Cherry Release New Video

It doesn’t take much more than being signed to Lame-O Records for me to be attached to a band. But, in the case of Cherry and their latest song, they’ve already got me hooked. The video is gritty, moving across various mundane activities (though I’m attached to the backyard soccer scene) and splicing it with members of the band. Also, it has dogs. People love dogs. In the track itself you hear earnest guitar pop, with guitar lines reaching up to the angular heavens as the drums crash down and vocals drawl across the front of the mix. It’s sonically focused, yet relaxed in the delivery…all showing promise of the band’s forthcoming record, Dumbness, out on September 29th.

Check This Premiere of New Verandan

Finnish label Soliti has quite a remarkable stable, and this year they signed what I think is an artists capable of breaking across the globe: Verandan. With one incredible single under their belt, the band bring you this brand new single (released digitally on the 14th) to enjoy. It reminds me of the best of the pop world, combing chamber elements with delicate touches of atmospherics…all the while keeping a nice bit of energy in the track. Just imagine the playful bounce of Belle and Sebastian mingling with the more introspective world of the Clientele. The group even throws in some joyous “ooh oohs” near the end, so be sure to stay ’til then.

Fall In Love with Bunny

I’m not sure I can place the sound of Bunny, but I know that its a great way to begin my morning…and yours too. Simple percussion, a light horn buzz work hard behind the guitars to aid in the song’ seductive quality. Jessica Viscius has this really smoky vocal, falling somewhere near the sounds of Hope Sandoval, if only a slight bit deeper in tone. She’s currently wrapping up the final bits of her new Sucker EP, which is slated to come out later this year. So enjoy your first taste of great things to come from Bunny.

Loving This New Florist

I’m looking into my crystal ball for Yea End Lists…I think there will be a spot in there for Florist. Their latest single is pretty stunning, calming in every way. Emily’s voice is just perfect, sitting in the front of the mix, relaxed in the best possible way; she seems perfectly comfortable taking ownership of this track. Meanwhile, the rest of the band flesh out the tune with the subtle sublime, adding atmospheric notes that twinkle in the distance. If Blue Could Be Happiness will be released on September 29th via Double Double Whammy…you won’t want to miss this album, I promise you that.

Give Becca Richardson a Chance

Time to turn things in a different direction today, offering up this brand new recent Becca Richardson track. Richardson’s voice is going to steal the show here, smooth at the beginning, then rising to new heights as she pushes the song along. But, what I really look is the understated vibe of the musical composition. Its subtlety allows Becca to punctuate the right notes as the groove settles listeners in their seats. She’ll be self-releasing her new album, We Are Gathered Here, on October 6th.

New Video & Single From Small Leaks Sinks Ships

I’m not always one for videos, but when they are as beautifully done as this one from Portland based Small Leaks Sinks Ships, I’ve got to share. The video for “Dancing Devil” can at times be a bit creepy with a shadowy, all black creature following a blindfolded young lady around a lake front cabin. The visuals play nicely with the dance inducing, head nodding worthy beats of the song. It’s sort of like old school Cold War Kids or even a Portugal the Man. Well done lads.

New album Golden Calf is out on October 13th via Lefse Records.

Brand New Destroyer Tune

While I’m enjoying going through all last week’s tunes, it would be hard to overlook that there’s a new Destroyer tune floating out there today. He’s perhaps one of the most distinctive voices out there in the music world, and he puts that voice on display for this song’s opening two minutes. For that period, the song’s pretty sparse, but then it expands with furthered textures…keyboard, guitar and more pronounced percussion. He’s titled his new record, ken, and it will be out come this October via Merge Records.

Another Gem From Minor Poet

Way back in March I was very excited to discover new Richmond based artist Andrew Carter and his project known as Minor Poet. Well as promised back then, I’d be sharing more new music as it came my way. Today we’ve got this great new track called “Judith Beheading Holofernes” for your eagerly awaiting ears. Once again we are treated to a beautiful, lo-fi pop number worthy of multiple spins.

A self-titled debut album will be coming from Minor Poet on August 25th via Egghunt Records.

Adam Ostrar Offers Soft Ballad

I’m hoping it rains today, as this track from Adam Ostrar is perfect for watching the rain stream down your windows. It has that magical touch that Nick Drake had, airy vocals draping themselves atop careful little trickling guitar lines while percussion keys and percussive elements add depth to the background. Some balladry is so intimate you won’t want to share it with anyone else, and Ostrar is giving us precisely that. Look for his new record Brawls in the Briar on October 13th via Super Secret Records.

Late to This Alex Calder Track

Well, I’m finally making some headway on these emails from my vacation, and I’m grateful to have this Alex Calder tune sitting in the inbox. He’s just announced his new self-titled album via Captured Tracks on October 20th, and this lead single has a lot of promise. The song moves back and forth between bouncing guitar licks and softer moments to break up the pace. It’s not quite indie pop, yet not quite modern indie rock, finding that happy spot that should pique listeners before the record drops.
