Song Premiere: Lake Effect

1898053_551850284914387_1205701683_nIt’s a day of exclusive song premieres on ATH, and I’m pumped to be sharing yet another one today from New Jersey based boys Lake Effect.  These guys have a knack for creating this raw, almost lackadaisical sounding, punk rock themed songs that I’m finding irresistible today.  Our premiere called “Molecules” is the definition of slacker rock.  One can almost see the band holding a beer in their hand while jamming out to this one at a smoke filled dive bar in the hidden corners of their north eastern home state.  Stay tuned as we hear more from these guys.  Let’s hope that we do.

Date 6/11/14
Location Holy Mountain
Doors 9pm
Tickets $10 @ Transmission

A great show is going down on Wednesday night at Holy Mountain with two up and coming bands that have previously received the ATH seal of approval.  Headliner Painted Palms is a band I caught during SXSW and was pleasantly surprised that the band could recreate their electronic sound in a live setting.  Of course the show lineup gets even better with Shy Boys, who have been talked about on numerous occasions here on our site.  See ya there?

New Music from Crystal Stilts

crystalI’ve long been a fan of Crystal Stilts, so I’m definitely looking forward to what the band brings to the table on their next week.  This tune gives us a little bit of a peek, as the band has said this single is a step in a more rocking direction, which is how they’re approaching their next album.  I love the deep tone of the vocals, especially when the track takes more of a crooning approach.  There’s still hint of the band’s psychedelic roots in some of the guitar work, though the clarity in the song’s structure is pretty surprising.  It’s such a great tune, you’ll want to grab it now.

On the Road: Shivery Shakes Tour Diary (Part 3 & 4)

Campfire_Chapel HillWe’re continuing our series with our friends in Shivery Shakes, wrapping up their stories from the road.  Since the end of their tour hit the weekend, we held on to both of their later entries to combine them into two.  We’ve got words from William, and Andrew, so check out how the road has treated these lads.  They’re back in town now, so hopefully we’ll have a nice little wrap-up of their experiences, but for now, check their latest entries.   Read more

Song Premiere: Dear Blanca

OHDHhpiToday I’ve been given the pleasure of premiering a song by up and coming band Dear Blanca.  Now the group hails from South Carolina, which isn’t always known as an indie-musical hot bed, and clearly a southern leaning folk sound can be found here to align with their home state.  Brand new single found below, “Boulders”, is sonic evidence of their southern roots.  It’s a track that could immediately be compared to, and possibly even inspired by, indie greats NMH.  The slow start at the beginning that eventually builds up to an intense, emotionally jarring ending makes for a truly special track.  We’re please to be the first ones to share this with you.

The band have a new album called Pobrecito due out on July 29th via Post-Echo.[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/151735702″ params=”color=ff9900&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_artwork=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Another Jam from Street Eaters

streetIt’s Friday, so I wanted to make sure you were excited about your weekend; I couldn’t think of a better way than to offer up this gritty, feel-good tune from Street Eaters.  In the wake of Jack White complaining about two-pieces, these two seem to have things down tight, with a jittery bass line and cymbal-infused drumming bringing plenty of hooks to the table. Megan March has vocals a la Vivian Girls, so you know there’s going to be a whole audience already waiting for music just like this.  You’ll be able to get their album Blood Muscles Bones on June 17th via Nervous Intent Records.

Austin Weekend Spotlight: The Non-X Games Exclusive

austinMan.  The festivals and large events in this town never cease, and while I appreciate that, I’m a bit sick and tired of it all.  Are you in the same boat? Perhaps you want to carefully venture downtown and catch some live music?  You’re lucky, as the local bands are bringing you some great line-ups all over the map this weekend.  Here’s  a quick look at where you can go. Austin Spotlight: The Big Fist

geoffYesterday our friends over at RoA tossed up this great track from The Big Fist, which is the new project of Geoff Earle, who has been one of our long time Austin favorites.  He’s a super talented dude, and after the disbanding of his last group, Freshmillions, he seems to have found his voice again (you know, in case he ever lost it).  It’s a funky track with rad samples and a smooth vocal performance; it just goes to show that there’s hidden gems around every corner in Austin.  We’ll keep you posted on the band when more news comes our way.

More New Music from Alex G

dsuThere’s a lot of music coming out right now, but none is more fascinating to me, perhaps, than that of Alex G.  He’s a crafty songwriter that has amassed a large following rather quickly, though there’s still quite a few who aren’t aware of his gifts.  He’s signed on with Orchid Tapes (another hit for the label) to release his album DSU; it’s filled with these carefully drawn musical vignettes, steeped in oddity and pop traditions.  This song is a touch more quiet than others, but it still encompasses that beauty that’s kept me enraptured. New Music from The Bilinda Butchers

Autosave-File vom d-lab2/3 der AgfaPhoto GmbHIf you’re into lo-fidelity pop music or quirk-pop, you should really keep your focus on Orchid Tapes.  It seems like every band they’re supporting is incredible, and it looks to be the same from The Bilinda Butchers.  This group has a little bit more of a straight-forward approach, as opposed to an Alex G or Elvis Depressedly, but that makes the songs immediately accessible, using dreamy guitar lines and warm vocals.  You’ll be able to grab the band’s Heaven LP from the label on July 15th, so keep an eye out for more good tuens from the label.
