New Music from Generationals

I was all about Generationals when their catchy album Con Law hit the streets, and now it seems like there is even more reason to be excited. They’ve got a new EP coming out soon on Park the Van, and it was recorded by our very own Austinite Bill Baird!  This new track, “Trust,” shows the band bringing a grittier bit to their pop du jour.  Pounding drums, clever vocal delivery, and those angular guitar lines cutting through one another just make this the perfect end of fall to winter jam.  The Trust EP will be in stores on November 16th!

New Music From Is/Is

So how many times have we posted about bands from Minnesota?  Not many times that I can remember anyway…  Hailing from the big sky country and catching my ear as of late is this 3 piece all girl band Is/Is.  Their sound ranges from Warpaint to the fuzzy sound of Sonic Youth and then over to a straight up garage rock band with no B.S.  Have yourself a listen to track “So Long”, let us know what you think, and say hi to the ladies on myspace.

New Music from Girls

We’re always glad to hear something new coming from Girls.  They recently won new fans over at Austin City Limits, and now they’re releasing a new EP in order to give us even more.  The new EP is titled Broken Dreams Club, and it comes out on November 22ns via True Panther.  This single sees the band focusing less on their surf-ish sound, allowing Chris Owens to grab your heart with his vocals, which always have a nice little inflection for you to adore.  If this is their new direction, we’re getting pretty excited.  Give the new track a try.

New Music from Yellow Ostrich

Yellow Ostrich is primarily the work of Alex Schaaf, but he’s just trying to get by with a little help from his friends, and a little bit of help from you.  If you’re into low-end bedroom recordings, in the manner of folk music, you’re going to have to take a listen to his stuff over on his BANDCAMP page, where you can download lots of his tracks for a price of your choosing.  He’s just put up The Mistress, and there are some great finds all over the place there, including the below track, which I hope you enjoy.

Drag the River on Daytrotter!

I first got into Drag the River through a bunch of friends who were all about ALL.   You really can’t go wrong with a bunch of pop-punk heroes going country singing about whiskey, Jesus and such.  Luckily, the band, rumored to not be working anymore, just went up on Daytrotter.  It’s got all tracks from an up-and-coming session called 2010 Demons, which are supposedly demos of work that has yet to be finished.  Regardless, one listen to this track below and you’ll see why I love these guys.

New Music from Northern Portrait

We talked about how much we loved Danish band Northern Portrait just after the release of their latest full-length, Criminal Art Lovers.  The group is back now with an amazing new 7″, which features album track “Life Returns to Normal” and B-Side “Some People.”  Sure, there’s a bit of a Morrissey sound in the lead single, but you’ll find that the vocal delivery is actually more fulfilling.  I know, bold statement, but you’ll have to see for yourself.  The swirling jangle of the guitars on “Some People” creates an effecting mood, sure to be loved by all modern pop fans. You can get your hands on the new 7″ by heading over to the Matinee order page.

New Music From Lord Huron

I’m probably running really late on getting a tune up by Lord Huron, but I don’t really care because this sweet jam “Mighty” is just too good not to post.  What can I say, I’m a sucker for hazey pop tunes.  The track is set to appear on a new EP of same name due out November 2nd.  You can also check out some of Lord Huron’s other tunes over on his bandcamp site.  Dig.

New Music from Jim Bryson and The Weakerthans

Honestly, I don’t know too too much about Jim Bryson, other than he’s heralded as one of the great songwriters of Canada.  What did catch my attention is that he’s recorded an album with one of my all time favorites, The Weakerthans.  They combined to record a collection of songs during the Winter of 2010, and it’s titled The Falcon Lake Incident.  I mean, the wintry landscape of Canada probably makes for some pretty solemn numbers, but with the acclaim these two groups get, well, Jim is just Jim, you can imagine how special this all might be. Get your hands on it now.

New Music from Poor Bailey

The indie folk group Poor Bailey have set out on an extraordinary adventure; they’re writing 31 songs, one for each day in October.  For now the work is being titled The October Project, but we’re not sure if the group will slim things down and make it some sort of official release.  We’re bringing you the first track from the project, which has this incredible feel of old Jeff Mangum to it, maybe even a touch of J. Mascis.  Each day the band will offer up a new song for download, and they’ll continue on until they’ve completed the project.  If all the songs sound this good, then we’ll be grateful to have it all on November 1st.
