New(old) Tunes From Carissa’s Wierd

Now I honestly can’t say I was really that into Carrisa’s Wierd back when they gained some popularity back in the late 90s/00s.  I will say that I did however get on their band wagon a couple years ago.  With that being said, I’m glad to see that Hardly Art is planning a compilation album of the long dead group featuring 16 tracks from the Carissa’s Wierd back catalogue.  If you’re feeling spendy, you can pre-order the greatest hits LP now.  Hardly Art is also sharing this new MP3 of and old Carissa’s Wierd favorite “Die”.

Austin A2W: Sleep Good

Austin band Sleep Good is the brain child of local resident Will Paterson who has spent time in big name bands like Sunset and Sound Team.  Will could probably be most closely compared to Alan Palomo since both are young lads in their very early 20s and both have already put out massive amounts of creative material in a very short amount of time.  For the longest time, Will worked on his Sleep Good project completely solo and only used the name as a creative moniker.  A year or so ago though the solo moniker became a full blown band with four other members who have been doing some light touring as of late around Austin.  You’ll be hard pressed to find recorded material from Sleep Good that you can actually download or purchase other than their Autobus Records LP Skyclimber.  I’ve gotten my hands on that album and have really enjoyed the material as one of the most creative pieces of work to come out locally this year.  You’ll also be hard pressed to put a label on this project from Patterson.  At times you’ll hear British twee mixed in with some of the noisier pop elements of Pet Sounds. Then after you think you’ve got it all figured out, you’ll hear a song like “Shoney’s” which sounds like a new take on “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” as performed by Queen.  Needless to say, I’m liking what I hear.  You can download the new record digitally via Band Camp or on the Autobus Records website.

New Tunes from Ugly Cassanova

Ugly Cassanova is the side-project of Modest Mouse frontman Issac Brock.  He’s recorded a bunch of tracks for the soundtrack for the movie 180° South, and this is really the first batch of songs without the band in quite some time.  The soundtrack comes out on June 22nd on Brushfire Records. Personally, this is how I remember Brock in his hey-day, all wobbling vocals with a touch of soul.  The track “Lay Me Down” really takes off once the horns kick in, and you realize that despite some of the trappings of recent MM works, Brock still knows how to write one hell of a tune.  Take a listen.

New Tunes from S. Carey

JagJaguwar just announced that they will be releasing the debut album from S. Carey titled All We Grow on August 24th.   You might no Sean from his gig as one of the percussionists for Bon Iver, and you’ll recognize a similar sound coming from the first single “In The Dirt.”  It has a bedroom quality that’s soft and gentle, warranting repeated listens as you relax on those warm summer evenings.  So far, there’s not a thing not to like, so enjoy.

Against Me! on Daytrotter (+ New Song)

You all know we’re Against Me! fans from way back, so we were excited today when Daytrotter ran a few unreleased tracks from the band, not to mention a couple of songs off the band’s new album, White Crosses, which comes out on June 8th.  Then, Stereogum ran the album’s title track today as well, so if you’re in the mood from some rock, then you should definitely get yourself a look at both posts for today.  Personally, nostalgia will always make me go back to As The Eternal Cowboy, but White Crosses has some pretty solid tracks here, and you know the band will never cease to rock live.

Free EP from Efterklang (sort of)

In 2009, Efterklang was one of our band’s to keep an eye on in 2010, and they lived up to our expectations with their new album Magic Chairs.  Now we’ve got news that the Danes are releasing a free EP with their mutant band, SlaraffenKlang, made with friends Slaraffenland.  Some of the tunes on the five song EP are mash-ups, while some are just joyous jams for you to enjoy with your friends.  So instead of listening to those new Arcade Fire tracks (as they’re mediocre at best), take a listen to this killer ensemble group.  Get your copy of the free EP HERE.  You can also just enjoy this killer track from the Magic Chairs.
