Tropical Popsicle Announce Album Details

I’ve been closely keeping tabs on Tropical Popsicle since I came across the group in August of last year.  Luckily, I have a feeling I won’t be the only one following the band now that they’ve announced their debut LP, Dawn of Delight, which is going to see release in mid-March via Volar Records.  In the track below, you get the impression that the combination of psychedelia with atmospheric sun-pop will largely be the sonic approach of Tim Hines and company.  When the songwriter uses this sort of patience, allowing the gentle unfolding of melody, I tend to swoon.  What do you say?

Beautiful Indie Pop from Golden Grrrls

Man, these Glaswegians are really something special.  I’ve written about Golden Grrrls and their powerful hooks once before, but this newest single is just ridiculously tasty.  They’ve got a self-titled album coming out on February 26th on the always reliable Slumberland Records, and if it’s filled with more songs like this, you won’t be able to put it down.  Personally, the interplay between male and female vocalists is quite enchanting, but the musicality of it all has me really excited.  It’s not your typical all out twanging guitars and distortion, but a steady-paced blend of on-point drumming and a slightly folk-influenced guitar work.  Absolutely one of my favorite tracks of the year already.

More New Rock From Virals

We ATH kids have jumped on board the band wagon for UK group Virals this year.  We’ve already shared two songs with you  going by the rocking names of “Summer Girls” and “Gloria”.  Well now the band has yet another new song to share with all of you entitled “Strange Fruit” and it’s got just as much rock to offer as those other jams.  This one goes in more of a fuzzy Fresh & Onlys type of direction and I know most everyone around these parts will be into that.

This track appears on a new EP from Virals entitled Strange Fruit which drops next week via Zoo Music.

New Music from Ablebody (ex POBAH/Depreciation Guild)

I love coming home to really great tracks, such as today when I came home to an email from Christoph Hochheim, who has worked with POBAH and the Depreciation Guild in the past.  He’s out on his known using the Ablebody moniker, creating floating indie pop tunes that seem perfect for a relaxed evening at home.  There’s floating bits of electronics coming in and out, coordinating a sublime melody with the vocals.  Christoph is going to be releasing his All My Everybody EP on January 29th, and fans of this song are going to be more than pleased with what’s coming your way.

The Besnard Lakes Are In The Sticks

Mentioned yesterday that I was geeked to see The Besnard Lakes. They also happened to release a teaser track from the new album Until In Excess, Imperceptible UFO due in April on Jagjaguwar.

“People of the Sticks” is a gorgeous and flowing piece that pendulums away from the stadium and closer to gaze, but we’ll wait to see what’s what for the overall feel of the album when it is released. They certainly were a favorite of mine from SxSW a few years back so I will be stalking them from the best day parties all the way to their big showcase.

Austin Free Week: Weekend Highlights

Hook-Laden Pop from Colleen Green

What? You want danceable rock n’ roll? Well, then Colleen Green is going to give it to you.  On her first single for Hardly Art she’s offering up gritty guitar tracks backed by pulsating synth beats.  Her voice is hazily haunting in the background, leaving listeners with an endearing pop song that you’ll likely want to include on your next digi-mix. She’ll be dropping Sock It To Me on March 19th via the aforementioned label, who’ve yet to put out a bad record in their tenure.  Fans of La Sera and Best Coast will surely find themselves attracted to this tune, as well as just about everyone else. You can’t argue with a hit.

Veteran Punk from Steve Adamyk Band

You didn’t think I was going soft on you did you? I’m the resident punk rocker here, and I’ve written about Steve Adamyk Band before on these very pages.  On this new track from the group’s upcoming LP, they pummel quickly through the track, using sharp guitar chops with hints of feedback swirling.  Before you can blink, the track’s got you hooked, and then it’s over.  Sure, I could use an extra 45 seconds, but beggars can’t be choosers, right? If you dig what you hear, the band will be releasing Third on February 5th via the most excellent Dirtnap Records.

Solemn Track from Carmen Villain

I’d find it really easy to dismiss the work of Carmen Villain as some sort of kitsch, seeing as she spent a part of her early adulthood as model Carmen Hillestad.  But, after listening to the first single from her upcoming album, I find her enchanting for a wholly different reason.  There’s a slight rasp to her vocals, and the accompanying music quietly supports her quieted approach.  The album is titled Sleeper, and it’s being released by Smalltown Supersound on March 12th.  After multiple listens to the single, I definitely see the title of the release as quite fitting.

New Twee Garage Pop From Beat Marks

I’m not sure if anyone has ever used the term twee garage pop before so I plan on coining it as my own if it has yet to be claimed.  That’s the term I’m using to describe this relatively new Paris based outfit Beat Marks.  Their sound combines the twee elements of POBPAH with some of the indie garage bands like Yo la Tengo or even a touch of Sonic Youth.  Those comparisons may seem a bit bold, but I find the band might just be worthy.
