gardens_villas_tourA little bit ago Gardens & Villa announced the release of their upcoming record, Music For Dogs, and gave us a new single of their swirling electrified pop music. They’ve returned again with another new track from that record, called “Everybody.” Whereas the last tune they shared pushed into a garage-y soundscape at points, this tune is more straightforward synth pop; its pulsating synths provide a tone of paranoia and anxiety, which is doubled up by the fast paced falsetto vocals. Later on more piano comes quickly as the band spirals carefully out of control in this great synth pop jam. Look out for Music For Dogs, out August 21st on Secretly Canadian.

New Stuff From Chad Valley

HugoI am a fan. We are fans. Hugo Manuel’s Chad Valley project was a side deal from the band Jonquil. When I caught Chad Valley doing a fill-in set during SxSW several years ago, I forgot who I was there to see. I’ve since seen Hugo a few times as Chad Valley and once with Jonquil. Left happy each time.

So Chad Valley is back with a new song called “True”, the first single from Entirely New Blue, a ballad to dance pop bliss. Cascine is releasing the album and pre-orders are up now for for a midd-to-late September ship. Along with the album news, Chad Valley is headlining a North American tour, including a stop in Austin at Red7 on October 22.

Laid Back Rock From Air Waves

1609885_10152207578788798_394182001_nAir Waves, aka Nicole Schneit, has been making indie rock tunes of varying styles over the years, and she’s got a killer new single to share with you in the form of “Horse Race.” What I’m really digging on this track is the way that the subtle and mild vocals juxtapose so nicely with the harder elements of the song, like the steady electric guitar and the ubiquitous piano. One moment the vocals combine with the other musical elements for a laid back feel, and the next the guitars and piano and percussion seem to amp up a bit, while those vocals stay cool and calm thanks to a bit of help from Jana Hunter. Really, it’s a great indie rock song, and it’s got me excited for the release of Parting Glances, which is due out September 18th via Western Vinyl.

Get Down With Small Black

unnamed-2It’s a Thursday, so naturally you’re itching for the weekend to hurry up and get here already. What’s a better way to channel yourself into the weekend vibe other than some slick dance music? Small Black have got you covered there with this new single, “Boys Life,” which is taken from the band’s upcoming release, Best Blues, and is filled with enough synthesizer to let you make believe it’s Friday night already.  The track pretty much immediately launches into the groove, with a somewhat minimalist tone to it: though there’s a lot going on, the soundscape seems spacey other than the constant percussion blasting through in waves. Then the track really kicks into full swing and you really can’t help but shimmy along. Take a listen below and look out for Best Blues out October 16th from Jagjaguwar.

More New Teen Daze

teendazeMuch like grocery shoppers in Austin a decade ago, Teen Daze has gone organic. The latest track off the album Morning World (due 8/14) to be unveiled on the intarwebs is called “Along”. It has a dreamy light-hearted version of Pink Floyd feeling to it. It is pretty, it is different. Is this the sound in his head that synths filled before he pull it off musically or just a mindshift…

We’ll see what happens to the older material, will it be updated to be earthy, when Teen daze comes through town to play Stubb’s Jr on 9/30.

Light Music Give You Shimmering Indie Rock

9ba37457-ae47-4568-ac50-1bf866e634c0Light Music, who hail from Milwaukee, are releasing a new album next month, and have a new single of their electro rock music to share with you. “Don’t Go Quietly” starts off with urgent synth that rings out quickly, then the vocals join in, which soften the mix in their borderline folk rawness. The electric guitar adds a meandering presence to the song, as the riffs spiral outwards through the otherwise focused and intent electro rock sound. If you like this tune, Light Music‘s new album Ocean’s Daughter is out August 21st on The Record Machine.

ATX Spotlight: OBN III’s Strike Again

obnYou know ’em, you love ’em, we love ’em: local rockers OBN III‘s. They’ve been making the Austin scene a little more rock and roll for a good deal of time now and they’ve returned once more to hit us over the head with a great rock tune. “4KD” is nothing but gnarly; blistering guitars shred through from the start, and the vocals match this tone while complimenting the fast paced drums. Though a straightforward jam, you can’t help but enjoy the edgy simplicity the band brings to the song. This track is perfect for blasting through these intense summer days. Take a listen.

Doubting Thomas Cruise Control

doubtingthomasWould love to know more about the story behind the name, Doubting Thomas Cruise Control, but what I do know is that their latest single is pretty solid number in my book. It reminds me a lot of early 2000s indie rock, the kind that often showed up on Jade Tree.  It’s got a casual delivery, yet this slowcore approach to the guitar sound…and I’m a fan of both those things.  It’s another reason to keep an eye on the band as they prep the release of their new album, Remember Me John Lydon Forver; it’s being released on August 14th via our friends at Fleeting Youth Records.

ACL Single Day Tickets

2befba5e-6a7f-4a91-9771-4c275dcb0b1fNot to be out done by FFFX, ACL Fest has released the daily lineups and opened the store for single day tix. With all three day passes sold out, this is your only access to the fest barring you get brave and start jumping fences (i.e. get slapped around by security).

As for the daily lineups, Friday is pretty stacked with several of the festival band faves for Team ATH with Foo Fighters, Tame Impala, Gary Clark Jr., Albert Hammond Jr. and Mr. Billy Idol. The Strokes will finish out the fest on Sunday and Saturday seems a good night to get aftershow tickets and bail out early.

Video Premiere: Shivery Shakes “Swimming”

Shivery ShakesWe were more than happy to put out the Shivery Shakes LP, Three Waves and a Shake.  And, one of the perks of having a label associated with the site is that our bands can do whatever they want…and usually we’re pretty cool with it.  So, today we’re premiering the second video from the band’s great debut, “Swimming,” which is one of the song’s written by drummer, Marcus. It’s a pretty rad little video, and it definitely continues the great vibe from their record.  Don’t forget, you can get your hands on that pretty clear vinyl right HERE. They’ll also be throwing a fun little soiree over at Rio Rita at 9 PM tonight to celebrate the video’s release, so be sure to show up and have a few drinks with your favorite bros.
