Austin Spotlight: The River Has Many Voices

IMG_6258Our recent post calling out Austin’s live music scene has resulted in a major influx of emails coming our way from tons of local musicians looking for some help with exposure on our site.  To be blatantly honest, most of what we are sent isn’t worth your time, but then we find some gems like Matthew Payne and his project known as The River Has Many Voices.  Payne is an Austin native and has been writing music inspired by the Texas Hill Country for the last several years with an impressive list of recordings under his belt.  Upon first listen to the music, I hear sounds similar to Masson Jennings, Elvis Perkins, or really any other of the great up and coming singer songwriters in the game.  Below you can find a taste of this material with latest single “If You Gotta Go (Go With Me)” which I’ve found myself drawn to since the very first time I hit play.  I’m betting most of you will feel the same way.

While you’re at it, check out new album Division over on bandcamp and make a purchase if you see fit.  Stay tuned for more from Matt and co.

Exciting Folk from Joseph Childress

Joseph_alternateBW.130436The music on Joseph Childress‘ upcoming release was actually recorded in 2005, but he’s been quietly polishing it up while working on his live performances.  Good news for all of us is that the work is finally finished, and it will see release from Empty Cellar Records on August 20th under the name The Rebirths.  The guitar picking first stuck out to me, but when Joseph’s voice rises to a slight strain, it all seems pretty special to me.  It’s a distinctive voice, but one that I think will interest many listeners: see for yourself.

New Electro Pop From Brothertiger

BrothertigerElectro Pop music seems to be exploding on this site right now so I’ll continue the trend with this new jam from ATH favorite Brothertiger.  The song is called “In Mind” and will appear on new album Future Splendors dropping September 24th on Mush Records.  We’ll be looking forward to that one.

Lots of shows are going down this weekend in Austin, but my most highly anticipated show has got to be Matt Pond PA stopping into town at Holy Mountain.  Having been a fan of the band for such a long time, I’ve personally been looking forward to another chance to catch the band in the live setting for a long time.  To make things even better this lineup is loaded with North Carolinians Matrimony and local favorites Tiger Waves.  Come join the ATH crew for a solid evening of tunes.

Happy Shivery Shakes Day

Shivery ShakesWell, our city had made us proud once this week, and it’s happening once again as Mayor Lee Leffingwell is naming today Shivery Shakes Day, in honor of our friend William and his band.  This is a great thing, as William has been working in the Austin scene for several years; first as The Bubbles and more recently with Shivery Shakes.  Plus, the band has just opened up a kickstarter to help fund the recording of their new album.  You can help the group out by donating a dollar or more right HERE.  Below you can jam to one of my favorite Shakes tunes.  Happy SS Day to you all.

Dark Pop From My Gold Mask

goldenmaskMy Gold Mask released their last album Leave Me Midnight just this past February but are already hard at on more new music for their fans.  A planned series of singles are in the works for the band currently and this new track “Dangerous” is the first taste of that new material.  It’s an incredibly sexy dark pop number.  I can’t think of any other way to describe so enjoy and tell us what you think.

Slow Jam from Diarrhea Planet

diarrheaUp until now, the music from Diarrhea Planet has been heavy-hitting, which I definitely enjoy, but it’s nice to see them slow things down a bit here on their latest single.  Don’t fret, they allow for some sonic eruptions, but only after slowly building their way up towards those moments.  I think it adds a different dynamic to their songwriting, and in doing so, they’ve made their upcoming album a more intriguing affair.  That record, I’m Rich Beyond Your Wildest Dreams, arrives on August 20th, just a few weeks after you can catch them here in Austin at the Parish.

No Bummer Summer Playlist 2013

We’re officially in summer mode here at ATH, and though we realize not everyone has the summer months off like we teachers (sorry, photo guy), we also think everyone could use some summer music for your weekend getaways.  For that reason, we’ve thrown together a “No Bummer Summer” playlist to help you make it through these long, hot summer days.  Enjoy it as you sit by the pool, do some day drinking, or take the boat out on Travis.

Follow the jump and press play to get random with ATH.

Another Track From Béisbol

I just saw Beisbol last friday after the Baths show. They were good. They mentioned another track that would be available for download. They played the track and I liked it. The Portland group based around the Brothers Burian are nice people.

Anyway, more catchy jam action, this time a little lower in the tempo department. You can stream the whole album, Lo-Fi Cocaine, over on their Soundcloud. Go see them if you get a chance. Tell ’em the photo guy in Austin that made them stand in front of walls sent you.

Fresh New Music from The Proper Ornaments

properornamentsA few years ago, I was haunted by the music of the Proper Ornaments, which is odd, considering they only had a handful of tunes available.  But, our friend Toby at Finest Kiss pointed out that the band had a new single, and an upcoming LP on the way.  What I like about the band’s direction is their inclination to slow things down a bit, in comparison to early works; the melodies are softer and the guitar seems to carefully traipse about in the foreground.  It all leaves you with an airy listen, yet comes across just as powerful as the early workings of the group, if not more so.  Enjoy this single: available on Lo Recordings.
