New Tunes from Islands

islandsWe’ve been closely following news that Islands will be releasing Vapours this September on Anti Records. Anything Nic Thorburn lays his hands upon turns up to be genius in our books, be it this band or Human Highway or the much missed Unicorns. This new track is a different approach to songwriting for him, with the empty space left open for his voice to soar.

New Tunes from The Flaming Lips

lipsAs much as I was disappointed by At War with the Mystics, I still have a soft-spot, mostly due to my friends, for The Flaming Lips. Every once in awhile they come up with something brilliant, such as The Soft Bulletin; it seems now that they have a title for their upcoming album in the fall, Embryonic, it’s time for tracks to make their way to the web. Thank to our good friend over at Covert Curiosity for giving us the heads up on the new tracks. Enjoy the promising “Silver Trembling Hands.”

New Tunes from Free Energy

freeenergyFrom the ashes of Hockey Night comes the straight-nostalgic rockers Free Energy. Word on the street is that the man behind the production of the groups self-titled 7″ is none other than James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem. You’ll find all sorts of reference points on this album from the days of old, but probably not the ones you would expect.  Try this one on for size.

First Single From Monsters Of Folk

monstersoffolkJust saw over on the Pitchfork that the huge Monsters of Folk collaboration now has a release date and a first single.  If you weren’t already aware, the star studded project involves M. Ward, Jim James from My Morning Jacket, Conor Oberst from Bright Eyes, and producer Mike Mogis.  The band plans to release their self-titled debut September 15th via Shangri-La Records.  For now, here’s the first material from the project “Say Please”.  Dig.

New Tunes from The Crayon Fields

thecrayonfields01 The Crayon Fields have been one of my favorite bands for the last several years; they blend jangly South Pacific pop with pure melody.  Since they have a new album coming out this September, we’ve got a new song from the band to offer to you this Friday.  It shows signs of great things to come in the very near future.

Black And White Years @ Stubbs (7/18)

bwhiteyrsThe Black and White Years have slowly started to make a name for themselves as one of the biggest draws in our town.  Chances to see them in smaller venues in Austin may be hard to come by soon so head to the indoor stage at Stubbs Saturday night for a set by the rock n roll outfit.  We’re more excited for the show because our good friends Whitman will be providing the opening support for the evening and start around 10pm.  Tickets can be had now for $8 or $10 at the door.  Here’s that catchy single by B&WY, “Power to Change”.

Austin A2W: TV Torso

tv_torso_photographer_tim_murrayTV Torso may not be a household name at this point, but I’m sure some of you are familiar with the Austin band Sound Team that disbanded forever in 2007.  We mention them because two founding members of TV Torso, Matt Oiver (guitar/vocals) and Jordan Johns (drums) were both members of that now defunct Austin band.  After adding bassist Austin Jones, the band has started fresh and are planning to take the Austin world by storm.  TV Torso call their sound minimal rock music and try to keep their sound as simplistic as possible.  Whatever you want to call it, we dig it.  The band also recently finished recording two 7″ singles which will hit stores August 18th and will come with the vinyl, free downloads, a bonus download and a blank CD-R.  You can catch these guys live on Thursday at Mohawk for free around midnight or on August 20th again at Mohawk along with fellow A2W band The Authors.  Check out the TV Torso band camp site for some more free tuneage or enjoy this one “Days of Being Wild”.
