Sonora Records Summer Sampler

Not too long ago, some of our amigos in Austin concluded that they were fed up with the current state of the music industry and decided to start a record  label to call their own.  From their collective minds came promising new record label Sonora Records with the plan to “help make music, one record at a time”.  To celebrate their beginnings, the guys at Sonora have put together an 18 song sampler featuring some of their talent along with a few tunes from Austin’s finest up and coming artists.  ATH favorites, The Bubbles, Quiet Company, and Guns of Navarone make an appearance with new faces like The Couch, On After Dark, and The Handshake sharing new music.

Also making an appearance on the sampler are old friends Whitman, who are premiering new song “NW Thurman” from their upcoming 2011 LP Weekends.  If this new summertime jam from the Austin boys doesn’t get you moving, then you must not have a pulse.  Whitman have also made new anthem like tune “Dead Dog Days” available for free download over on their bandcamp page for a limited time.  You can also say hi to Sonora Records on twitter or download their new sampler over on bandcamp.

New Tunes from the UFO Club

What do you get when you combine bits of The Black Angels with pieces of The Night Beats? The UFO Club! Reverberation Appreciation Society has been spreading the news that they’ll be offering up a limited edition vinyl collection for a split 10″ that will feature tracks from the UFO Club, as well as a few from the Night Beats. This released song is hauntingly dark, and I dare say that it probably delves more into the psychedelia than Christian Bland’s regular gig.  It’s one of those tracks that just sort of takes you through this twisted tunnel of heavy vocals and bits of guitar noise.  Definitely give this a try, and if you like it, you can stream the whole album HERE.

More New Tunes from Pursesnatchers

I’m going to say right now, but one of my favorite records so far this summer has been the advance I got of Pursesnatchers, the group comprised of members of Dirty on Purpose and Au Revoir Simone. The combination of gentle melody and explosive indie rock moments.  The rising tides in the songs, much like those in the album, take you on a journey where you’re sure to get your money’s worth.  Their new record, A Pattern Language, will be coming out on July 19th via Uninhabitable Mansions, and I guarantee that you’ll enjoy every last instant of music living in the powerful songs the group have written. Here’s another great track.

More New Tunes from Richard Buckner

As we near the release of Richard Buckner‘s first album in five years, Our Blood, more new music is slowly starting to come to light.  Buckner did a great interview with IFC this week, and they offered up another great track before the album comes out on August 2nd from Merge Records.   I love how you can feel the emotion in his voice, and the music is so quietly unassuming that you really can’t help but let yourself be drawn into it.  At this point in time, I don’t really see a way that I can’t fall in love with this record. There’s just no way; how about you?

New Track from King Louie’s Missing Monuments

I can’t tell you how much I’ve always enjoyed the projects of King Louie Bankston.  He played with The Exploding Hearts, one of my all time favorite groups, and he also had a one off project called The Bad Times with Jay Reatard, not to mention a slew of other projects that came up in between. He’s recently signed on with Douchemaster Records, and he’ll be putting out an album with Missing Monuments, titled Painted White.  Everything in this song sums up exactly what I love: it’s a little bit of punk, a whole lot of power, and hints of pop.  That’s basically a recipe for a killer song, and a killer album. You’ll find some joy here.

New Music From First Rate People

In the midst of a rather boring week of summer, I went out looking for a happy little pop number and was given just that by Ontario’s First Rate People.  This new song “Someone Else Can Make a Work of Art” is intended as one and done single to build hype for an upcoming full length.  It you’re enjoying the sounds made by the band, check out previously released dance hall ready single “Girls’ Night” over on Don’t Die Wondering.

New Music From The Nighty Nite

Yesterday we got word of this new project called The Nighty Nite formed by John Congleton and Jason Garner of the Paper Chase along with members of Shearwater, Wires Under Tension, and The Hospital Ships.  Coming from a short recording session, the new group produced four songs for an EP entitled Dimples due out June 21st via Graveface Records.  You’ll obviously hear the heavy influence of The Paper Chase in these tunes with that familiar indie horror music style that we’ve grown to love.  Glad to hear these guys are continuing to create enjoyable tunes.

New Track from Pepper Rabbit

Almost less than a year after their last release, it seems that Pepper Rabbit are returning again with a brand new record, Red Velvet Snow Ball.  Said album will be released on August 9th via Kanine Records, and if it sounds at all like this debut track, it’s going to be pretty special.  I love the way the song opens with this sort of bouncy beat, contrasted by some technological warfare on the sound itself.  But, once they get going, it’s hard not to see this as anything as blissful pop music, of the best sort.  For a duo, this band sure knows how to flesh out their own sound, which you’ll definitely be aware of when you listen to this on repeat for the next several hours.

New Music From Peter Wolf Crier

Here’s a new little jam called “Right Away” from one of my favorite new artists from last year Peter Wolf Crier.  Upon first listen, the song immediately drew me in with its creative and unique take on drums and quirky rhythms.  I’m sure that we can expect more great tunes when the band’s new album Garden of Arms hits stores on September 8th on Jagjaguwar Records.

New Track from Case Studies

Long did I champion the work of the Dutchess and the Duke, but as they’ve gone away, at least for the time being, I’ve been anxiously awaiting the release of Case Studies, the project of former D&D frontman, Jesse, which I caught wind of via our friend Toby over at Finest Kiss. Case Studies will be releasing The World is Just a Shape to Fill the Night via Sacred Bones on August 16th.  Listening to this, you’ll notice that Jesse seems to have a darker tone in his voice, and the female vocal accompaniment seems less like a counterbalance and more like an added instrument to give the song some depth.  His voice always carries the focus for me, and this track is no different. Hope this does well.
