Date 4/27/13
Location Emo’s East
Doors 9pm
Tickets SOLD OUT!

It’s Psych Fest weekend in Austin, but that doesn’t mean that other show options aren’t in abundance for those of you who missed the boat on festival tickets.  For this guy, the best “other” show in town would have to be Foals playing to a sold out crowd at Emo’s on Riverside.  On top of the great headliner, the undercard is also stacked with ATH favorite Surfer Blood in direct support with Blondfire opening for all.  See you there?

Show Preview: Youth Lagoon @ Mohawk (4.24)

Date Wednesday, April 24th
Location Mohawk
Doors 6:30
Tickets $15 from Mohawk

It seems like almost a no-brainer that the Youth Lagoon show will be the event of the week (excluding the Grape St. record release afterwards). Trevor Powers and his project have garnered a huge following, and with the release of Wondrous Bughouse, appreciation for the band has grown. I’m excited that he’s been bringing a band along with him, which should flesh out the sound quite a bit.  But, do yourself a favor and don’t skip out on the opener Magical Cloudz, a recent signing to Matador Records. We wrote about Devon Welsh’s new project, and it’s powerful vocal appeal.  We’re all going to have a blast, so come join us…then tag along to Hotel Vegas for a nice little record release party.

Grape St. LP Release Party @ Hotel Vegas (4.24)

913731_645909895424336_625905147_oSo your plans are to hit up Youth Lagoon, but you can’t stop there. Once the rock n’ roll gets started, you’ve got to keep it going.  The best place to head on Wednesday night is over to Hotel Vegas for the Grape St. LP release; this is the band featuring Curtis from Harlem…seriously one of my favorite records of the last year.  Of course, you can buy it HERE if you’re not in Austin.  Just because we’re putting out the record, doesn’t mean you can miss a single of the opening acts; they’re some of our favorite, and the best, rock acts in town.  You’ve got Pharaohs kicking things off, with John Wesley Coleman and Rayon Beach warming up the crowd for all you folks. There will be balloons, A Date With You LPs, and just a ton of incredible bands.  It’s dirt cheap, so help support the local scene and come join us for this celebration.

Show Preview: Crystal Castles @ Austin Music Hall (4.21)

Crystal Castles

Date Sunday, April 21st
Location Austin Music Hall
Doors 7:00 PM
Tickets $30 from Frontgate

I’ve been really excited about this show since its announcement.  Not only have I really appreciated the growth of Crystal Castles that was is illustrated by their latest, III, but their live show at ACL was definitely in my personal favorites this year.  They blend noise, electronica, fog and lights; it’s simply compelling.  Opening up the night is Doldrums, who aren’t too shabby either.  We’ve been fortunate enough to catch them opening for several acts over the last year or so, and I can assure you that it’s worth your time to show up early.  It might be pricy, but you’re going to get your money’s worth!

Show Preview: The People’s Temple

Peoples-Temple-300x189

Date Friday, April 19th
Location Mohawk
Doors 9:00 PM
Tickets $9 @ the Door

Seems like there is a worthy show every night here in Austin, and while I know tons of bands are playing, I’m hanging my hat on The People’s Temple show over at Mohawk Friday night. This last year saw the release of their More for the Masses, which added to their already established pyschedelic blend of rock n’ roll.  I caught them at the SXSW, and thoroughly enjoyed their act, so much so that I’ll gladly see them again Friday evening.  Plus, you’ll get to throw your support behind two great local Austin acts in Mirror Travel and La Migra.  Seems like a rad way to spend a weekend night if you ask me.

SUN0124 Cave Singers

Date 4/20/13
Location Red 7
Doors 9pm
Tickets $10 @ Frontgate

Saturday night is a great night for shows in Austin and it seems like you’ve got tons of options with all types of genres represented. Yes even the ATH crew will be split up all over town, but this guy will be heading over to Red 7 for a show by long time favorite of mine Cave Singers. Providing worthy support in an opening bid you’ll get Bleeding Rainbow. Maybe we’ll see each other there?
