Jamming This Durand Jones

A friend, knowing my affinity for old school soul and R&B, sent me this new Durand Jones tune from his forthcoming self-titled LP with his band the Indications. It’ll only take a few seconds for you to realize the pipes on Jones mean business; think Leon Bridges but with more range. But, while the voice is a powerful instrument, the musicianship has to be present in order to really knock it out of the park; you won’t need to look much further than the first few minutes to see how solid the rhythm section is with these guys. Durand Jones & the Indications will be released by Dead Oceans/Colemine Records on March 16th, with pre-orders offering up a bonus 7″.

Celebrate the Release of Blushing’s Weak EP @ Cheer Ups (1/27)

We’re really really excited to kick of the label side of ATH with our first release of 2018: Blushing‘s Weak EP. It’s a heavy dose of dreamgaze gems, all organized into a handy 12″ record. Several tracks have already garnered raves from the likes of DKFM Radio to the esteemed Gold Flake Paint, so clearly they’ve got something you need. Plus, if you’re in the Austin area, you can catch the band live at their release show at Cheer Up Charlies on Saturday night. It’s a pretty solid bill, with Ringo Deathstarr and Single Lash among bands filling the evening out. New Tune from Annabel Allum

Last year at SXSW I was pretty hyped on Annabel Allum, and that adoration hasn’t died down. She’s just dropped a new track via Killing Moon, offering us a glimpse at what we can hope comes our way at this year’s SXSW (she’s returning!). Her work has taken on a more powerful force as she’s moved into full-fledged band mode…as opposed to her earlier, folkier work. Still, she holds onto that same style when delivering her lyrics, always with a touch of wisdom hanging out there. If you haven’t gotten to know Annabel yet, be sure to check out her All That for What EP!

New Dreamy Video From Wild Arrows

If you’ve been reading this website for any length of time, you should know that we here at ATH have a strong affinity for all things dream pop/shoegaze related. Wild Arrows, out of New York, are making an especially lush brand of shoegaze that will make you swoon. I’ve posted about these folks in the past, but now it’s time to spread the word once again. They’ve just released a new video for the track, “Dreamlike Dream,” and it’s a five and a half minutes of hazy rock. Trance-inducing, the track begs you to listen to the rest of the band’s new release by the same title. You can check out the whole thing on their Bandcamp page.

 

 

Premiere: Hebdo Drops Didn’t Have a Voice

Hebdo has a song reminiscent of many current folk artists, bleeding roots rock vibes with acoustic guitar strums. In his latest effort below, you get the feeling that there’s a traveling spirit blowing through his songs; you can hear the stomp of the percussion contrasted against the rolling guitar chords. His voice carries a sense of yearning, of searching for something; it holds a slight rasp just beneath the polished melodies. Even the image featured in this youtube clip hints at moving, at rolling along down the road of life. Such is the spirit of Hebdo, and one revered here at my home. Look for his new EP later this year!

New Music from Great News

Norway has a special place in my heart, musically…seems I can always trace some bit of my pop affections back to the country. Today, it’s responsible for Great News, offering up this glittering bit of pop rock, harkening back the shimmering pop of the 80s. While the spirit’s uplifting, there are still some gruff bits of distorted guitars pushing through the polished exterior. The band will be releasing their new record Wonderfault on February 16th, and the tune below should be enough evidence that it remains on your radar!

New Jam from Birdskulls

Birdskulls have been on my radar for some time, having appeared previously in one of the many singles from Art Is Hard. Today the label, and band, announced that they’ll be releasing a brand new self-titled 12″. Musically, the song’s a straight-ahead rocker, almost reminiscent of early 00s pop-punk, though the vocals during the verses seem to carry a bit more indifference. It’s just one of those great jams that packs a bunch of substance and joy into a pummeling little burst of fun; I expect that their new EP will carry much of the same; it drops on March 2nd.

Morby and Waxahatchee Cover Molina

It’s pretty easy to love both Kevin Morby and Waxahatchee, but even more so when they join forces for a good cause. And even better, they’re covering songs from Jason Molina, such as the tracks below from Magnolia Electric Co. and What Comes After the Blues. All the proceeds from the release will go to MusicCares…an organization that aims to safeguard and aid all music people in the matters of health. Seems a pretty vital thing if you ask me, and some great tunes too!

Hook Laden Lo Fi Pop from Sick Balloons

San Diego’s Sick Balloons belong to the cult of bands who never stop writing music; they’ve got a bevy of releases, with one more coming this Friday via the good folks over at Bleeding Gold Records. The recording doesn’t have the studio polish, but that lo-fi quality makes the track seem more earnest, more willing to take risks. It’s got a slight feel in the vein of Guided By Voices, especially in the vocal region. Feel free to invest some time in the band’s back catalog, and be sure to grab the new EP when it’s released this Friday.
