GRMLN Announces New LP

grmlWith the last GRMLN album you could turn it up, get caught in the huge riffs and the rest faded away.  It’s a sound that plenty of people employ nowadays, but I’ve really been gravitating towards this guy’s sound.  There’s a bit of Weasel residue in the writing style, which isn’t bad in my opinion, but all indicators point towards a darker subject matter on Soon Away.  It’s a a great sound that resonates with young and old alike, so prepare yourself to enjoy another album from the band; it’s being released by Carpark Records on September 16th.

ATH Records Cancer Benefit Sale

athrecordsWhen I started ATH Records with my friend Mike, we had two rules: 1) Put out records we love 2) Work with people we love.  We’ve stuck to that, in our opinion, but now the family of one of our bands, Young Girls, are going through a hard time.  Guitarist Pete Tijerina’s brother has been diagnosed with cancer, and the costs are definitely not easy to deal with. So, since we love those guys, and they’re part of our family too, we’re going to donate 50% of all sales on ATH Records to support the Tijerina family at this time; we’ll be running this benefit for the next 3 weeks.  You can buy the Young Girls EP, Literature LP or Grape St. LP, and help support their family.  Listen to all the releases HERE and pick up one or more copies HERE.  Thanks for helping us help our family.

You can also donate directly to the family HERE.

Shy Boys to Release New 7″

shyboysI think a lot of people drastically overlooked the wonderful S/T effort from Shy Boys, but lets hope that this new 7″ they’re planning can attract more attention.  Now, if you’re looking for some guitar pop that’s heavy on distortion and power chords, then this isn’t the sort for you.  This is of the other ilk, relaxed in its entirety, with just a hint of movement coming via the riding of the cymbal. Like most of the work from the band, you just get to sit back and let the harmonies wash over you, drifting in and out of your consciousness.  You can grab the new 7″, titled 45, on August 26th from High Dive Records.

More New Music From Dear Blanca

Pobrecito - Album ArtAbout a month ago I came across South Carolina band Dear Blanca and their promising new take on this sort of poppy, folk rock music.  Today I’m excited to share with you another great track from the band called “Noma”.  Once again you will hear those folk rock tendencies that are equal parts intimate and beautiful as they are powerful and breathtaking.  I’m sure to be paying attention to these guys in the future.

Pick up new album, Pobrecito, on July29th via Post-Echo.

Broncho Band Got the Hooks

bronchoI know. This song is so last week, but it’s just too damn good to not share it again.  The stuttering opening had me from the get-go, but the off-kilter vocal swagger that unfolds as the song rolls along isn’t too shabby either.  You’re going to have a hard time ignoring Broncho on their new outing, Just Enough Hip to Be Woman, which comes to you via Dine Alone on September 16th…you should also check out their previous effort Can’t Get Past the Lips…this music is brought to you by the community that brought you greats such as Colourmusic, AAR and Other Lives…there’s something special in that Oklahoma water.

New Song from The Black Tambourines

10321639_955360484521740_5025471425869622889_oI’ve been keeping my eye on this UK act for some time, as they seemed to have something…that something special.  On this tune,The Black Tambourines still have that vibrant energy I adored when I first tune in to their music, but to a certain degree, they’ve gone in a different direction than I expected.  The guitar work is still pretty strong, and I definitely appreciate the tenacity, yet this track feels safe.  It’s got energy and style, but we’ll have to wait until their new album is completely finished before we hear how this song fits into the fold.  Until then.

New Music from Ukiah Drag

ukiahThe last time we heard from the Ukiah Drag, the band had this devilish storytelling aspect to their songwriting.  This time around, as the band readies their new album, they hold onto that demonic presence, though there’s more emphasis in the volume.  It’s like a fuck all of psych and post rock, blended into this mixture of entrancing western-sludge.  Their new record, In The Reapers Quarters will be released September 9th via Wharf Cat Records.  From the sounds of this, it’s going to be something quite different than your average fare.

Steady Groove from Childhood

childhoodIt’s been a rather slow Monday in terms of new music and whatnots, so why not throw this gem your way.  It’s the latest single from Childhood, and it hit the web late last week, offering a look at the band’s forthcoming album, Lacuna.  It took me a bit to get into this song; it didn’t hit as immediately as the bright-colored art work would have had me believe.  Instead, there’s a bubbling undercurrent of steady pop grooves, taking an approach that’s rarely used; I actually appreciate the fact that you’ve got to immerse yourself in the tune a bit.  You have time? Give it a listen; the record comes out on August 11th.

As I’m scrolling through the upcoming shows this week, I stumbled across this great bill at Mohawk on Wednesday that I must have forgotten about.  Headlining the loaded bill is longtime ATH favorite UK rockers The Crookes.  Joining the guys on the bill are fellow ATH favorite Young Buffalo and local artist Stoney.  This should make for a great middle of the week show to start your weekend early.  See you there?

Another Tune from Sam Coffey and Iron Lungs

samIt seems like Sam Coffey and Iron Lungs are walking a perfect line between my past and present.  Their earlier single, “Calgary Hill” sounded like perfect power-pop, blending melody into huge guitar chords.  Now, on the next single, they take on an old school mod feel, like The Jam kicking it with the Clash; it’s a fine mixture.  This is one of the great things about the band’s latest release, Gates of Hell, there are great nods to various genres, but it never seems to tire on the ears of the listener.  The album is out this week on Southpaw Records.
