Show Preview: Rozwell Kid @ Sidewinder (7/25)

Date July 25th
Location Sidewinder
Doors 6:30 PM
Tickets $12 from Eventbrite

Looking for a rock show on a Tuesday night in Austin? Look no further than the loaded line up down at Sidewinder. Headlined by West Virginia rockers Rozwell Kid, your sure to be treated to a show by the main act. Personally, I’m excited for openers Great Grandpa, though their set may be short. And middle act Vundabar, out of Boston, is certainly no slouch. This is a great lineup for a middle of the week show.

Hear a New BOYS Track

While we’re patiently awaiting the release of BOYS self-titled EP, they’re teasing us with this dreamy dosage of pop. The vocals come in breathy, almost gasping for air, which when combined with the guitar dancing around creates a stunning hook. The ante is upped when synths (maybe backing vocals…sounds more like backing vocals) falling from the skies of the song, creating a wall of sound that’s pretty memorable. I think the vibe of this track on the whole is worthy of your listening; I can’t get enough of it.

Amy O Is What We Need

Next week we’ll finally get to hear the entirety of Amy O‘s new album, Elastic, and with that, she’s teased us with another excellent single. There’s something in her songwriting, particularly on this track that reminds me of early Tegan and Sara or Rilo Kiley; it has an innocent vibe, with cutting commentary bubbling beneath the song’s surface. Amy says this was the final track recorded for her new record, so its nice to think of this track as a “final goodbye, until we meet again” moment. We’ll meet again on August 4th when the record is released via Winspear; they’ll also have a limited edition zine Yoko Oh Yes featuring interviews and conversations with female musicians if you pre-order the LP!

More New Tunes from Oro Swimming Hour

Not quite sure what it is, but there’s something special with Oro Swimming Hour. At times, the songs almost feel muddled, as if they’ve done too much. But, this music needs patience and time; if you choose to give it that, the layers peel away leaving the core of the band’s pop sensibility bare and honest. It’s part folk, part bedroom pop and part experimentation…all of it leaving you enchanted. The group will be releasing their LP Penrose Winoa this Friday via Art is Hard Records, so be sure to sample another jam!

How About One More From Slotface?

The weekend seems like a perfect time to enjoy another new song from Norway’s finest Slotface. We’ve already heard a couple of raucous songs from the new album, and this new track “Pitted” delivers yet again. I continue to dig the band’s throwback pop/punk vibe similar to Cruiserweight or even the recently reunited Rainer Maria. This is going to be one hell of a fun album.

Slotface will drop new album Try Not to Freak Out on September 16th via Propeller Recordings (pre-order).

Sun Riah Plays Track House on Saturday

Oklahoma’s Sun Riah is coming into Austin this Saturday night to play over at Track House. Why’s this so important? Well, for one, it celebrates the release of her new album, Sitting with Sounds and Listening for Ghosts…put out on cassette and CD by Austin’s own Keeled Scales tomorrow! Secondly, this might be some of the best harp music you’ll get to hear in an intimate setting; she’s already drawn comparisons to Joanna Newsom, though I think Sun Riah has a crisper vocal tone that I think some of Joanna’s detractors will love. Should be an enchanting night, with sets from Blair Robbins (AMA), Chase Weinacht (Marmalakes) and Future Lives.

Enjoy the Sparrow People

Some labels, like Emotional Response, have a knack for discovering great acts you might not hear, such as stunning new group Sparrow People from Australia. The band will debut a new 7″ for the label while they work on their full length, and I’m falling into a deep wormhole with these songs. There’s this simplicity to their songwriting, much like my adored Comet Gain; it’s the execution of the songs, and the added layers, that truly make this some of the best casual pop you’re going to hear. Here’s two songs for you to love.

End Today with This Florist Tune

Been sort of a slow day around these parts, but wanted to wrap it up with this great new Florist tune. The band won me over with last year’s The Birds Outside Sang, and it didn’t take long to pen another lovely track (or album). I love the calming nature of this tune; it’s a subtle charmer, mostly working around the vocals and a light strum. There are some extra bits adding texture to the track from the distance, elevating the song’s quality. They’ll release If Blue Could Be Happiness on September 29th via Double Double Whammy, with a lengthy tour through September/October.

Bright New Single From Swimming Tapes

I might be a bit late in sharing this one, but who cares really when the song is so good. The song is “Whats On Your Mind” and is brought to you by London based group Swimming Tapes. It reminds me a bit of a band like Beach Fossils with it’s bright and sunny guitars over quiet, yet perfectly placed vocals. This should be an easy listen and easy song to enjoy for just about anyone.

Swimming Tapes will release new EP Soft Sea Blue on September 15th via B3SCI Records in the U.S. and Hand in Hive Records everywhere else.

Luna Cover Mink Deville

I’m an avid Luna fan, and while its not fresh music, I’m excited to hear what one of my favorites will do with an album full of covers. Here we have the band covering Mink Deville‘s “Let Me Dream If I Want To,” an obscure tune from the classic CBGB era. While modern production might be obvious, the vibe of that era seems to be flowing through Luna; I mean, did we doubt that Dean and Co. couldn’t pull it off? Look for their collection of covers on A Sentimental Education, out September 22; there’s also a brand new EP of instrumental tunes titled A Place of Greater Safety (all recorded by Jason Quever).
