ATX Spotlight: Magna Carda

Given, I don’t often talk about hip-hop, mostly because I’m not entirely sold by the modern fare, but I’ve always appreciated Austin’s Magna Carda. I’ve always admired Megz vocal delivery; it’s so casual yet has this flow to it that makes it roll off every little beat. They’re supported by Ava Raiin on this number, adding a soulful R&B polish to the the number; I’m actually drawn into the atmospheric samples floating through the background. As of now, the band’s wrapping up their new album, but this number shows so much promise it’s hard not to imagine the group blowing up bigger than they hoped!

New Music from David Bazan

We’d be remiss if we didn’t talk about the new David Bazan, one of our favorites here at the site. While my introduction came via his early work, predominantly folk-inspired, Bazan has flirted with using electronics as his career has progressed. Here he is armed with nothing but electronics and his poetry. It probably doesn’t hurt that Richard Swift jumped in for production, which always carries a great deal of weight. I always look for little snippets in his words, and I think today the line “all of us need major healing/come and get yours in the sun” especially hits home for many of us. Care is the title of his new release, and on March 7th, I expect to find many more little lyrical gems to attach myself to in the coming months; look for the album on March 7th.

Goddam Nobody Preps New EP

Goddam Nobody is a new name to me, but I’m really excited for what the project offers after hearing this new single cross the seas. It’s got that pleasant blend of psychedelia and folk that’s had listeners ears for some time. On this song, the vibe is so relaxed that you’ll be pining for warm days in the sunshine where this song helps you bask in the rays. Ready to get rid of Winter? Well, then look for the new Dead Beat EP coming your way later this February from Super Fan 99.

New Video from Love Sport

I’ve talked about Finnish act Love Sport several times before, and we’re back today to bring you this brand new video from the band, featuring a “boy who could not dream.” This track has a hook-laden guitar that rings through your speakers, while you watch the journey of the stuffed pig traipsing through nightlife in Helsinki. I always enjoy the balance between the bands discordant notes and their warm pop underbelly, with a special change in tone around the 2.40 mark. Their debut album Dull Tracks will be released by Soliti Music on April 13th worldwide.

ATX Spotlight: Another Alex Napping Tune

In what’s shaping up to be a really great year for Austin musicians, Alex Napping is one of those acts that’s high up on our list, at least in so far as esteem goes. Today the band released another single from their forthcoming Mise en Place, which will be released via Father Daughter Records in May. While the casual indie rock sound of this track is in line with what we know from the band, I think the quality of Alex’s voice is what’s really standing out here; it almost seems like she’s singing on the cusp of every breath she releases. I like the slight tonal twist when she offers the lines “I can dream all night.” Give it a listen, and add the group to one of Austin’s great exports.

Breezy New Single From POKAL

POKAL is a Swedish band new to me as of of today you should be listening to right now. Though breezy is a word tossed around a little too much nowadays to describe music, I can find no better word for this music. It’s bright, shiny, and full of a delightful bit of pop tendencies. Check out “Great Expectations” below and enjoy what I’ve been listening to all day.

Alasdair Roberts Offers Playful Folk

In a few weeks Alasdair Roberts will bring us his new album, Pangs, and today he’s bringing out his most playful bit of folk. The song opens with such a lighthearted mood that you might be surprised when it settles for a more traditional feeling during the song’s chorus. It’s this sort of songwriting that’s elevated Alasdair, building his own sound on the back of folk traditions, while pushing it in a new direction. I love the slight warble in his voice, which could perhaps be owed to his Scottish accent, but just listen to the way lyrics roll off his tongue in the song’s latter half and you’ll be just as appreciative. Pick up the new record on February 24th via Drag City.

Brand New Alex Chilltown Tune

Are you looking for a brooding bit of dream pop today? If so, then this new Alex Chilltown track is going to do your ears some justice. It’s almost five minutes of spaced pop music, moving slowly with a really deep bass line that gives ample room for twinkling guitar chords and synth notes to shine. I love how the song references indiepop in its structure, but holds back on the obvious emotional appeal by drawing the notes out; it’s like listening to a happy version of Joy Division. The group have just signed on to Witchgirl Recordingto release their new EP, Eaten Up By Nothing, which will come out on February 24th.

New Music from Acting Strange

Lately I’ve been looking backa lot to find musical solace in my life, and when I came across this new tune from Acting Strange, I was really excited, as the song not only looks back on the innocence of early Beatles, it also makes a nod to early 70s glam. It’s a feel-good, straight-ahead jam that exhibits a wonderful control of pop structures, keeping things simple in order to maximize the appeal for listeners. The group will release Talk Talk Talk on March 31st via In Black Records, so it should be chock-full of catchy numbers you’ll want to hear again and again.
