Austin Free Week: Friday Night Highlights

Man, this next week and a half is shaping up to be a blast for everyone in Austin, and Friday is really starting to turn things up a notch.  I’ve already caught great sets by Endless Thoughts, Politics and Parquet Courts, so I’m really looking forward to the rest of what’s in-store. If you can’t make it out this weekend, don’t forget that Free Week now goes on into next week too! Here’s my suggestions for Friday.  Read more

Austin Free Week: Thursday Highlights

I hope you’re all taking full advantage of Austin’s Free Week, despite the chilling temperatures.  There’s tons of great bands left and right, not to mention DJs and dance parties.  It’s a special time of the year when the music community gives back, so we’ve got to be there to show our love, right? Here’s my list of things to hit up on Thursday, though it’s just one man’s ideas.  Read more

Austin Free Week: Wednesday Highlights

Man, after the New Year, it’s time to get things on the site rolling. We’re taking this week sort of slow, but mostly because we’re dedicated to getting out on the town to cover Austin’s Free Week. It’s like SXSW, with Austin bands!  Here’s my picks for Wednesday night, but please, if you’re an Austinite reading this blog…go support the scene and the musicians that make it all worthwhile. Show Preview: Blockhead @ Parish (12/21)

Date 12/21/12
Location The Parish
Doors 8pm
Tickets $24

It’s the end of the world as we know it and what better way to go out than spending your last night on Earth at the Parish. Well, technically it’s not the “end” of the world, but the “Beginning of the World” according to the folks from Re-evolution Media. They have put together a great lineup of musicians and performance artists to celebrate the new era in our planet’s history, including Ninjatune‘s own Blockhead (AKA Tony Simon) who’s touting a great new LP, Interludes After Midnight. Come on out to get your aura cleansed and celebrate the dawning of a new day in style!

Show Pics: Icona Pop @ Emo’s (12/19)

Sometimes, I just feel like shooting.

I made some last minute requests with venue people and mgmt. to get access into the Marina & The Diamonds show last night at Emo’s, ended up getting to shoot Icona Pop. I caught a little of their set at Fun Fun Fun Fest. It was a party, a way too early in the day dance party. So what the hell, got done with a happy hour with photog friends and headed over to Emo’s for some synth jams and dance party anthem noise.

Look at the pretty lights. I had fun shooting…

Show Preview: Ola Podrida @ Mohawk (12/18)

Date 12/18/12
Location Mohawk
Doors 9pm
Tickets $6 @ door

It’s the holiday season so quality shows can be hard to come by, but a headlining show at the Mohawk by local favorite Ola Podrida is an exception to this rule.  Rumor has it that Dave and crew are playing some new tunes from an album they just finished so fans of the band should definitely check this one out.  Opening support is provided by My Golden Calf and A.D. Blood.

Show Preview: My Jerusalem @ Stubbs (12/16)

Date 12/16/12
Location Stubbs
Doors 8pm
Tickets $7 @ Frontgate

It’s been a big year for local band My Jerusalem.  They just dropped their impeccable album Preachers, have done some light touring, and have been picking up some positive national press.  Sunday evening is a chance to get on board and support local music with a show on the Stubbs inside stage featuring the up and coming group.  It’s an even better show with ATH approved local songwriter Frank Smith providing the opening support for the evening.  Should be a good one.

Contest! The Babies @ Mohawk (12.14)

Date Friday, December 14th
Location Mohawk
Doors 9:00 PM
Tickets $8 from Mohawk

We’re drawing to the very end of what has been a great season of rock n’ roll, and what better way to wrap things up with a visit from The Babies.  The part Vivian Girls, part Woods, super group blasts into town fresh off the release of their very excellent Our House on the Hill.  Their music alone would be reason to go to this show, but we’ve also got the benefit of some incredible openers, namely Deep Time and Gal Pals.

Interested parties can enter our contest for a ticket with accompanying +1.  Simply leave a comment about anything you want, and we’ll pick a winner the morning of the show.  Good luck!
