Welcome Strawberry Announce Desperate Flower

Over the last little while we’ve been hyping up Oakland band Welcome Strawberry, and today, they announce their sophomore album, which I’ll obviously be anticipating. Their shoegaze vibe still operates as an undercurrent, but like many of their peers, they’re utilizing more propulsive percussive elements to give the song a natural movement. Those rhythmic blasts allow for the noisier elements to swirl and intermingle, continuously wrapping around one another and the listener’s ears. I really love the way the vocals are done here too, overlapping and embracing a dreamy sentiment. Desperate Flower is out on July 25th via Cherub Dream Records/a la Carte Records.

Hattara Share Koiperhosia Single

Once the new Hattara song opens, you are going to want to give it a moment. Don’t get me wrong, as the tune has a light strum and soft vocal to kickstart the movement, but it gradually builds in more texture moment by moment. Once all the little pieces join in the fray, the track completely lifts off, bridging into this brimming pop blast that feels like it’s going to carry you far into the future. It’s a huge pop opus, with layer after layer of magic that I wouldn’t run away from if I were you. Glad to see the group back after their special debut last year!

Dianogah Release Massive Box Set & New Single

Wild that this past weekend at the Austin Record Convention I spent some time latching onto the few vendors and locals who had the same sort of passion about the late 90s and early 00s emo scene. We tend to find each other. Now not to say that Chicago based Dianogoh are strictly in that genre, and I’d never try to corner them, but they surely were around during that time and have a few indicators of the sound – heavily instrumental, mid-west, etc. If that sort of thing is just as much your jam as it is mine, the legends recently announced a massive 5 LP box set featuring all 4 of their LPs along with another record of singles and B-sides. It is EPIC, and for any of you genre fans (and vinyl heads), this is a can’t miss.

Orders are now live for the very very reasonably priced box set via Landland Colportage. The box set announcement also comes with this BRAND NEW song called “Dreams of Being a King.” Dig it below and melt away.

The ACL Lineup is Out

Just like all my students right now, I’m scouring the list of the released artists that are playing this year’s Austin City Limits Festival. My kids are stoked to see Sabrina Carpenter, but I can always catch a live Strokes show! Further down the poster you get some sneaky good acts like Rilo Kiley and MJ Lenderman, plus the poor-man’s LCD Soundsytem will bring the dance. You can check out the full line-up HERE. The festival is set to go down on the first two weekends of October this year, and you can grab tickets HERE.

Teethe Announce Magic of the Sale

Been a minute since we heard new music from Texas outfit Teethe, but today there is great news, with the band announcing their next LP, Magic of the Sale, along with the release of the title track. This tune operates with a downtrodden pace, which often gives the band a nod towards slowcore. But, there’s this slight jangle and build from the guitars, creating this delicious melodic center that quietly explodes once you cross the two minute mark. There are these moments when you think the track can just burst, yet the restraint to lock into the groove and let the song just billow on its own makes it the perfect feel. Magic of the Sale will be out this August via Winspear.

Stream New Music from Strawberry Whiplash

If you are on the hunt for songs that you’ll want stuck in your head, I have a feeling you’re going to be in the right place today, especially when you click on this new Strawberry Whiplash tune. It’s another single from their forthcoming LP, which is still being mixed and such, but boy, if you don’t love this tune I don’t know what to tell you. You’d probably lump it in with modern indiepop, but there’s also something nostalgic and Sarah-esque about this ditty; I think Laz’s penchant for clean pop sounds perhaps just makes it a little more pop forward, which I promise you I love just as much. No word when the LP will be polished and ready, but this song has some other tracks attached, courtesy of Matinee Recordings.

A Wonderful Release Hour a Night

If you tend to listen to a ton of new music you might occasionally find yourself much as I did when I first put on this track from A Wonderful, the songwriting project of Tim Wilson. I listened through a couple of times, and each time, I kept attaching myself to little notes in Wilson’s voice; I thought it sounded a bit like Dean Wareham (or maybe Doug Martsch), especially in moments where things get stretched out, offering this sort of magical ray of light on the horizon. Even in its simplicity, little humming moments and the hum of the guitar strings just keeps me fascinated, so I come back and find myself lost inside here. If you’re digging it, check out Ignite, the most recent release.

Little Champion Shares Suburbs + Drops New LP

Little Champion makes it easy to be a big sucker for a classic pop rock punch, especially when you listen to the slight jangling rocker below. To me, it’s somewhere between Math and Physics Club and POTUSA, as the tune embraces a bit of mundane life observations, with a quick hook that digs into you and refuses to let you go here. It’s a furious little blast of joy that you’ll want to put in your pocket and carry away with you all day. The new record, Peaks Island and Other Places is chock full of hooks and pop moments that will keep you smiling as you circle back to press play over and over; it’s available to stream in full HERE.

Alien Boy Drop I Broke My World Video

Friday will see the release of the new Alien Boy, and it’s generating a lot of buzz across the Interwebs. When this song kicks off, there’s this smattering of swirling guitars and thundering drums, setting the tone for this huge wall of beautiful noise, leaving just enough space for the vocals to cruise through coolly. The group’s aspirations were to create something akin to great classic pop rock records, such as those from the early years of Smashing Pumpkins; they look to take that immediacy and push it to the max, cranking noise that you can revisit time and time again. Check the latest video out, and grab You Wanna Fade this Friday via Get Better Records.

Brideshead Release The Light I’m Running To Single

Just a bit ago we were fortunate to share the news of Brideshead circling back with a brand new LP, and today there’s another new ditty that I hope you’ll really love. At times, the track connects with these really sharp jangles, creating this springy step that has your toes tapping and your body swaying. While those charms are classic, there’s also this more indie rock centric vibe in the chorus that takes the group’s melodic tendencies to the next level. It’s a nice little mixture of styles, sprinkling in the group’s ability to charm from start to finish. You Are the Light will be out on May 23rd via Shelflife.
