Show Preview: Grimes @ Emos East (10.6)

Date Saturday, October 6th
Location Emos East
Doors 9:00 PM
Tickets SOLD OUT

It’s been an incredible year for Grimes, aka Claire Boucher, bursting onto the world indie scene with her latest album this year, Visions.  While she’s put out a few releases prior to this last effort, people are taking notice, and it’s a deserved following she’s garnered for herself.  I mean, the show is SOLD OUT, so that has to tell you something.  Last time in Austin, she sold out Lamberts, and everyone we talked to said it was definitely a moving experience.  Openers Myths and Elite Gymnastics have also had a solid 2012, with the latter being pinned by many as a band to keep an eye on in the future.  I know there’s not tickets available, but ask your friends and hit up Craigs…you just might find yourself lucky!

Show Review: Lord Huron @ Stubb’s (10/3)

Ryan and Nathan gave Lord Huron an atta-boy during SxSW 2011. Tough choice for the photo-guy, Menomena or Lord Huron? Well, I hadn’t seen Lord Huron yet, so I jumped at that show to enjoy a relaxing evening at Stubb’s Jr (that’d be the inside stage).

This was the second night of their tour after an opening night in Denton supporting the pending release Lonesome Dreams, due next week. Night Moves will be opening for this stretch on the road, a nice add for a solid bill with just enough contrast in styles to make sure you had a little something for everyone.

Read on for a few more show notes and plenty of pics.

Show Preview: Buke and Gase @ Red 7 (10/5)

Date Friday, October 5th
Location Red 7
Doors 9:00 PM
Tickets $8 from Transmission

Friday nights are always a blast, especially if you can squeeze in some well performed rock n’ roll.  One of the bands coming into town Friday, who are destined to be popular, if they’re not huge already, is Buke and Gase. Their shape-shifting indie-rock even got a Best New Music nod after announcing the release of their upcoming album, General Dome (1/29/13). If you want to be hip, and you want to be on the cusp of truly creative art, then you need to get to this show, or else your friends will mock you for being the one person who wasn’t on board with the group from the beginning.  Horse + Donkey will be opening the night, so be sure to show up around 10 PM. Here’s a hit from the band.

Show Preview: Lord Huron @ Stubbs (10/3)

Date 10/3/12
Location Stubbs
Doors 9pm
Tickets $10 @ Frontgate

Plenty of great shows to choose from this week, with many of them coming on back to back nights Wednesday and Thursday.  My show pick for Wednesday has to go to indie surf/dream pop band Lord Huron.  I’ve never actually seen this band outside of their stellar SXSW performances show it should be nice to check ’em out for a full on show.  Supporting the band for the night is more than adequate opener Night Moves.  Great lineup, great venue = sure to be bad ass show.

Ticket Giveaway! + Dinosaur Jr. @ the Mohawk (10.4)

This is history here folks.  It’s not J. Mascis solo; it’s not some other line-up; it’s the old school SST Records line-up, fresh off the release of their newest release, I Bet On Sky.  We’re lucky that Transmission is continuing to bring such solid shows to our town, and they’re not just here to make a buck, they’re here to keep our rock n’ roll community alive and bumping.  If you want to see Dinosaur Jr. for FREE, all you have to do is leave us a number between 1-1000, and I’ll give the one closest to my number a pair of tickets to the show Thursday night.  Incredible openers (and locals) Shearwater will be opening, so show up early to make the most of your night.  We’ll pick the contest winner by 10 AM Thursday, day of show.

ATH Presents: Those Darlins @ The Mohawk + Giveaway

Man have we got a deal for you!  Again we’re working with the excellent folks over at Transmission to present this killer show at the Mohawk featuring Those Darlins.  Their last album, Screws Get Loose, was a winning effort, so you can expect the trio to bring their girl-pop rock n’ roll to the Mohawk on October 7th.  They’ll be playing with local boys/girls, Bobby Jealousy, but what’s more important is the information that follow:

We’re giving away a pair of tickets and a 7″ to two lucky winners.  The contest will close next Thursday, and it’s easy to win.  Just drop  a line with your favorite album of the year, and we’ll pick two folks (one gets tickets, the other gets the 7″) who most closely align to us! Good luck!  Here’s one of the tracks from the featured 7″; it’s a Rockpile cover!

Show Preview: Cate Le Bon @ Red 7 (9.29)

Date Saturday, September 29th
Location Red 7
Doors 900 PM
Tickets $10 from Transmission

For those of you fortunate enough to have caught St. Vincent last year at ACL Live, I hope you caught the beautiful songstress that is Cate Le Bon.  Personally, the Welsh musician enthralled me more than the headliner, but that’s just personal taste.  I’ve since been able to enjoy her CYRK album, and the CYRK II piece that accompanied it.  Although she I last caught her standing solo on stage, her presence was much larger, encouraging me to write the praise that I leave you with now.  Get there early to catch Troller, the opening act, who will help set the tone for the evening.

Show Preview: Mt. Eerie @ the Parish (9.27)

Date Thursday, September 27th
Location The Parish
Doors 900 PM
Tickets $12 @ Transmission

There are some venues that seem to be created for certain bands, and I whole-heartedly feel that the Parish is here to host acts like Mt. Eerie.  Phil Elvrum’s work, either with the Microphones, or with Mt. Eerie, has always been intimate and gentle.  I can’t imagine another place that would be as suited to host Phil’s work on Thursday, as the sound at the Parish is definitely going to bring you closer to Elvrum’s music.  He’s already released two great albums this year, Clear Moon and Ocean Roar, and he’ll be bringing those tunes to life for you.  If you’re in need of something emotionally affecting, then you need to make your way to see Phil on Thursday night.
