broncosimmonsWhile Austin gets a lot of Texas’ musical accolades, there’s always been a seen up North on I-35, be it Denton, Ft. Worth, or in this case, Dallas, which is the home of Bronco Simmons. I really dig this single off their Younger Days EP; it has the feeling of hook-laden indie rock, though I think the gruff quality of the vocals really gives off enough attitude to make it all interesting…worthy of repeated listens. Look for the release this coming May, and keep an eye on the young act from D-town.

More Synth Pop from Red Sleeping Beauty

redsleepingWhen I talked about the Mi Amor 7″ a few weeks back I mentioned that Red Sleeping Beauty really seemed to be going for it again, with deserved success. Today, Labrador and Shelflife released another track from the forthcoming album, and it’s a hit. I love the tone of the vocals (dark, sometimes smoky), especially when they coolly move into the chorus. Synth work is playful, though it’s not banging you over the head like some EDM sorts, allowing you to take in the pleasure of great electronic pop. The record is titled Kristina and has a release date of June 17th. You want real pop music? Here you go.

New Music from Elvis Depressedly

elvisI’m a day late on this Elvis Depressedly track, but I’m such a fanboy of Matthew Cothran that I’d be remiss if I didn’t give this song some love. Of course, like many of Cothran’s collections it’s a short number, but one that gives you enough emotive pull to immerse yourself in his work. I love the bit of bounce that seems to come with the synth work that’s sitting behind his voice. I’m excited there’s new work, as this single comes with the announcement of the Holo Dreamin/California Pleasures LP, being released by Run for Cover Records on June 3rd. Still going to stand behind this as one of my favorite things.

Get Funky with The Red Krayola

redkrayolasNot sure there’s really anything at all that sounds like The Red Krayola, and in doing that, this seems like an important piece to involve yourself with today. It’s high on the funk level, but in doing that, it sounds a lot like the remnants of the dub-influenced scene that took over the UK. Lyrics are delivered in a hap-hazard bit of spoken word, forcing the band to walk you through step by step with each bubbling bass note or guitar chord. Don’t sleep on this legendary act, as they’re releasing Baby and Childcare on May 13th via Drag City.

Sharks in the Deep End – Killin Machine (Album Premiere)

sharksinthedeependPop music has been around for so long, that you have to work really hard to come up with something unique, something vital for listeners. In the case of Austin’s Sharks in the Deep End, the band had to leave Austin to hole themselves up in Connecticut and just focus on the songwriting, leaving us with the dynamic Killin’ Machine. “Love in Reverse” is the album’s statement piece, the one that led to the recording session; the way the song builds slowly and opens up into the chorus is pretty magnificent. It all leads you to the record’s standout “Shadows in the Sunset,” which seems to up the ante on modern indie rock, both in energy and songwriting. Perhaps my favorite thing about the Killin’ Machine is it’s cohesiveness, whether the band is blasting forward or offering you a slower mood as in “Loveyoutoo.” Every little detail, every little synth note seems united throughout the entire LP. The band is releasing it on April 22nd, celebrating by throwing a release party at Sidewinder with Ruby Jane and the Reckless and Flavor Raid.

Quiet Beauty From Aloha

untitledLet’s get real here, I honestly had no idea that old favorite Aloha were still making music together in 2016. Last I’d heard they put out an album about 6 years ago and I hadn’t heard much noise from the group since. Apparently this is due to my lack of interest in reading other sites… So as news to me, here’s the latest single from the guys called “Don’t Wanna Win”. I’m really enjoying the hushed qualities and the incredibly tight instrumentation in this song. Cheers to making more great music together.

Twinkling Pop Rock from Twin River

twinriverThose who know me, know I’m a sucker for the guitar sound that you’ll hear throughout the latest single from Twin River. It’s a little bit dreampop, a little bit indie pop, but when employed here it’s the energetic source for “Settle Down.” Deeper inside the track comes a more casual approach with the vocal delivery, letting your soul relax while the song moves around you. That guitar we mentioned gets its own spotlight mid-track as it’s allowed to solo all over the place, holding the song together in its own dynamic fashion. This tune will appear on the group’s new LP, Passing Shade, which comes out on June 17th via Light Organ Records.

Soft Side of Rae Fitzgerald

raeI’m really enjoying this great new tune from Rae Fitzgerald as I look out the window at the pouring rain. The track offers a slow pace of careful pop built up by a nice electronic background. When the song picks up pace just a little bit for the chorus, that warm sensation washes over you as Rae details her personal experience through they lyrical content. This is our first listen to work from Popular Songs for Wholesome Families, which she’ll be releasing on her own on June 3rd.

We’ve Got Retail Space!

retailspaceRetail Space is a pair from Brooklyn brandishing catchy pop music that you won’t want to turn off. While the band play upon the trading melodies of male and female vocals, they aren’t one to sound like too many of their contemporaries; I, for one, really like the energy that they’re kicking out. Like the best hits, the chorus is perfect for singing along, and the propulsive nature of the synth work builds you towards that emotional release. They’ll be releasing In the Lotia this June, and this our first listen…and what a listen it is.

New Music from Stone Cold Fox

stonecoldI really like this new track from Stone Cold Fox. There’s vocal bits that remind me of early Beach House, though I feel like you can hear just a little bit more of a soulful longing. Musically, the band has more of a sprawling noise based upon guitars rather than electronic washes, which definitely ups my enjoyment. And, the vocals remain the song’s focal point, accented by the stabbing guitar chords and machine-gun drum hits; it leaves you with a powerful impression that begs you to come back for more. The group release the Tunnel Vision EP next Friday.
