Cover Tune from Pickwick (ft. Sharon Van Etten)

I’m a fan of collaboration, especially when it’s executed properly.  It doesn’t take much to get me excited about Sharon Van Etten either, so when I found that Seattle’s Pickwick was joining up with the lady love, I had to post the tune for you.  “Lady Luck” is a Richard Swift cover, which uses the strength of Van Etten to push the song into a soulful flow of soft rock.  This is just one of three covers the band recently released on a Covers EP, which also has tunes from Damien Jurado and The Primitives.  They’ll also be releasing their own full length in March, which is highly anticipated at the ATH offices.

Another Gentle Song from Leapling

We’ve been hot on the heels of Leapling since they were first picked up by the good folks over at Father Daughter Records, and this new single continues their great first impression.  There’s a quieted build-up with an underlying pulse, just before the whispering vocals come in to play.  There’s some electronic tinkering that goes along intermittently, providing a feeling not far off from Pinback or a Fugiya & Miyagi, but the special moment arrives near the end when the song bursts into this blissed out harmony.  You can grab this track and a few others from the band’s Losing Face EP, which is available now!

New Synth Laden Pop From Gracie

I’m sort of in an electronic mood today as I try to groove my way into the weekend with some head nodding synth-pop music.  My mood is continuing in this vein with this new pop tune “Habits” from Philly based indie band Gracie.  The band has a wealth of other material over on their bandcamp page so I’m surprised that we haven’t been turned on to them until just now.  My bad.  A new EP called Bleeder will be coming your way March 12th via Small Plates Records.

Youth Lagoon Dropla’s A Smooth Jam

Catch up post for a new track called “Dropla” from Youth Lagoon, a track fit for a Friday leading you into a smooth jam.

Trevor and the boys landed a sweet spot opening for The National at The Barclay’s Center in June. Whoa. Brooklyn friends, be advised. Nathan was a little let down by their live sets during SxSW last year, but I can see that the potential for a compelling live set was there. They better bring it in the house that Jay-Z (and a Russian billionaire) built.

The new album called Wondrous Bughouse lands 3/5 on Chubby Creepy Nocturnal Marsupial.

New Music from The Little Ones

We’re only a few weeks into 2013 and the music is already hitting us hard; there’s only so much one small site can cover!  But, with that in mind, we’re only a month away from the new release from The Little Ones.  The Dawn Sang Along will be in stores on February 12th via Branches Recording Collective, and the group is aiming directly at the heart of pop-lovers.  On this new single you’ll hear bright harmonies in the vocals, tinkering musical instruments, and a general sense of pleasure for the listener.  This is pop music for everyone to enjoy; this is The Little Ones.

More New Music from Lost Animal

The more I involve myself with Lost Animal, the project of Jarrod Quarrell, the more I begin to think that it’s a more elegant approach to the stylings of Kurt Vile or War on Drugs.  Rather than use the rock n’ roll method of guitar and atmospherics, Quarrell chooses to rely upon the synthesizer or keyboard for his songwriting.  It helps to differentiate his sound a bit from his aformentioned peers, even though the vocals still maintain a similar sonic passion.  If you like what you hear from this compelling songwriter, then be sure to check out the release of Ex Tropical, which comes out January 29th via Hardly Art Records.

New Rock n Roll From Kinski

Sometimes I don’t get enough credit around here for liking to rock just as much as everyone else.  Sure I tend to have tastes that jump all over the place, but I also can appreciate a great rock n roll number when I hear one.  This new song “Conflict Free Diamonds” from underrated veteran rock outfit Kinski is definitely worthy of receiving that great rock song tag.  Me gusta mucho.

After a long 6 year delay, the band have a new album entitled Cosy Moments due out April 2nd via Kill Rock Stars.

Beautiful New Track from Tiger Waves

Long have we supported Tiger Waves, and with their most recent single, that’s definitely not going to change.  This latest track is from a collection of 8 new songs the band is currently finishing up.  We’re going to help the band by releasing those sets of songs on our ATH Records label come may, but for now, they want you to sit back and enjoy this simple beauty.  There’s this great bit of warmth that flows through the speakers when you press play, and a slight bit of stomping as the pace picks up slightly.  Properly place backing vocals only add to the harmonious folk approach the group has taken on as of late.  I couldn’t be more proud of these guys.  Also, if you’re in the Midwest and North East…keep an eye out, the band is coming your way in the next few weeks.

Darkly Tinted Tune from Wax Idols

It says a lot, to me at least, that among the forty emails I waded through yesterday, this Wax Idols tune was one of the standouts. I’ve adored the group for some time, and I’ve really been looking forward to this their new record, Discipline & Desire.  For me, this jam completely encapsulates both sides of the band, you know–where they’ve been and where they’re going. There’s a subdued haunting introductory pop that comes back and forth with Hether calmly singing atop, but then it blasts off.  It goes into a dark post punk bit of a stomp, living a bit in the group’s sonic past.  When it shoots off into the bright guitar excursion towards the end, it’s clear that they’ve got a hit. You can get the record on March 26th from Slumberland Records.

New Electro Grooves From Gliss

It’s been awhile since I’ve found something that makes me want to do my slow hipster kid dance like this new jam “Blur” from Danish act Gliss.  You won’t find yourself in an all out break dance to the song as it’s more of a slow burning groovy type of dance number.  I could definitely see it being added to an ATH dance playlist immediately.

Fans on the tuneage won’t have to wait long for the release of the band’s new album Langsom Dans out next week on Modern Outsider.
