Pleased to Meet You: Succulents
There were several years when we were covering Songs for Walter pretty nonstop, but the project went quiet. But, songwriter Laurie Hulme has returned this past week with a new project titled Succulents. He’s joined by Lucy Ridges and they’re hitting you with this immediacy that pulls from their mutual love of acts like the Pastels and Belle and Sebastian. That being said, there’s something here that reminds me a bit of good old fashioned alt rock from the 90s; I keep hearing bits of the Rentals in the way they intertwine their vocal hooks. They then turn to close out the track with this fuzzy psychedelic breakdown that leads to the final push of blasting hooks! Looking forward to hearing what’s next from the group.

When it rains it pours, and if we’re looking back in time, last week it was pouring with great jams and great records. Whether I was bopping to new Winspear signing Swapmeet, or cranking up that new She’s Green single, there just wasn’t enough time to cover it all. I mean, there was new Voxtrot, new Heavenly…and even Ceremony dropped a live LP, and that’s just the good records that hit. We had new music from Accessory and Season 2, plus new jams from King Tuff and Deary. If you click play below, you’re in for a good hour or more of sweet music, so what are you waiting for?
The new schedule forced a lot of changes in the SXSW lineup, and we expected some changes to our yearly Side One Track One vs AustinTownHall annual show at Hotel Vegas. It looked like we might not be able to pull it off, but the great folks at the venue swooped in to save the show, albeit in a bit of a limited fashion. Love working with John Laird, who also runs the 101X Homegrown Live show, and he helps keep this ship organized and running tight!
