Haunting Tune from Far-Out Fangtooth

farOkay, so perhaps haunting isn’t the precise word I’m looking for here; I think maybe erie might fit just as well, if not better.  Far-Out Fangtooth are typically known for their blistering psych leaning rock, but this tune has this ghostly vocal that is reminiscent of a band of demonic monks offering up a distant melody.  Of course, underlying that fact are the multiple layers and sonic changes in this tune, creating this captivating number that spans just under five minutes.  The group will be releasing Borrowed Time on October 29th via Slitbreeze.

Another New Jam from Swearin’

swearinJust a short bit ago we had this incredible tune from Swearin rocking on our stereos, and they’re back at it again a few short weeks later.  This song opens up really softly, then opens up with this shredding guitar line and a more frenetic pace.  Allison Crutchfield has the perfect voice for this sort of music, it’s got a bit of polish to it, yet it still has this strained sharpness that gives the tune, and the band, a solid edge.  Their album Surfing Strange will be out on November 4th via Wichita Recordings.

Super Rad Friday Tune from Younger Lovers

youngerloverWhether you’re heading to out to Austin’s ACL Festival or you just need a good jam to get your day started, you gotta listen to this rad tune from Younger Lovers.  It’s this jangling garage rock number with a killer step to it, which is influenced by the pounding rhythm section.  I think that things will be perfect for your Friday if you start here.  The band is going to be tossing out a new LP titled Sugar In My Pocket; it’s going to be released by Southpaw Records on December 10th.

Powerful Rocker from Crystal Antlers

crystalantlersIt’s going to be hard for me to tell you how excited I am about the upcoming album, Nothing is Real (October 15th), from Crystal Antlers, but I’ll give it the good old college try.  This band’s been one of our ATH favorites since we started this site, putting on incredible shows and banging out these noisy rock numbers.  That being said, things seem to be moving in a slightly pop direction, at least as far as the band can go.  This track has this hook beneath the brash noise they bring, which is something they’ve become better at as they’ve pushed forward.  It’s got the energy we expect from the band, and we can’t wait until they make it all the way back to Austin once the record is out.  Oh, and they’re also cool because they’re giving out this song as a download…an ancient tradition it seems.

Austin Show Spotlight: Jonly Bonly @ Hotel Vegas (10.4)

1292093_463301757118779_791286496_oI get it folks, ACL just isn’t your thing.  You’re probably trying to stay away from the hordes of people in the downtown area too.  So why not enjoy a righteous night of rock n’ roll by heading over to Hotel Vegas to catch one of the hottest new bands in town.  Okay, so Jonly Bonly might not be new boys, with members of Sweet Talk and OBN IIIs taking the helm, but the band itself is fairly new; I’ve been rocking out to the few songs they passed my way, and I’m expecting them to blow the socks off Austin in no time.  You like catchy proto-punk with a garage rock bent? Yeah, you better be there this Friday night.  They’ll be playing with Trustees and DJ Andrew McCalla to make your night both cheap and fulfilling; it all follows the Richard Buckner set! Oh, and here’s one of those sweet rocking tunes I was talking about.  Meet your favorite new band people!

Glitchy R&B From Wet

ACL is about to be all up on us, but how about some new mellow synths pop goodness with a side of pre-turn of the century R&B?

Wet brings us the track “Dreams”. It is the opening track on the EP due 10/15 on Neon Gold. Though this is their first album, the three piece has been doing the music thing for seven years. The highlight is the vocal from Kelly Zutrau. Breaks, beats and swells with guitars ringing to fill it out. Have a listen.

New Track from Head and the Heart

headAdmittedly, I’m not completely sold on The Head and the Heart, but they have two things going for them.  For one, they’re trusted by Sub Pop, which says a lot considering the label’s home to some of my favorites.  Second, this song is just really solid and hard to ignore.  My issue with the band was that I felt their first release was a little uneven, but both the tracks I’ve listened to from their forthcoming Let’s Be Still have been super impressive, leading me to believe that this could be the record that cements the group as a huge act across the globe.  If you’re into folk-influenced pop music then I think this one’s for you.

Driving Pop from Azure Blue

CD63You’ve gotta love the Swedes! They’re even better when, like Azure Blue, they make their way into the American music landscape via their association with our favorite labels.  As previously mentioned here, the band is going to release Beyond the Dreams There’s Infinite Doubt; it’ll be released by one of my top labels for indiepop, Matinee Recordings, next week.  There’s a heavy synth line on this tune, which surely will hit the heart of fans across the globe, but I like the addition of Julia Vero with backing vocals.  Sometimes you can’t deny a great track its day in the sun.

Dreamy Girl Pop from September Girls

septemberFor those of you looking for someone to temporarily, or permanently, replace your Vivian Girls/Dum Dum Girls fix, there’s no one out there doing a better job than September Girls.  This new tune opens up with this pounding drum, as a washed out vocal enters the fold.  Guitars are lightly dancing around in the background, swinging this dreamy bit of garage-pop our way.  The band’s released a handful of singles with some of our favorite labels, like Matinee, but they’ll be releasing their full length debut on Fortuna Pop in just a short bit of time. We’ll keep you posted, but enjoy this sweet jam.

Soulful Tune from The Liminanas

TIM060.Liminanas.CostaBlanca.LPjktUsually I’m not one to get into music sung in another language (it’s hard to relate ok?), but on this new track from French outfit the Liminanas, the group offer just a hint of English to grab my attention.  Oh, and I should probably mention that the track’s pretty special on it’s own.  While it has this really sinister moving moment that dictates the majority of the track, it also offers up a psych rock solo in the middle to mix things up.  I appreciate the group offering up more than just your traditional fare of the left-field genre, so in the end it’s easy for me to back what they’re doing.  The band will offer up Costa Blanca on November 19th via Trouble in Mind Records; it’ll be a reward for those who choose to step out of line.
