Bart Davenport and the Bedazzled Drop New Tune

Bart Davenport and the Bedazzled aren’t here to establish any new style or kick off any new trend. Instead, the band, honed by Bart through 7 albums, are here to pull out the best Davenport has to offer and put it before listeners. An easy nod would be to Dent May, or mayhaps a revisiting of 80s movie soundtracks. But, close listens reveal that churning guitar that makes dream pop so viable at the moment. You’ll also here a bit of a sharp step that seems to craft a danceable element to sweep you off your feet and into the night. The group will unleash Blue Motel via Lovemonk/Burger Records this Friday.

Show Review: Loma @ The North Door (4/21)

Saturday night, Austin welcomed some locals back into town at The North Door in the form of Loma. The band has been touring fairly extensively on their new Sub Pop debut self titled record. Having seen Cross Record a few years back, I knew that I would be in for a night of lush sounds and elegant vocals, but I wasn’t too sure as to how the new material would play out in the live setting, especially at a venue that is a little off the beaten Red River path. All doubts were erased–Loma is a force to be reckoned with, and I expect big things from this band. Click through to read some more brief thoughts on the evening.

BOYS Drop Another Single

If you’re not looking forward to BOYS‘ debut Rest In Peace, then it’s probably best if you acquaint yourself now, as this record is destined to end up on every year end list. I like to think of this tune as the contemplative number on the record; it opens with slow vocals creeping over your emotions like the fog drifting into town. There’s a brief burst of emphatic pop explosions, before reverting back to the subdued feeling of wonder. We stay there until the track comes to a close, bursting with volume and force before the track fades away. The LP will drop on May 11th via PNKSLM.

Stream New Music from Jess Ledbetter

Jess Ledbetter most recently was the guitarist/vocalist for local Austin gazers, Honeyrude. But, as of right now, she’s working on promoting her new Slow Desert EP. The lead track delves further into the dark world of dream pop, dense in sound, though sparkling spiritually. It’s really about the guitar work too, as if the chords are cautiously walking their way through some uncharted forest, anxiously creeping around each corner. I also applaud the restraint here, as it would clearly be easier to just let the song loose in the end, rather than hold onto the mold she’s crafted; she does not give in to the easy way out. Reminds me a bit of the latest stuff from Wax Idols. The EP will drop on May 4th via Shifting Sounds; you can also catch the song in visualizer format HERE.

Circling Back on Sugar Candy Mountain

The albums are dropping quick and fast this time of year, and one that I’ve been particularly interested in is this Sugar Candy Mountain LP coming in May. Late last week they dropped this delightful new number, almost like a darkened mod-pop version of tropicalia. It’s immediately charming, just by the way the percussion captures your attention. Then you get swept away in the smoky R&B vibes from the vocal performance. Still, careful ears will hear a sense of longing in the guitar chords at the latter half of the tune, illustrating how dynamic the group can be in a short span. Look for Do Right to drop on May 4th via PIAPTK Records.

Stream Enter EP from Millbrook Estates

We’ve been covering the Millbrook Estates in some fashion since their inception (and perhaps before). If you couldn’t grasp from the Tim Leary reference in the band name, the group are aiming at perfecting their own blend of psychedelia. Aside from the opener, all the tracks on the Enter EP span beyond 4 minutes; this is important as it sets the tone for an expansiveness that branches beyond the confines of simple rehash. I think my favorite, at least in the last 24 hours, is “Alvin;” i just love the way David’s vocals hang in out there in the wind as the group swirl behind him. Get in on this while its hot!

New EP from Snowy and Lachlan

Snowy and Lachlan are both members from the Ocean Party, so we’re inclined to share any new project the two work on, even if it’s a boy-band pop group. This weekend, they kindly shared a new EP they worked on together, simply titled Six More Songs. At first, I was stuck with this tune “Drunk” on repeat; I love its pop explosion just before the 1 minute mark. But, as it’s Monday, and we need a pick me up, I’ve been trolling “Do What U Wanna” the most; it’s an upbeat track built on a keyboard backbone, playful in vibe and lyrics. Still, don’t stop there, as I wouldn’t post these songs if I didn’t find them rewarding, so go on, get at em.

Really Love This Sam Valdez

This new track from Sam Valdez just dropped, and it’s quite an enchanting number, particularly considering all the buzz new Mazzy Star got this week. Valdez shares some similarities with Hope Sandoval, especially in the way her voice seems to have this timeless pop sensibility that’s warm around the edges. Musically, she seems to have dialed into the vast expanse of her home state of Nevada, where at times the desert can seem endless; it leaves her music open and striking. She’s just signed on with Nevado Music to release a new EP, featuring this track, later in the Summer.

Show Preview: Loma @ The North Door (4/21)

If you haven’t been listening to Loma and their killer self titled LP, then you’ve been missing out on one of the latest and greatest new bands to surface out of Austin(ish) in the past year. Now, the members of Loma aren’t strangers to the Austin scene, as the band is comprised of 2/3 parts Cross Record and 1/3 parts Shearwater, but it’s time for us to witness this combination of Austin scenesters in this unique form for once and for all. Loma will be playing in their hometown this Saturday, April 21 at The North Door, and it’s in your best interest to go ahead and buy yourself a ticket for the very low price of 12$ while they’re still available. To top it all off, the lovely Jess Williamson will be doing the opening honors. You’re going to be out this Saturday anyways, why not enjoy some beautiful folk driven indie rock while you’re at it? Doors are at 9, get there early for a full night of tunes.

ATH Records alumni Big Bill dropped their excellent Stand By Your Bill late last year, and they’re still churning out videos for all the hits. If you had asked me “What Do You Want on Your Salad” was already a huge hit, and this video only reaffirms the joy and weird that is Big Bill. Personally, I’m most excited about Eric Bill’s salad angels, and I have no idea how Alan plays the drums with those baguettes; who knows what you’ll enjoy when you watch this video. One thing’s for sure, those of you who like your punk left of the dial will run to this jam. Grab the LP over HERE.
