More New Tunes from The Mantles

1885Seems like it’s going to be a pretty good year for Slumberland Records.  They’ve already tossed out the new Wax Idols/Girls Names/Golden Grrrls LPs, and now they’re set to release Long Enough to Leave on June 18th.  On the latest hit from The Mantles, the group offers up a bit of nostalgia to go with their blend of garage-pop;  it’s current, but could easily fit into the late 60s. There’s definitely an evolving spirit from the San Fran/Oakland group that has my ear perked for the full-length. Just more great hits from SR today I guess!

Beautiful Folk Style Tune From Steve Gunn

Gunn_bandSteve Gunn is a guy that I’ve always known as more of a solo artist or the incredible lead guitar player for several bands.  This new track “Water Wheel” is Steve’s first foray into full band material and I’d say he’s pulling things off quite well.  My first thoughts can’t help but imagine some of the more subtle tunes by CSNY.  You’ll certainly hear a folk influence with some great guitar playing throughout.  Perfect for a sunny drive as we ease into summer.

New album Time Off is due out on June 18th via Paradise of Brothers Records.

Bouncing Pop from English Singles

slr191I picked up this English Singles 7″ from the record store last night, so I had to share it with you all, that way you could do the same.  It’s precisely what I expected from the group, filled with catchy hooks and sing-a-long lyrics.  Just listen to that pounding drum beat; try to listen and not find yourself bobbing up and down. There’s three jams from the Sacramento act on the Ordinary Girls 7″, which I’m telling you is a must for your collection.  You can pick it up from Slumberland Records immediately!

Sludge Rock From WTCHS

2984239417-1When I first hit play on this new track “Mr. Hands” from Ontario based WTCHS, I knew I was in for something special.  From the get go, it drops into some seriously loud, in your face sludge rock that carries on throughout the song.  They like to reference QOTSA when asked to define their sound, and I see that, but it somehow manages to be even nosier and darker.  Daddy likes.

This song is on a new split 7″ from the croup with a B-Side by Thoughts on Air.  Check it out on bandcamp and order yourself a copy.

Folk from Alphabetical Order Orchestra

alphabetical-order-orchestraMake no mistake about it, we here at ATH are huge fans of My Latest Novel.  But what does that have to do with Alphabetical Order Orchestra you may ask? Well, the band is made up of members of MLN, who are currently on a hiatus, so this new project is pretty exciting.  There’s no word on any upcoming release, as this track was just recorded a few days ago.  It’s a much more straight-forward presentation, but I’ll take what I can kick for the moment, hoping to see what comes next from the group.

Nice Pop Music From Dream Sick

3069942621-1Here’s a new song called “Tiny People” from Tucson based 4 piece group Dream Sick.  I’m sure many of you have never heard of the group before, and I’ll admit that I hadn’t either until a few days ago, so let this serve as an introduction to the band for you and me.  Having just released new album Morkkis by their own accord, the band have been working hard to get the word out to waiting music fans.  At the core, these guys create some nice pop tunes with reverby swirling guitars that can create some special moments in their music.  Check out the song below and maybe get your hands on the band’s new album via bandcamp.

ACL 2013 Lineup Announced

In case you are a normal human being and were sleeping, the lineup for this year’s two weekend festival was announced. These are the bands that allegedly will be there both weekends so there is still a little room to play, but the lineup is really good. Sure, you can find things to complain about, but a Lionel Richie sing-along is not allowed to be one of them.

As leaked, The Cure is a big name as is Depeche Mode. If the organizers dare put them up against each other, there may be a guyliner revolt of 40 somethings. Who cares about Muse besides the guys that program bumper music at ESPN?

We do get Atoms For Peace, Wilco, The National, Vampy Weeks, Arctic Monkeys, Franz Ferdinand, Tame Impala, Local Natives, Grimes, Portugal. The Man, Divine Fits, Purity Ring, Haim, Smith Westerns, Junip, Phospherescent, Thao & The GDSD, Foxygen, Parquet Courts, Fidlar, Wild Nothing and Electric Six, to name a few.

Wristbands are on sale at 10am. Get in line online. Full list after the break…

Careful Pop from We Are Loud Whispers

weareloudTomorrow we’ll all get a chance to get our hands on the newest release from Hardly Art, We Are Loud Whispers.  The project of the duo, spread across Tokyo and Seattle was done via Internet, but don’t start to think that it will resemble that other mail service group.  Sure, there are some electronic touches throughout the record, Suchness, but this new single demonstrates just how careful the two are at crafting their songs.  This tune almost seems to quiet, but the underbelly of pop consistently rears its head, making the perfect listen for a quiet Monday afternoon.

More New Jamz from Hooded Fang

1874When RayRay brought you the first single from Hooded Fang a few weeks back, it was more like a straight rocker, something we could all enjoy immediately. But the second single from the group is demonstrating some range from the band, which should definitely benefit their album Gravez. This tune has more like a propulsive piece of art-pop, though it’s rounded out by some tight-knit guitar work in the background.  It’s much more explorative of a track then I expected, which leads me to believe that their record will show some great diversity.  You can grab the record when it’s released by Full Time Hobby on May 28th.

Australian Swagger from UV Race

11It’s a shame that Melbourne, Australia is so far away, otherwise it would be the first place on my vacation list.  Seems like every band I adore, or every band writing great hits hails from the city, or somewhere nearby.  The latest great jam comes from perennial rockers, UV Race.  On this new single, which comes from the group’s Queens of Punk 7″, they bring a chilled out vibe that features male and female vocal parts.  That alone would hook me, but I like the relaxed feel too, making it the perfect tune as we float into the summer. Oh, and the band will be making their way to Austin, as well as the rest of the US, starting this week.
