middle Cyclone four stars back in the day.

Read on for thoughts on her set and a few pics of the event…
