After the excellent release of It’s Up to Emma, Scout Niblett‘s show at the Mohawk on Tuesday evening is going to be something really special.  The album received tons of praise from the heavy-hitters, demonstrating that Scout’s had a great return to form.  You’d be remiss if you completely ignored the songtress as she rolls into town this week. You can listen to her cover of “No Scrubs” below, just to sample her voice and style.  Also joining the show will be Some Say Leland and The Cocker Spaniels.  Cheap price, great bands and Mohawk pretty much make it a three for three hit!

Show Review: Ty Segall @ The Mohawk (8/27)

Ty Segall may as well just move to Austin and live at the condos across the street from The Mohawk. It would shorten his commute. Why do all that touring? I have a feeling, plenty of fans would be fine with it.

Ty is supporting his latest effort, a solo record called Sleeper that is a bit of a surprise to many fans. As you can read in Nathan’s review, the album has Ty picking up the acoustic guitar for a good majority of the songs, a first for some time. I have gotten used to going to Ty Segall Band shows and bracing my ribs for the inevitable crowd crush that would happen behind me while snapping a few pics. But how would the faithful react to this more personal side of Ty playing Sleeper in its entirety?

Read on for more thoughts on Ty and the openers Hidden Ritual and Holy Wave with plenty of pics…

Show Preview: Majical Cloudz @ Red 7 (8/31)

Majical Cloudz

Date 8/31
Location Red 7
Doors 9pm
Tickets $10 @ Transmission

Majical Cloudz burst on to the scene earlier this year with the release of their stellar album ImpersonatorWith all the positive buzz created from that release, I’d think that their show going down at Red 7 on Saturday night would be highly anticipated by music fans in town.  To make this even more enticing, ATH favorites Moon King will also be on hand providing opening support.  Nasty Nate did an interview with those guys that you should also check out.  See ya there?

Ty Segall

Date Tuesday, August 27th
Location Mohawk
Doors 6:30
Tickets $12 from Transmission

Well, it seems like he was just here, but now that Ty Segall has released the most excellent Sleeper, he wants to play all those tracks for you.  It might make for a completely different show, as there’s a softer side to the record, which I raved about last week. You should probably buy tickets as soon as you see this; his shows usually sell out.  He’ll be accompanied by Holy Wave and Hidden Ritual…two local acts that always deserve your attention and support.  For those use to Ty’s walls of noise, let’s all go see how he offers the more subdued to the crowd; I’m sure he’ll win us all over regardless.

Show Review: Kurt Vile @ Mohawk (8/20)

The crowd filled into Mohawk on a warm August evening, selling out for one of the most popular names in the indie realm, Kurt Vile. He came into town behind praise for Wakin’ on a Pretty Daze, his latest album; he was supported by Sonny and the Sunsets

I probably had different feelings than most leaving the night, so you can read those thoughts, or just check out the great photo work of our boy Brian Gray.

Date 8/22/13
Location Stubbs
Doors 10pm
Tickets $15 @ Door or $8 w/ CWK Ticket

So as we create this post, and you read this, tickets are probably going pretty fast so you better get a move on.  Just posted a few hours ago is a rare performance by local band Okkervil River at smaller venue Stubbs on the inside stage.  To be blunt, I could honestly care less about seeing Cold War Kids play their new material, but a ticket to that show will get you into this one.  Those not attending the CWK show, I recommend buying now and getting yourself in line super early.

Show Pics: Young Girls @ Parish Underground (8/16)

Was it worth the wait?

Sometimes, you get so jacked up about seeing a headliner that it gets hard to deal with opening bands, antsy for the dancy. Last Friday was one such night. We all like the gents in Young Girls. They get silly and are ready to party. Nathan convinced them to put out their pending 7″ on Austin Town Hall Records. How about that?

ATH went to Parish Underground and checked out the new material from one of our current favorite acts. I took pics and grabbed a little video sample of their inevitable hit.

Our apologies for the short notice on this one, but we feel the need to let you know about such a great show regardless of timeliness.  So tonight you should head on down to Mohawk for a great dual bill featuring Kurt Vile & The Violators along with Polyvinyl vet Sonny & the Sunsets.  It’s rare that you’ll find a bill in town with not one, but two solid indie rock n roll acts so we suggest you make the most of this rare opportunity.  Ya dig?

Show Preview: Pharaohs @ Mohawk (8/19)

PharaohsI know Alex Bleeker of Real Estate is playing over at Hotel Vegas, but I think I’m going local Monday night by checking out the great acts featured at the Mohawk.  I can rave on and one about Eets Feats, which features members of Low Times, or I could talk about the connection between The Shine Brothers and Black Angels. I might even want to talk about exciting new Austin act, God’s Gun, but of course, I’m going back to love on Pharaohs. This isn’t because the other bands aren’t incredible (they are), but because one of my favorite local acts has also just released a new video for their track “Come And Get It;” ou can watch it HERE. The track is super local; it was filmed by Jon Chamberlain of Rubberneck Mag, and features Steven of Sweet Talk/Jonly Bonly fame.  Seems like you should get to the Mohawk tonight: doors are at 9.

Show Preview: Young Girls

younggirlsI know a lot of you think that heading to My Bloody Valentine is the smart choice Friday night, but we’ve got something better for you…at least as far as your wallet is concerned. There are some great local acts playing over at Parish, including up-and-comers, Empire Machines, as well as 3D Friends and El Paso’s Mattox  But, my money is on our friends from Young Girls stealing the show.  They’re in the process of recording new tracks, and they’ve already been playing some of those new hits for us all–guaranteed fun! Not only should our recommendation set things going, but it’s only $5! Super cheap, super fun. We’ll be there.
