We Missed Bad Sports

badsports1A few weeks ago, Bad Sports dropped this single, promoting their newest effort for Dirtnap Records. We’ve long supported the Austin/Denton group, and this track is the perfect example of their strengths. They make simple statements with their lyrics, added a pounding rhythm then Orville and Daniel’s vocals give the impression that this is rock n’ roll meant for a huge stadium. Anthemic rock n’ roll only succeeds if you mean it, and if you’ve caught they various acts these guys are involved in (Radioactivity, OBN IIIs, Video), then you know no one means it more.

Justin Peter Kinkel-Schuster Goes Solo

unnamed (3)Justin Peter Kinkel-Schuster has made a name for himself over the last several years as the primary songwriter, singer, and guitar player for indie rock band Water Liars. With all of his success as part of a band, Kinkel-Schuser has decided to step out on his own for a bit and take a shot at recording and performing as a solo musician. The first taste of his new material was offered up yesterday with this new single “Headed South”. It’s downright beautiful and features a sort of melancholic, yet sill somehow bright take on the songwriter genre.

Fika Recordings Welcome Palomica

honeydewFika Recordings already has a decent stable of great acts (Stanley Brinks, Sally Shapiro), but adding Palomica to the fold just upped the ante a bit. Bouncing pop music never sounded so good in the morning, and the youthful spirit of the song has left a grin on my face for the twenty minutes. This song features a conversation between a male and a female, trading their perspectives, filled with fruit imagery. This single will be featured on the group’s second album, Petito, which should be out via the label later on in the year.

Dark Electro Pop from Silent Wave

silentwaveLooking over today’s earlier posts, feel like I went heavy on guitar-pop and the like, so I wanted to spend the afternoon with Silent Wave. The band, in my mind, sounds like a more accessible version of the Knife…at least in regards to the tonal touch on the vocals. However, they differ in that they seem to evolve in a manner that allows them to crest at just the right moments to maximize emotional power for the audience. As of now, this is just a stand alone single, but I’ll keep you posted as more info comes our way.

Rejoice! New Teenage Fanclub

teenagefanclubSome bands never get old. Album after album, you devour the songs, put them on playlists and share with all your friends. For me, one of the bands I always go back to is Teenage Fanclub, and they’ve just announced their newest album in their long running career. It’s exactly what you’d expect, filled with careful power chords and great vocal melodies that carry warmth to listener’s ears. And of course, it’s a love song, but with lines like “there is pain in this world/I can see it in your eyes,” they show that their subject matter is as timeless as their songs. Look for the new effort, Here, on September 9th via Merge Records.

More New Music from Tres Oui

tresRemember that time when we helped put out the first Literature LP? That was awesome. So, we’ve kept close relations with the band, especially with their Austin based side-project Tres Oui (featuring Nate and Seth). They just recently uploaded a gem of an indiepop tune via the Office Series for Unblinking Ear Records. It’s washed in a nice coat of synths, washing over their cutting guitar chords. It seems like the perfect tune for performance, which if you’ve caught the band live, is exhilarating as Nate always takes complete ownership of the stage. Keep and eye out folks.

If you haven’t caught on to the new Holy Balm single, you’re excused, though it’s definitely the perfect summer hit. Still, the band just released a video for the track, so now you get another chance to fall in love with this tune, not to mention a look into the band’s artistic aesthetic. Their album, Activity, is destined to be a hit for the dance floors for the rest of the year; it’s being released on August 5th, 2016 via Chapter Music.

Chook Race: The Next Great Australian Act

chookraceWhile we’re constantly fawning over the Australian scene on our site, the country itself seems to continuously export great guitar pop…and we’re adding Chook Race to that list. The more I listen to this track, it’s the care taken to the guitar playing in the mix that really stands out in my ears, but I found myself hooked on something else entirely. Wait for the chorus, the most simplest moment…”bop, bop.” Monosyllabic phrases never sounded so enticing, so worthy of playing on repeat. Around the House is the title of the band’s new record, which will be released on September 2nd via Trouble in Mind Records.

New Music from Steve Adamyk Band

steveDammit if this isn’t the catchiest track that Steve Adamyk Band have written to date. I was caught with the guitar sounds from the get-go, but when the vocals blasted in I turned the speakers up…backing vocals are added in just the right places to maximize the tonal hook (including Colleen Green making an appearance). In a world where everyone’s excited about the revival of late emo sounds, I’d much rather turn to the classic sounds of great pop punk, which is where these guys look to be headed with their new effort Graceland. Look for the new effort on July 29th via Dirtnap Records.

Brand New Basketball Shorts

basketballTogether with our friends at Fleeting Youth Records, we’re excited to release Hot and Ready, the new Basketball Shorts LP. With the NBA season over, it’s time to look forward to football in the fall…and these Austin punkers have the perfect track for you, especially you Texas folks: “Romo to Dez.” While the song references our favorite scoring duo, the song’s actually a love song…here’s what singer Ben Shorts has to say:

“I am a lifelong Cowboys fan. I mean I grew up in Dallas in the 90s. It was only time before I let it out in song. This song though, is more about how I felt when I use to see this one person I was dating. I would get so excited when I thought about them, and the only thing I could relate to that excitement was when Romo hits Dez for a touchdown pass. In my head I wrapped up the anticipation, the tension, and the release, all in one phrase. When I think about you, I Romo to Dez.”
