There’s Just Something About Heaven’s Jail

heavensjailYou know, we’ve heard tons of fads come and go over the last decade, whether good or bad, but one thing that I never tire of is the traditional (in an early 00s sense) indie rock. I think Heaven’s Jail definitely has it down, which should come as no surprise seeing as they’re promoting their 4th LP, Widow’s Work. I like the way the guitar twinkles in this song, steadying the track throughout, even with it’s plucking of chords as the tune progresses. If you miss that tried-and-true sound, then give this a listen..grab the record on May 6th.

Brand New Music from Pema

alexThose of you spouting off about how Austin music is dying need to just stop. Today alone I ran singles from Slomo Drags and Bloody Knives…both better than 99% of what’s come across my desk from elsewhere. Now we have this brand new track from Pema, the working title of Alex Cohen’s new pop-centric project. She’s most well-known in town for her work with Alex Napping, but the brilliance of this track should not go unnoticed. What’s most striking for me his the strength of her voice; it’s always been great, but it’s presence in the mix is really remarkable (it reminds me a lot of Amber Coffman). I love the playful work of everything behind her voice too…such a good introduction to her new project. Look for her debut, Doublethink, via Wishy Washy Records on June 3rd.

Fresh Indiepop from Mercury Girls

mercuryYou’ve probably heard us talking about Mercury Girls…first introduced to us as one of the projects that Kevin from Literature was doing…or one of the many rad bands that played our SXSW Welcome to the Jangle party. Now, we finally get to hear some finished products from the group; it’s every bit as special as one would expect. It’s got Kevin’s signature (if you’ve listened to him as much as you should) guitar sound, while the rhythm section is driving the beat. Oh, and the infectious quality here is at least a 9.4 out of 10, maybe even like 9.6. Slumberland Records will release the new single on May 20th. Kid friendly, indiepop fan approved.

Real Deal Lo-Fi from Frozy

frozeYesterday I went on a big giant spin listening to Frozy, and their album from last year on Odd Box Records. What set me off? The video below! Not only is the song perfect, and the real deal when it comes to lo-fidelity, but it works in direct contrast with the video. Yet, when watching, it all works together so magnificently. I don’t really know how much more I can love this band right now, but all Iknow at this point is that this track will come out on a release some time in the future (hopefully later this year). Anyways…these guys aren’t lo-fi pretenders, which makes them all the better…that and the song kills.

ATX Spotlight: New EP from Slomo Drags

12801433_969823976400939_2801797464647207318_nThis catchy new track from Slomo Drags has been floating around for a week, and it’s precisely the type of jam you want to have in your music rotation today. There’s this incredible bounce to it, lifting your spirits from the get-go, though there’s an artful style in the way the guitars stab in and the vocals are delivered. Something about it reminds of Islands, early on at least. They’ll be celebrating the release of their new EP on Already Dead Tapes this Saturday night over at Cheer Up Charlies. Get in on this jam.

Beautiful New Dannika Tune

dannikaSome songs come through the stereo, and they have this immediate impact on your soul…seeping deep within. Generally speaking, those are the ones I fall for the most, which is where I am with this Dannika track today. Her voice struck me as soon as it enters, soulful and lonely; it’s matched by the solemn tone of the guitar on this single. But, while that sold me, the extra bonus comes late in the track when a barely audible male voice echoes her performance from the distance. Damn it this song is good. Play it once, play it a million times, then look for her For Peaches EP, which is being released by Solitaire Recordings; it’s coming out on May 16th.

Tonight’s Show: Lung Letters/Quin Galavis/David Israel @ Barracuda

Album Cover_Online VersionSeems like shows are ramping up all about town as of late, with a jam packed bunch of shows from locals and traveling acts alike. But, tonight’s show over at Barracuda seems like the best option if you’re looking to get out. Lung Letters features Jeremy from Flesh Lights; it looks to be a promising set from them. You’ll also get Quin Galavis, formerly (and presently of the Dead Space); he’s been playing solo looped sets lately, sometimes joined by friends, so you never know what you’re in store for…you just know it’s good. And finally, one of my picks would be to show up early to catch David Israel. David contributed to the Slack Capital compilation, and his track “Coldwar Superchild” is one of my favorite pieces in that great collection. In fact, it’s streaming below, so take a listen and love it.

Another Tune from Bloody Knives

bloodyI’m pretty sure that if you’re going to pick an album up this weekend, then it should definitely be this great new record from Austin’s Bloody Knives. Their latest single opens up with ambient noise, and then immediately blasts off into the vocal moment of the track, surrounded by feedback, pounding rhythms and a guitar that cuts right through the heart of the tune. Then it slows back into the atmospherics before shooting off again. It’s a statement track for I Will Cut Your Heart Out for This, balancing the beautiful moments with the deeper, noisier tones. One has to be careful to walk the fine line, but these guys do it oh so well. Look for the new LP this Friday via Saint Marie Records.

No Denying This New Sun Voyager Track

sunnyHere’s the deal, drop whatever you’re doing right now and check out this new song called “Ghost Valley” by ATH approved band Sun Voyager. Seriously, this song hits pretty damn hard and all fans of real rock n roll will get behind this one. I’m just pumped that the boys were kind enough to send our way. Let’s say thanks by hitting play on this one and preparing for a gem.

This track is on a new 7″ single out today on King Pizza Records.

More New Music from Benjamin Cissner

bencissnerAustin’s Ben Cissner has had quite a month since the early local release of Birds of Night, which I still think is one of the better listens to come out of Austin this year, or really anywhere. He’s got a haunting tone on this latest single, and the musical accompaniment is pretty spot-on, filling in every little spot to drive home the personal touches Ben used to fill up his debut record. This is just a short note to remind you how great his debut is, and encourage you to take a further listen to his work.
