royalforest_press_2012_me

Date 7/12/13
Location Holy Mountain
Doors 9pm
Tickets $5

It’s a bit of a slow weekend in Austin for national touring acts so what better time to get out there and support your local musicians?  Easily your best opportunity for some great local music comes on Friday night at Holy Mountain with a vinyl release show celebrating the touchdown of Royal Forest’s new album Spillway. Making the show that much better is the undercard with local favorites Frank Smith, Tiger Waves, and Your Friendly Ghost all joining in on the fun.  Not sure I could put together a better local bill if you asked me to.  Get out there, tip your bartenders, and buy some merch jerks.

Playful Number from Mean Lady

meanlady-600-1372450949I figure I always go on and on about rock n’ roll, so I figured I’d throw the world for a spin with a new single from Mean Lady.  It definitely takes a minute or so for the song to open up, with a light bit of tinkering to kick things off, but once it hits the groove, you’re going to get hooked on the infectious vocal performance from Katie Dill.  This track features some bouncing piano, soaring vocals and even some handclap loops, all making this the perfect summertime hit for your next party.  You can find this jam on the group’s Love Now LP, which is being put out by Fat Possum.  Enjoy the hooks.

Exciting New Music from Of Montreal

ofmontrealOkay, so Of Montreal puts out tunes almost every year, so why is this so exciting? Well, for me, this single seems to exemplify the sound from the group that I first fell in love with when I jammed to Satanic Panic in the Attic; it’s not all bleeps and bloops, choosing to focus on more traditional guitar based melodies.  Still, it’s every bit a Kevin Barnes sound, which never ceases to impress me; I really like the vocal tone switch around the 2:15 minute mark.  The new record is titled lousy with sylvianbriar, and it’ll see a release from Polyvinyl Records on October 8th.  Hope it all sounds this great.

New Psych Pop From Incan Abraham

IA credit Isaac ZollerThis new jam “Tuolumne” by L.A. based pysch-pop group Incan Abraham has been on repeat since it fell into my inbox yesterday.  I’m digging the almost Yeasayer like sound mixed in with bright and sunny vocals similar to those of fellow Californians Fool’s Gold.  You’re sure to enjoy it just as much as me.

This track comes your way as a digital single packaged as a photo zine courtesy of White Iris.  You can pre-order that now or wait till it’s fully available next month.

Stream A Single Dropped By Widowspeak

Widowspeak just released a preview track of their pending EP. The song is called “True Believer” and if you like the Widowspeak, you will be pleased. Very pleased.

It has the drawn out tempo, as though it was recorded at pace and slowed down to keep your busy brain in check. Vocals and guitar interplay in lovely layers.

The EP will be called Swamps and is due late October via Captured Tracks.

More New Music From Shark Week

sharkweek_promo_webShark Week is a band that I have enjoyed since last fall, but really fell head over heels for when they stopped in for SXSW this year. Back in May I shared a new song called “Go West” appearing on the band’s new 7″ single dropping at the end of the month on Analog Edition. Prior to that date, the band have been kind enough to offer up the B-side to that single “Baby Maybe”. Let us know your thoughts.

Austin Spotlight: Classy Nude Release Split w/ Quitters + 7″ Release Show

classyOne of the acts I’ve been keeping a close eye on, Classy Nude, is releasing a split with another such act, Quitters.  Both Austin acts specialize in crafting pop tunes centered around well-written guitar chords, leaving listeners with hooks to tap their toes to today. CN has been kind enough to share their part of the split 7″ with us, and we’re happy to share that track with you as well.  If you like what you hear, you can order the 7″ HERE, or you can head out to Hotel Vegas on Thursday night to pick one up in person from both bands.  That bill also includes other heavy local hitters like Act Rights, Poppy Red and RF Shannon. Dig the tune below!

Hunx & His Punx Rocking Out Again

Hunx & PunxLast year’s Hairdresser Blues brought us the softer side of Hunx, but now that he’s working with his Punx again things are amped right back up.  This new tune from his upcoming Street Punk LP is a quick little blast with jagged guitar word and breakneck speed…it’s over in just over 1.5 minutes.  It seems there’s definitely two sides to Mr. Hunx, and I’m always down to listen to both.  The newest release will be coming your way on July 23rd via Hardly Art Records.

New Tunes from Islands

islands17We’ve long been fans of Islands, not to mention the various other projects by Nick Thorburn (especially Human Highway), so we’re always happy when he pops up with a new song. His group are back, after a little over a year, with a brand new album titled Ski Mask; it hits stores in September.  The first single we get to here builds really slowly, but jumps off into the collage-o-pop masterpiece that has made Nick so endearing over all these years.  Plain and simple, the guy knows how to write catchy tunes.  Listen and see.

More New Americana From Moondoggies

moondoggiesATH is fond of Hardly Art band Moondoggies and you know this.  Already this year we’ve heard new track “Red Eye”, and now the band are offering up another great song called “Midnight Owl”.  Again you can hear the Americana influences from the band with some great swirling guitars and a mellow folky style.

New album Adios I’m a Ghost will drop Ausgust 13th via Hardly Art.
