New Ballad from Will Stratton

I always love to mix up my musical tastes, and I’m assuming you’re looking to do the same. If that’s the case, then why not listen to this ballad from Bella Union‘s new signing, Will Stratton. At first, the careful picking of the guitar won me over, but in moving forward, there’s a really careful buzz emanating from the way the strings are plucked; its one of my favorite bits of recorded music.Look for Rosewood Almanac to hit stores on May 12th…hopefully including more great balladry.

More Music from Lunch Ladies

If you’re reading this blog, note that this is the 3rd time we’ve featured Lunch Ladies in our coverage, and it’s pretty deserved. There’s an airy quality to this track, with just a hint of jangling guitars that fit nicely into the realm of indiepop. However, the band straddle that sound with a more nostalgic dream pop leaning…so I can check off two of my musical obsessions. There’s a special vocal performance right around the two minute mark that I particularly enjoyed. Good Eye Records will release Down on Sunset Strip on March 10th.

Show Preview: Moving Units Cover Joy Division @ 3Ten (Tonight)

It looks like I’ll have my electronic dancing shoes on a lot this week, hitting up my second electronically influenced show tonight at 3Ten. Why? Well, for starters, Moving Units will be playing a set filled with Joy Division tunes (and an original set too); you never get tired of hearing those tracks, no matter who plays them (as long as they do it well). But, an even bigger highlight for me is that Soviet is kicking the night off. I remember catching the band a long time ago at SXSW, and played the song I’ve got below for every friend that came into my life; I always tried to turn them onto the great dance tunes. Doors are at 8 PM, and you can maybe grab tickets and dancing shoes right HERE.

Check the New Rays Video

You’ve by now been anticipating the new Rays album as much as I have, and today we’re checking back in as the band bring a video to the fold for their new single “Made of Shadows.” The tune has these sharp little guitar cuts, almost dancing around one another, while the vocals are thrown out with a rabid indifference. You’ll find the charm of the band apparent in the lo-fi, early MTV style of the video; it’s not like we want all our bands to take themselves too seriously, after all. Their debut album will hit on March 30th, courtesy of the powerhouse label, Trouble in Mind.

Jaye Bartell Shares New Track With Angel Olsen

Jaye Bartell has been crafting poetic tunesfor a while now, spinning new tunes to match the passing of time. 2017 sees him recording new material, including these two tracks you can take a listen to below. While both feature his distinct vocals and elegant songwriting, each has their own strengths. The first song, “Dance With Me,” includes the beautiful addition of vocals from Angel Olsen to harmonize with Bartell’s dulcet tones. It’s a gorgeous track that reminds me a bit of some Silver Jews tunes. If you stick around and spin the second song, “Slow Going,” you’ll be pulled in by the storytelling that Bartell brings to the table. Take a listen and enjoy these beautiful tunes.

Really Stoked on Michelles

I spend a lot of time wading through emails day after day, always looking for something that’s probably going to get overlooked, unjustly. This Michelles tune, for instance, is a prime example, filling my ears with great energy, though just enough of something different to keep me interested. It almost holds onto a touch of Britpop, and throughout it twists and turns with these perfect drips of ecstasy. Honestly, one of the reasons I think I’m listening repeatedly is there’s not a lot out there that I can compare this Chicago act to, and in saying that, that says enough. Good and refreshing. Dark as a Daisy, the new LP, will be released later on this year. Sample this tasty treat.

ATX Spotlight: New Desert Culture

Just another day in Austin, with another great song coming out of our fair city…this time by way of Desert Culture. On their latest single, the band seem to have that swinging psychedelia, though I think there’s an element of polish that seeps through. That comes during the chorus, and as that settles, the guitar notes seem to take on a loftier turn that holds onto some Southern swagger while still keeping some pop sensibility within the song. Daniel Vega’s and his band will celebrate this new release with a show tonight at Hotel Vegas…if you’re looking for something to do.

Another New David Bazan Tune

Yep, another day, another hit for Undertow Records. I don’t know what it is, but they have their finger on my record collection at the moment, offering up a new tune from David Bazan. He’s continuing his output with an electronic backbone, using a simplistic loop to create space for his introspective pondering. I like how the tones of the musical notes seem to match the deeper bits of Bazan’s voice, and of course, it’s always great to hear how David looks at the world…especially his world. Care, the title of the new LP, will be released on March 7th, and you better believe I’ll have it in a matter of hours!

Pleased to Meet You: Slow Dancer (SXSW Artist)

I feel like I’ve got a pretty good grasp of what’s going on in the Aussie music scene, but I haven’t heard of the slow jam stylings of Slow Dancer until today. The pop crooner is so new in fact, that he hasn’t quite made it to the States, though that will surely change after announcing he’s signed with ATO Records and has agreed to play at SXSW. His new video displays an understated groove to it, allowing plenty of room for his rhythmic voice to take on the focus. Shout out to one of the female stars in the video for her “Don’t Mess With Texas” t-shirt! Look for a new album from the project come Spring.
