Show Pics: Blackbird Blackbird @ Johnny Brenda’s (7/1)

Blackbird BlackbirdAnother business trip meant finding another foreign place to catch a show. After Denver had zero on the schedule, Philly delivered with a nice little offering at a venue called Johnny Brenda’s. We had locals called The Interest Group opening for Beat Culture who was touring with Blackbird Blackbird. I ventured out after the crushing defeat of the fighting Tim Howards to the Fishtown Hood and got my shwerve on with some samples and beats.

Lush New Music from Musee Mecanique

museeOrchestral rock music is my jam! Okay, not all of it, obviously, but I’m really enjoying this track from Musee Mecanique; it reminds me an awful lot of the sort of music being created by current Portland residents, Other Lives.  The opening to this tune trickles in carefully, with intricately picked guitar strings and a floating vocal. However, the tune gradually progresses, with a rolling drum bit and increased volume, as well as instrumentation.  It’s quite a startling piece of work, which makes the announcement of their new album, From Shores of Sleep, even better; it’ll be out on Tender Loving Empire come August 26th.

Show Preview: Sweet Spirit Residency @ the Blackheart (7/5 + Saturday in July)

1609879_544202789008542_1460629855_nFrom the ashes rises the phoenix…or something like that right?

Having one of your favorite bands break up is always a bummer, but sometimes you get lucky and end up with a new favorite cobbled from the pieces of the old. Saturday at the Blackheart two bands will stand as a reminder that great things can be built out of broken pieces.
July 5th at the Blackheart is the first of Sweet Spirit’s residency shows. Sweet Spirit was formed after the demise of local favorite powerhouse Bobby Jealously. Commandeered by the energetic front women Sabrina Ellis, Sweet Spirit is poised to absolutely destroy the Austin music scene. Sabrina Ellis’ melodies are immediately engaging, and combined with her clever pop lyrics have a way of latching onto the brains of listeners. Ellis is backed on stage by an equally talented band. Sweet Spirit is one of those rare finds where the entirety of the backing band is talented enough to each front one of their own groups, and with Ellis at the helm the sum is certainly greater than the parts. Sweet Spirit takes the inside stage at midnight every Saturday this month, so no there are no excuses to miss this band.

Another highlight of the night is sure to be Lӧwin. Fans of the now defunct the Couch already know what a vocal powerhouse Sara Houser is. In Lӧwin, Sara Houser takes the guitar heavy sounds of the Couch and condenses them into more focused, sculpted songs. There’s no fat or gristle on the recently released two tracks Lobo and Heave Ho. Lӧwin plays on the inside stage at 8:30, and if I could make a prediction that will be one sweaty, rockin’ room.

Wunder Wunder Finds a Home and Offers Dream Single

wunderwunderThe duo of Wunder Wunder has found a home, in LA, and with Dovecote Records. Their debut album for the record is said to be informed by the group’s move from Australia to LA, but if you’re asking me, it’s got a more European vibe to it.  The harmonies in the song have a nice windy breeze to them, while the electronic beats bubble and bounce beneath the mix.  It’s a great track to kick on while you’re relaxing this July 4th with your friends and family. Look for Infinite to win you over on July 15th. Plus this photo of the two has a cat. People love cats.

Show Preview: Big Bill + Criminal Hygiene @ Mohawk (7/6)

showposterWe know you’re all looking forward to the 4th of July and whatnot, but we want to give you plenty of time to plan your Sunday evening.  We’re sponsoring a great little rock n’ roll show with a bunch of our friends, both in and out of town; it takes place at the Mohawk at 9 PM.  Big Bill, one of our local favorites, is headlining the gig, and it’ll be one of your last chances to catch them before they embark on their big US tour.  Also, rocking the night will be our favorites, Criminal Hygiene, who are coming all the way from LA to grace us with their presence; they’ll even be tending bar before the show at 6, so be sure to come hang out with the band.  But, you better get there early to see Pharaohs, who’ve been banging out power-pop ditties for some time in our fair city, always winning us over.  It’s sure to be a great night, so join us, please.

New Music from Naomi Punk

naomiIt’s been several months since we’ve gotten further word on the impending release of the new Naomi Punk album, but today we can rejoice with their latest single.  I can hear similarities to the blistering noise that Ty Segall would bring, though there’s this bridled restraint here in this song, with the group pulling back every time you expect them to blast forward.  It leaves you with an unsettling piece of post-rock, which is, after all, the best sort.  Look for more great songs on the band’s album, Television Man, when it’s released by Captured Tracks on August 5th.

Spooky Track From Truthers

140617-truthersTruthers is yet another Brooklyn band we can add to the long list of groups we need to be listening to from the area.  Today the group are sharing with us this sweet and spooky new track called “Most Ghouls Agree”.  The track has a sort of throwback style to it similar to something you might have heard in the 50s doo wop age.  Enjoy.

A pre-order for a 7″ featuring this track and one other is now up at Glad Tidings Records.
