Bubblegum Lemonade Brighten the Pop Scene

bubblegumBubblegum Lemonade are no stranger to these pages, those its been a while since we’ve heard from the group. There’s something that the group have perfected, be it the casual ring of the guitars or the balanced approach between every note; it’s sincere pop music that’s absolutely inescapable. Press play and you’ll hear a song that transfers you back to the days of the purity of pop music…no little tactics, not little twists, just the best songwriting you’ll hear this week (in my opinion). They’ll be releasing their Beard on a Bike EP on July 1st via the highly esteemed Matinee Recordings.

Track Premiere: Rangers Ready Texas Rock Bottom

texasrockbottomJoe Knight, the man behind Rangers, has returned to Texas after years spent in San Francisco, and while the title of his newest album, Texas Rock Bottom, might seem like a bleak outlook upon his return, the music should hopefully carry him through. The album’s debut single, below, borders on being a nice piece of power-pop, but there’s some great literary storytelling in it, seemingly expressing Knight’s trepidation upon his Texas return. Those of us who’ve moved about quite a bit, or even temporarily, can surely identify with the anxieties that can bring, allowing listeners to further engage with this song. This song, and record, are looking for a home…hopefully it finds it within you.

Natural Child Continue to Throw It Back

Natural ChildWhen I first caught on to Natural Child, the group had some old school rock n’ roll tendencies, but they wrapped it up in a sweaty mess that made it vital in my listening rotation. But, through their last few releases, they’ve looked even further back, taking in all those classic influences, not to mention their Southern heritage to bring classic rock back into the fold. I’m not going to lie, it’s totally different than where I first met the band’s sound, but I can still stand behind the grooves their bringing to the fold. They’ll be releasing their new album, Okey Dokey, via their new label, Natural Child Records and Tapes.

Adam Olenius Steps Out from Shout Out Louds

adamoleniusThe voice of Adam Olenius has been something supremely familiar in my ears since I first heard Howl Howl Gaff Gaff so long ago, so hearing him playing stripped down tunes on his new solo EP just seems natural. That’s the thing about his songwriting; it’s seems effortless, and I’m impressed by the care put into the details on each track…such as the female counterpart present in the featured song below. From what we know, this is just a stop-gap between Shout Out Louds albums, but that’s probably what will make it so personal to fans of the band, allowing them to glimpse another side of Adam’s process as an artist. Looking Forward to the New Me will be out on June 29th via the ABWO Label.

Digging This Hazy Pop From Alexandra Savior

unnamed-47Sometimes, you just know when a track is going to be magical. In this case, my spidey senses were alerted to this track’s potential via Alex Turner’s presence on the production credits. Anyways, Alexandra Savior is a young upstart out of Portland, Oregon who is rising fast in the musical world. It’s probably something about the way her lush vocals just rest on the mix, its dark and smoky aesthetic creating a layer of mist and mystique over the whole thing. Then there are these buzzing synths and the grit of an occasional guitar part that cuts through the jangly, tambourine heavy, percussion. Take a listen and get on the rad tunes of Alexandra Savior before she blows up.

Solid Pop from Stephen Steinbrink

stephenWhen you listen to this new track from Stephen Steinbrink, don’t expect to hear new ground being broken, or something overly exciting. What you will hear, however is the perfect execution of pop songwriting. The song has a great natural melody circling around the work of the guitar, while Steinbrink’s airy vocal tones fit into the fold perfectly.Sometimes you just enjoy the pleasure of great songwriting that fulfills your emotional listening needs, and this does just that. Look for Stephen’s album, Anagrams, to hit on July 1st via Melodic Records.

Play That Reggae Music Max Romeo

maxromeoOkay, I did just spend the past 9 days hanging in the Caribbean, so perhaps I’m filled with that influence, but that soft spot for reggae in my heart makes this a vital track to jam on Friday. Max Romeo isn’t a new boy, in fact, he’s one of the few lasting survivors of the reggae scene that worked with Lee Perry back in his heyday. I think this new track from his forthcoming album is the perfect vibe, especially if you’re not too familiar with the genre. It holds onto a smooth vocal, almost a warming R&B tone, but the tune is so relaxed it’s hard not to just let the song wash over you, leaving the sun on your face. His new LP, Horror Zone, will hit on July 22nd.

More New Music from Cerise

ceriseAt this point, we’ve almost had enough singles from Cerise to get the feeling of her forthcoming album, but I think the below tune is definitely one that holds to what I’m looking for from her. She’s got this sultry smokiness to her voice; it rests on the cusp of the main mix. Musically, the song’s got this darkened edge of indie rock; I feel like it could almost be considered creative noise, were the levels a bit louder and not contrasting with Cerise herself. She’s releasing Smoke Screen Dreams on June 24th, so you’ve got enough time to look into her before grabbing the LP.

Dot Dash Are Back Already

searchlightsI haven’t found a band quite like Dot Dash; they’ve worked incredibly hard and steady through the last five years, putting out album after album…and each one worthy of your time! They just put up their fifth record in five years, Searchlights, and I figured you needed a heads-up. I love how the band’s been able to really work in so many sounds for all their releases, via Aussie tendencies, punk, or, in the case below, delectable power-pop. Filling their records in such a way keeps your listening experience moving/changing. You’re not going to get bored, with each song turning into something different for you to love. Enjoy this sample, and go spend your day listening to the rest of the new LP, out now via The Beautiful Music.

Catching Up with TERRY

terryWhile I was out of the country (or actually waiting at the airport) I saw an email with info about TERRY. I was salivating…Dick Diver, Total Control and UV Race members? So, excuse me if I’m a touch late, but this shit is rad. There’s a slightly surfy guitar chord being picked throughout, working against a more discordant compatriot guitar and vocal. There’s something about the attitude of the song, something saying I don’t give a shit, just going to non-chalatantly kick this song out…a rad touch. The band release their debut TERRY HQ on Upset the Rhythm on July 1st.
