ACL 2012: Sunday in Pictures

This post is going to be huge with good reason. The artists were very photogenic on a gorgeous day. The lawn held together for the most part despite the rain and spirits were high going into day three with beautiful blue skies and a dry breeze.

Here is the rundown for Sunday pics: Stars, Gary Clark Jr., Polica, Two Door Cinema Club, Die Antwoord, Willis Earl Beal and Crystal Castles. I took plenty of Zef Side shots, have a quick cameo from Moon Duo and got sad because of the closed pit for Crystal Castles that was “in the rider” though none of us photogs knew that. Willis Earl Beal may have been the highlight of my ACL with a small crowd to start that quickly grew as people were pulled in by the emotion and vocal power. Wonderful stuff.

Show Preview: My Jerusalem @ Holy Mountain

Date 10/19/12
Location Holy Mountain
Doors 9pm
Tickets $12 @ Frontgate

I was always a huge fan of Jeff Klein during his solo career after his move down to Austin from New York many years ago.  I admittedly lost touch with the singer/songwriter and haven’t really kept up with his recent work as a musician.  All that being said, I’m excited to see that Klein is back in an up and Austin band called My Jerusalem. The band just released their new album Preachers and have a local show planned at Holy Mountain on Friday night before kicking off a huge national tour.  Supporting the band for the show are fellow locals The Sour Notes and Mirror Travel (formerly Follow That Bird).  Those not familiar with Holy Mountain should take note that it is in the old Beauty Bar space and was recently taken over by ATH amigo James Taylor.

ACL 2012: Saturday In Pictures

We battled the elements. We battled our livers. We battled the battles. Really happy I had a legit excuse to not watch the Longhorns. Yech.

Rain was in the forecast. The poncho that had been neatly folded in factory specifications previously dormant in my camera bag for three festivals was going to be called into duty. Two heavy bursts occurred, before and after the Shins. I was able to keep relatively dry as the revelers drank in the rain. People that weren’t there asked me yesterday how muddy I got. Apparently, the news sensationalized the few real mud holes I saw into #Mudpit2012.

Oh yeah, the artists for this installment are Zola Jesus, Gardens & Villa, Oberhofer, Metric, The Shins and Jack White.

ACL 2012: Friday In Pictures

ACL 2012 coverage continues with a giant photo post for Friday. Here is the list of artists: Los Campesinos, Patrick Watson, Delta Spirit, Afghan Whigs, Alabama Shakes, Florence and the Machine and M83.

We’ll have more on which bands did what, for sure. This I will tell you, Florence has pipes. Very impressive, as I recall early in her career being a bit of mess live. Alabama Shakes deserve their popularity. Patrick Watson (Wilson according to the lineup, awww) and his band may have been the best group of musicians. Delta Spirit is an all-growns-up festival band. Likewise for M83. But seeing the Afghan Whigs? That was pretty bad ass.

Show Review: Godspeed You Black Emperor @ The Mohawk (10/10)

Sure, ACL starts tomorrow. Doesn’t mean we get to take off from live music, especially when you have a band like Godspeed You! Black Emperor playing the friendly confines not once, but twice.

Weather did its best to cooperate. The crowd was excited to witness. I was too, I spent a little time with GY!BE many years ago, but they fell off the radar, likely due to the relative silence form the band. But with their first new recorded material in ten years, Allelujah! Don’t Bend! Ascend! seemed like the perfect excuse to mount a bit of a tour and take up brief residency at The Mohawk.

Dark, noisy pics and dark, noisy thoughts after the break…

Show Preview: La Sera/Lower Dens @ Red 7 (10.13)

With all the hubub of ACL this weekend, you’re probably looking for an alternative to the festival, or at least a cheap one.  Well have I got the deal for you! Two of our favorite artists are going to be playing a show over at Red 7 for absolutely FREE.  You’ll get to see the beautiful Katy Goodman and her band La Sera rocking it on the indoor stage just after Moonlight Gram; Katy’s not just a looker, but her songs demonstrate a sublime craftsmanship that fully came to fruition on her latest effort, Sees the Light.  Outdoors you’ll be treated to the hauntingly beuatiful tunes from Jana Hunter and Lower Dens, who will close out the outdoor stage following Jennifer Castle.  For one, the show is FREE, so you have no excuse not to be there.  Two, I can’t say enough about these bands live, or recorded, so don’t miss out on this great opportunity.

Show Review: Grimes @ Emos (10/6)

It was the first real taste of colder weather in Austin Saturday night, and I got the chance to see Grimes and accompanying acts on the Mythical Gymnastics tour at Emo’s. Even though the show sold out weeks ago, the venue announced the release of 100 more tickets, allowing the already packed space to feel even more like a weekend night on the dance floor of Barbarella (which isn’t a bad thing). More after the jump… Read more

Show Preview: Godspeed You Black Emperor @ Mohawk (10.9) (10.10)

Date Tuesday, October 10th
Location Mohawk
Doors 6:30 PM
Tickets SOLD OUT

I’m not surprised by this in the least, but the legendary cult status of Godspeed You Black Emperor remains, with the band selling out two nights in a row over at our favorite venue The Mohawk.  Perhaps this is because the group are releasing their new album (first in ten years) on tour; it’s titled Allelujah! Don’t Bend! Ascend! (that’s a whole lot of exclamatory notes). Regardless, those that search the annals of indie rock history will find that the group has earned their status, even with limited releases, so do what you gotta do and scour the Internet for someone selling a ticket. It’ll be a night, or two, Austin won’t soon forget.

Show Review: Dinosaur Jr. @ The Mohawk (10/5)

It was a packed house, about as jammed up as The Mohawk has ever been. J Mascis ambles on stage. He slowly takes off his glasses, checks the stacks, sets the mic just so and commences to blast the crowd with a wall of guitar sound. This is how a Dinosaur Jr. show starts.

Locals Shearwater pulled homecoming duty to open and thoroughly impressed the crowd.

Read on for a few more thoughts and plenty of pics…
