ACL Battles: Band of Horses Vs. Flaming Lips

With only about a week and a half remaining until the huge ACL festival starts on the 8th of this month, it’s time that you really start thinking about that plan of action for who you want to see over the weekend.  Sometimes your choice will be easy with only one decent band playing at a certain time, but then you’ll have a choice like this one that will make you want to pull your hair out.  So on the one hand you have The Flaming Lips who formed over 25 years ago and have been doing their psych rock thing for longer than most of us can remember.  But then we have a more recent favorite in Band of Horses who can still hold their own despite their relatively short career together.  Both bands are playing on Sunday late in the day at 6pm on opposite sides of the festival, so you have little hope of catching a bit of both sets.  My initial feeling was to go with Band of Horses based on my just having seen Flaming Lips at Free Press Summer Fest earlier this summer.  Plus, I feel like The Lips are still using the same damn live gimmicks that they’ve been hitting us with for the last 5-6 years… I mean cool, but I’ve seen it more than once.  Then again, Flaming Lips play right before The National on back to back stages so it would be nice to just post up and avoid fighting the crowds.  I also fear that the Band of Horses crowd could be old hippie city since The Eagles play on the same stage shortly after BOH. My indifference towards the recent material from both of these bands may cause me to just go with a majority vote amongst my friends.  Care to share your thoughts?

New Music from Frank Smith

Apparently we’re supposed to inform you that Frank Smith is actually a real band, not just the name of the singer, who is actually Aaron Sinclair.  What’s more important is that you realized that there’s a powerful sound behind the Americana-ish group, with a little bit more melodrama than your usual.  It sort of has the sound of a more fleshed out Clem Snide, but with expressive lyrics.  The group has worked hard on their new album, Nineteen, which you can get your hands on October 16th when the band play their CD release at Mohawk. Enjoy, but remember, its a band, not a man.

New Music from Shimmering Stars

Would you look at these lads? Don’t they look fetch? Well, since Monday was a bit of a slow one in the music biz, I was happy in the afternoon when I ran across this new track from Canadian group Shimmering Stars.  The band made waves back in the summer with their song “Im Gonna Try,” and now they’ve got another blissful pop jam to toss your way (via P4K).  Seems like something we’d all be into right? Indeed, so happy Tuesday.

New Music from The Parting Gifts

When Coco Hames and Gret Cartwright took a break from their respective bands, The Ettes and Reigning Sound, they had no intention of writing a whole album.  Their work together began with a 7″ in mind, but led to an entire album’s worth of material under the name The Parting Gifts. Their album will be called Strychnine Dandelion, and it hits stores on November 9th via In the Red Records. This first single has a bluesy grit to it, and a pounding rhythm that kicks you in the teeth from the get go.  It’s that good old classic rock sound with a hint of dirt thrown in to keep it real.

It will be in stores on November 16th, so you better get yourselves ready.  Just one listen to this single, and we know you’ll be excited to get behind another great local Austin band.

New Music From British Sea Power

Brighton based indie rockers British Sea Power have a new 7 song EP coming your way on October 5th digitally and October 12th on vinyl.  Prior to that date, we’ve got this new song from the EP called “Zeus” streaming below.  All of these tracks serve as a sort of preview to an upcoming full length album from the band coming some time next year.  Dig.

Free Tunes from White Denim

It seems like our local boys White Denim are up to more than we thought. While working on their untitled third LP, the guys decide to do sort of an off shoot and record a bunch of stuff, songs they say aren’t in the same vein of the stuff they’ve been working on.  Good news for you is that they’re offering up the entire recording session absolutely FREE.  Well, not entirely, as the band is asking for donations, and you should definitely spend a little money, as they’re worthy of support, ours and yours.  You can only get the new work HERE. Oh, and the work is called Last Day of Summer. Here is a sample.

New Music from Blank Dogs

I knew this was coming.  I had heard quiet whispers in the underground world if music nerds, and now P4K has helped us out, giving a little press to the newest of releases from Blank Dogs.  His last record was one of my favorites, and it blended the line between post-punk and electronic–usuaully with a twinge of gloom.  His next album, Land and Fixed, comes out on October 12th via Captured Tracks, which he runs.  If you go off this very first single, it definitely seems a little bit brighter, though his voice always has that appeal with the darkside.  Whatever, I’m digging it.

New Music from The Octopus Project

One of our favorite local acts, The Octopus Project are gearing up to release a new collection of songs, titled Hexadecagon.  The project began, as the band is like to do, with a bit of an artistic inspiration, writing the songs to video clips, and recording in the manner of the Flaming Lips on Zaireeka.  This collection hits the streets on October 26th, and just you wait for the band to rock it out, just like they do near the end of this track.

New Music from The Lucksmiths

It’s always a sad day when a great band calls it quits, but we knew this was coming for some time now.  The Lucksmiths have opted to call an end to their blissful tunes, but they’re not going to leave us empty handed before they run off.  The band is going to offer up one final 7″ by way of our good friends over at Matinee.  It’s the final two tracks from one of Australia’s great exports, so be sure to order this and savor the memories.
