New Music From Royal Bangs

Knoxville based electro-pop band Royal Bangs have a new single called “Fireball” floating around the web.  The tune is set to appear on the new LP from the band Flux Outside due out March 29th on Glassnote Records.  It’s a bit of a spastic number, but I am digging it none the less.  It’s a good time for a new song from Royal Bangs as they are also playing tons of show this week.  You can catch a full list of where they’ll be on their myspace page.

New Violens Track!

One of the band’s we’re most excited to see at SXSW, Violens, has slowly been leaking out demos and mastered versions of their latest tracks for their next LP, the follow up to Amoral.   You’ll have to wait a few weeks for the mastered version of their latest track, “Be Still,” but if you go to their site you can get a nice listen of this really sweet new track.  I suggest you do so, as this band’s deserving of much more praise than they’ve received. Take a listen right HERE.  And, if you like it, you can buy the first MP3 that they put up last month.  Here’s an old track from the band to get you in the mood.

New Track from Dizzy Eyes

We’ve been super busy with SXSW, so a few things have slipped under the radar, and such is the case with Dizzy Eyes, one of the band’s just signed by our friends over at Hardly Art.  The band just released their new Let’s Break Up the Band 7″ last week, and I’ve been loving the lead title track.  Vocals remind me of Stellastarr, yet there’s a cutting melody that works beneath the entirety of the song, giving just enough bounce to the song to make it more than your average tune.  We’re still happy the guitar is full on this year. Oh, and we included this track on our SXSW Sampler, which you can grab here: SXSW SAMPLER.

Killer SXSW Comp from Dirtnap

The great thing about SXSW is getting to see a lot of great bands you haven’t spent a lot of time with, but for me, that’s not the case with all the acts on Dirtnap Records.  They’ve been putting a lot of great tunes together, several include local Austin/Texas acts like High Tension Wires or the Mind Spiders.  They just put up a little comp HERE, where you can sample their great bands.  Be sure to head out to their showcase on Saturday @ the Easy Tiger if you like what you hear.

New Music From TV On The Radio

We have yet to post any of the new TV On the Radio songs and I think it’s just about time that we did so.  This new jam “Caffeinated Consciousness” is set to appear on the band’s upcoming LP Nine Types of Light due out April 12th.  I’m glad that I’ve finally posted one of the new songs because they are quite good.  You can hear another new slow style jam called “Will Do” over on the gum.

New Music From Let’s Wrestle

Former ATH showcasing band Let’s Wrestle are getting ready to release their sophomore LP Nursing Home later this year on Merge Records.  The album sees the guys growing up quite a bit and moving forward with a heavier sound.  If this single “Dear John” is any indication of what to expect on the new record, I’ll be in line to give it a listen come May 17th.

New Music From Stricken City

As many of you probably now, the UK band we grew to love last year Stricken City have decided to call it quits.  Fortunately for fans of the band, they recently released their final album Losing Colour this month on Kora Records.  Sure we may be a bit late on posting this, but we feel like we owed it to the band to pay homage to some of the sweet tunes they created.  Enjoy new single “Some Say” below.

ATH SXSW Guide & Sampler

It’s that time of year again for us to share with you two of our favorite things in the world: free music and show recommendations.  First up is a sampler consisting of 27 songs from some of the best up and coming bands performing at SXSW this year.  We tried to drop in some of the bigger names you already know with some of the small time guys you may not know much about.  Check out the sampler as a zip file or stream the whole thing on the sampler site.  The guys at Paravel really outdid themselves this year on the design.

Next up is our fancy SXSW guide that started last year and continues on in full power again this year.  The guide features a day by day list of 3-4 of the absolute best shows to attend.  Our goal is to try and slim down that massive list of unofficial shows you have and give you something that’s easy to read, print, or bring up on your slick iphone.  Each day should give you a few free day show options and at least one show to check out at night.  We also kept around our handy dandy food guide created last year by our friend Bonnie.  This guide is of course intended as an “ATH Recommends SXSW” guide and by no means a complete list of unofficial SXSW shows.  For that, we recommend Do512, showlistaustin, ultra8201, donewaiting, or the many many facebook groups.

New Song from The Wrens

Long have I loved The Wrens, who released one amazingly flawless LP, Meadowlands.  They’ve hinted time and time again at new music, but we’ve only gotten glimpses over the past decade.  Today, Stereogum released a track via Epitonic, and I got that warm feeling all over again.  Listening, it has that same brooding/builiding element, forcing you to anticpate the eventual eruption of joy.  Spolier alert: that eruption doesn’t come, as one might expect, but there’s still an element that harkens back to the days of the band’s first album, which immediately makes me smile.  A gentle haze, steady drumming, and that guitar sound. I love it, and I hope you do too.

Introducing They Stay Dead

Nowadays it seems like every body has their hands in some aspect of punk rock, which is definitely okay by me.  You’ll get garage, power-pop, post-punk, etc., but what really grabs me are those bands that remind me of those innocent pop-punk days when it was all about just having a blast with your friends, playing tunes in your garage or over at your friends backyard party.  Here we have a new upcoming band from Oklahoma, They Stay Dead, who just put up their first EP.  It’s everything you want good old school punk to be, full of delicious solos, catchy as all get out, and perfect for just cruising in your car with the windows down and the stereo up high.  I’ve been enjoying this EP all week, and if you’re like me, you just might enjoy it too!
