New Music from Night Terrors of 1927

1370I always wondered what happened to Blake Sennett after Rilo Kiley disbanded and his group, the Elected, had gone quiet.  It appears he’s been working with a friend under the moniker of Night Terrors of 1927.  Yes, it’s a bit much to say, but I’m digging the music that they’re creating. It features this folk-influenced grand ballad approach, though they are trying to diversify by offering some electronic beats in the background during the chorus.  I think the song would survive without that touch, but the soft spot in my heart for Joey the Rat allows me to look the other way.  See what you think as the band ready the release of the Guilty Pleas EP on November 5th.

R&B Influenced Jam from Pattern Is Movement

PatternIsMovement-PeterEnglish-72I’m still amazed at what two dudes can accomplish with today’s modern recordings processes, which is why I think I’m really drawn to the latest track from Pattern Is Movement.  The vocal definitely harkens to the alluded R&B touch, especially when you combine that with the modern auto-tune usage, but I just dig the construction of the song itself.  It’s got this smooth vibe to it, and as it unfolds, it offers more little musical bits than one would expect from two people.  You’ll find this tune on the duo’s upcoming 12″ for Hometapes; this is a stop-gap before the band release their new LP in early 2014.

Noisy Pop from The Fireworks

artworks-000059746286-njx1ht-t500x500What a great week for Shelflife Records.  First they sign our friends She Sir, and now they’re off and running with a new 7″ from The Fireworks.  This new single is pretty marvelous, with a buzzsaw guitar working on one part of your eardrums, while the sweet harmony of the vocals warms the other.  I love the slightly poppier attitude that comes with the outro near the end.  This is the second release for the label, and they’re pressing it in a very limited number, so it’s best that you get your hands on things before you miss out.

New Music From Smoker

n3sv_SPS1Last year we shared a new tune with you by a band called Smoker (then known as Stephen Paul Smoker) and today we’ve got some new music from the guys.  This track “Strange Ways” appears on an album of same name that was released earlier this summer.  It has the same sort of bluesy/psych-rock type soulful feel to it that we got with the last song they shared with us.  It’s definitely something worth your time.

Psych Rocker From Ancient Sky

dig12_full.1Brooklyn based boys Ancient Sky just sent their new track “Master Cleanse” our way and we just had to share it with you guys. Locked within, you’ll find some great psych-rock sounds mixed in with the almost jam session groove done well by bands like Portugal. The Man.  However you want to label it, I’m into it.

Expect new album, All Get Out, on November 12th via Wharf Cat Records.

Incredible Pop Music From Drowners

1380273_219115644916437_626854628_nIt’s rare these days for me to hear a song that immediately catches my ear and makes me fall in love with it after just one play.  This track, “Luv, Hold Me Down”, from NYC based band Drowners is just such a track.  With such a catchy tune, I’m surprised that I had never even heard of the band prior to jamming this track today.  Needless to say, I’ll be staying tuned to more from these guys in the future.  Can you such a great pop tune?  No, you cannot.

A new self-titled album will be coming your way January 28th via Frenchkiss Records.

Soft Number from Gem Club

gem_club_tonjeWeird. We’re already starting to look forward to great releases in 2014, and this new release from Gem Club is going to be on my list from the get-go. Their first single from the record is a pretty incredible piece of song construction, moving slowly along the skeletal piano that serves as the foundation for the track.  There’s a lofty vocal that soars beautifully atop the production, aided by some light string accompaniment to add extra depth to the song. You’ll be able to grab your own copy of the LP, titled In Roses, on January 28th, courtesy of the folks over at Hardly Art.  Be prepared for something moving.

Jagged Indiepop from The Spook School

FPOP156LPA bit back in time I came upon The Spook School, an Edinburgh act that had released a 7″ with Cloudberry Records.  It seems the group are on their way up, having signed with Fortuna Pop to release their latest LP, Dress Up.  On this single, bassist Anna Cory is rocking things out vocally, with the group’s sharp guitar work inserting both twee and noisier pop elements into your veins.  I like the fact that the band is working on hitting the main strokes of modern indiepop, but with a slightly heavier edge.  This is definitely a band you’ll want to keep an eye on, as songs this good are bound to make waves overseas.

Noise Rock From Young Mammals

389868_10150534123080912_1744921978_nSomehow Houston band Young Mammals has yet to be featured on this here website, and that’s just a shame when such a talented band is living in your backyard.  These guys craft their very own stye of noisy, distorted guitar heavy, rockin’ music.  What I’m sure is many reader’s first exposure to the band, “Build a House”, can be found below.  You’ll find that’s equal parts catchy and gritty all at the same time.

This track appears on a new 7″ coming out on November 5th via Odd Hours

New Music from Snowmine

SnowmineFrom the very first time I heard Snowmine, I was in love; they’ve played our SXSW party and made several of our year end lists.  After dipping their toes in the waters of record labels, the band have decided to release their new effort, Dialects, on their own.  The first big single is definitely what I expected from the band, using these incredible instrumental accents to build a wall of pop extravagance. The vocals, as always, are delightful, reminding me of exactly why I fell so hard for the band in the first place.  I’m sure if you spend some time with this new single that you’ll feel exactly the same way we do.
