Good Old Guitar Pop from The Trouble with Templeton

twttI love the way this new track from The Trouble with Templeton takes a casual stroll to draw in the listener; you’ve got to give it a careful ear as the song moves along. There’s some minor bursts of sound eruption, fitting into the perfect moment of the song. Eventually, it all settles and slowly begins to fade away, taking the song into its closing moments. To me, it holds the perfect balance, giving just enough oomph in the right places. The group has a new record, Someday Buddy, which will be released on December 2nd via Bella Union.

More Music from Muuy Biien

muybienMuuy Biien has been on our radar for some time, fed to us by one of our Athens connections. That being said, they’re taking on a new approach, at least in regards to their last few singles. There’s more creativity, playing on this track with a darkened tone over a piano backbone. In that, however, the band holds true to their past aesthetic, but loses some of the fuel and energy that made them so exciting…this is new territory. When Age of Uncertainty hits on October 28th, I get the feeling that we’ll get something refreshing from the band; it’s actually exciting to hear a band you love totally switch it up on you.

Give Bouquet a Listen

bouquetYou looking for that calming pop music to soothe your soul after watching last night’s debates…or at least reading your Facebook feed? I think the subtle beauty of this new Bouquet track is the perfect way to start your day then. Synthesized drum loops, meandering guitar and a pleasant vocal can make your day better. There are some notes that reach the heights of Beach House, though things are filled out by a male counterpoint, balancing out the craft. Feel like we all need our day and our world to improve, and this is putting me in the right head space.

ACL Festival Preview: Lucy Dacus

lucyACL Festival is this weekend, and while a great deal of the acts are well-known, the fest is still scoring some great acts on the undercard, like Lucy Dacus. She’s been writing some incredible songs that seem to have gone about rather quietly, which is unfortunate, for you. Matador Records released No Burden earlier this year, and it’s filled with these tracks that take personal recordings, and expand them into something wholly intoxicating. I mean, just listen to “I Don’t Wanna Be Funny Anymore,” and tell me that you’re not rushing to find out more about her. I included the track below to do some of the work for you. And while you’re all about Radiohead this week, don’t forget you paid to see tons of tunes, so schedule yourself some time at 2:30 over on the BMI Stage on Saturday.

dsc_0521Every once in a while, I grab the camera knowing there are a few bands playing that will have some friends out and about, on stage or off. Last Friday night was one such night with Tres Oui and Lou Rebecca featured in a record release show for Fort Never at Cheer Up Charlie‘s and Night Drive closing out a night of electronic goodness at Swan Dive (a venue I don’t got to often enough given the lineups recently).

Here’s New Tunes from Temples

templesI’ll got out on a limb and say that I thought Temples were an excellent act; I even think I would choose them over Tame Impala (as both rose to fame at similar times). Now, the band is back with a new tune, though this seems to be in that world where their psych influences crash into the pop sensibility of Yoshimi-era Flaming Lips. That’s not entirely a bad thing, as I can get behind both bits, but there’s a bit of dialing it in. We’ll see how the entirety of their new forthcoming album shapes up, but for now, I’m straddling the fence on this new stuff.

Brand New Dark Blue

darkblueartSeems like just a bit ago that wewere introduced to Dark Blue, and they’re gearing up for the release of their new album, Start of the World. I’m rather impressed with this new single, as the guitar’s bring on a slightly heavy discord, chords screeching out every so often. The vocals, however, hold onto the group’s penchant for pop sensibility, offering up a deep croon discussing a lover’s lament. I like the fact that they’re not trying to fit into any modern mold, just offering up a tried and true formula of heavy guitar pop. Look for the new LP on November 4th from 12XU.

Bit of Psych Rock From The Tambourine Girls

tambourinegirlscroppedsml-1You know how the story goes right? I’ve never heard of a band prior to today, but they impressed me with a memorable single… blah blah. You’ve heard it before and it’s happening again today with this new single called “Cupo” from Australian based act The Tambourine Girls. At its core, the song is most definitely of the psych rock genre and the band execute inside that sound quite well. Production is tight, the washed out vocals fit in perfectly, and musicianship is spot on. Carry on.

The Tambourine Girls will release their self-titled debut album on November 4th.

ATX Spotlight: New Music from RF Shannon

I’ve been a fan of RF Shannon since I caught wind of their work via Punctum Records, and now Shane Renfro ismoving forward with thebrand new Other Trails EP. Perhaps one of my favorite things about the project is that it consistently acknowledges the influence of Texas, be it in the sound, or the imagery, like in the video below. You get a bit of both here, which is just another reason to keep an eye on all the work that’s promised to be on its way; not to mention that there’s always this level of thoughtfulness streaming from RF Shannon releases. I don’t really need to say more than that you’ll enjoy this tune, and probably the EP when it’s released on October 21st via Keeled Scales.
