Show Preview: Dub Thompson + Ought @ Holy Mountain (7/3)

dubIn a bone-headed move that I accept full responsibility for, I completely slept on the Dub Thompson album, 9 Songs. I’ve since had it on a steady rotation after it’s release; there’s elements of noise, psychedelic hints and just weirdo pop, so of course I’m obsessing.  The band brings their show into town this Thursday night, and you’ve all got July 4th off, so you’ve got no excuse to stay out late and enjoy the music over at Holy Mountain.  Also, you’ll get to see Montreal’s Ought, who received the arbitrary “Best New Music” tag from P4k, if that matters to you.  Their angular post-rock seems like it’s built for a pulsating live show of rhythm and grooves.  You can buy yourself $10 tickets HERE.  Hope to see you guys out so we can celebrate freedom together at midnight.

Auroravare – s/t

aurora

Ever find yourself getting lost in a song, only to snap back and realize you’ve been somewhere else entirely for the past few minutes? Maybe you were walking down the street with your headphones in and looked up just in time to avoid walking into that phone pole. Or maybe you were studying in the library and looked up to see everyone was staring while you were sub consciously fist pumping the air like some Jersey Shore idiot. Admit it, if you’re reading this you are enough of a music lover to have been there, probably more than once. Auroravore is one of those bands that will take you to that place.
While the band has been a mainstay on the Austin music scene for long enough to be called veterans, they had a quiet year until the end of 2013 when they released their eponymous debut album in December. The album is a cohesive 9 song piece of work. On first impression it immediately evokes Of Montreal’s groovy psych pop and the pastoral layers and playful instrumental melodies of Air. The heart of this band is in the interplay between the keyboard and guitar, and anyone who has had the pleasure of seeing this band live can attest to the fact that they bring a Fender Rhodes and Moog Voyager to every show. In this day and age of cheap, light, and versatile digital synths and keyboard, lugging vintage gear around to shows is a tonal testament to dedication.
Auroravore is successful in creating a unified aural feel to the album. They never lose their groove or fall out of the pocket. Song after song the Keyboard and guitars make parallel runs evoking electronic droplets of notes. The tone of the music is a cascading groove of layers. At times, this is a double edged sword. After multiple listens, I found my attention beginning to drift. My “in the zone” would occasionally turn into a “zoned out”. While tonal cohesion can be a strong point, looking forward this band will need to grow out of the eighth note pentatonic melody lines if they want to maintain the audience that this album could attract.
The key track for me in this album is “Who Goes Home”. While there are certainly more danceable songs (Falls Down or Comfortable), this track is a perfect slow burner, mirroring the lyrical subject with the musical arrangement. The lead vocals play a call and response with the keyboard and guitar, alternating a lilting falsetto narrative verse with a percussive quarter beat guitar hit. All of this energy and emotion is wonderfully curated by the drummer’s groove. The song culminates with repetive phrasing of the track title, and cadences with a final instrumental ascending melody, leaving us wondering who went home.

Jenn Ghetto’s S Signs to Hardly Art

sIt should come as no surprise that Jenn Ghetto’s S project has landed on Hardly Art Records.  After all, it’s the same label that re-issued some of the work of her earlier band, Carissa’s Wierd, thus she keeps things in the family, which is always good.  Her new work, which began as a bedroom project, four albums ago, has blossomed into a really powerful pop outfit, not too far off from the likes of Tegan and Sara.  Her album Cool Choices is due on the label on September 23rd, so don’t be surprised if it wins you over.

Quick Rocker from EULA

eulaThe last few days I went a little soft on you, which is completely fair, but I wanted to toss out something a bit heavier for you today.  This jam from EULA is about as noisy as they come, filled with crashing drum work and heavy-handed guitar work.  All the while there’s this sporadic shouting coming from Alyse Lamb,  almost being used as an extra instrument in the decibel factor.  The band’s new 7″ will be coming out on July 15th via Bloodmoss Records, so if loud is your thing, you’ll find it here.

Another Tune from Rivergazer

rivergazedA few weeks ago we brought you news that our friends at Father Daughter Records had signed on to release the new album from Rivergazer.  Their first single was spirited and quite playful.  Today we get a different look at the band, as they smooth things out for a more stretched out sound, one revolving around the band’s musicianship as opposed to infinite hooks.  There’s a bit of an organ playing in the background, which is a nice touch that always does it for me.  You’ll be able to pick Random Nostalgia from the label on August 12th.

Tuesday Night in ATX: Two Great Shows

amenLooking at the schedule, there’s tons of great acts gracing our town this week, and Tuesday night is no exception.   You’ve got a couple of great traveling shows coming through, one featuring a great local act that you should keep your eyes on.  Amen Dunes comes into town with Axxa/Abraxas in tow, which is likely to be a huge success for both bands.  They’re both coming in support of recent 2014 releases, with AD celebrating Love, and Axxa performing their self-titled debut; that show takes place over at the Hotel Vegas.  But, don’t sleep on Streets of Laredo, who’ll be headlining a gig at the Mohawk with one of our favorites, Reservations.  Looks like a great evening for us all…so be sure to partake in the good music. Here’s a tune from Axxa/Abraxas to get you into the mood.

Dreamy Girl Pop from Tape Waves

tw_letyougo_coverThe image on the cover of the new album from Tape Waves is quite fitting for their upcoming release, Let You Go.  It’s five palm trees stranded amidst a fairly cloudless sky. It’s an image that leans towards warm climes and ocean breezes, which is precisely what the latest single from the duo sounds like. There’s a casual bounce from the drums and pristine angular guitar work while Kim Weldin whispers melodious vocal atop it all.  You need tunes for your trip to the beach? Then be sure to grab this album from Bleeding Gold Records on July 28th.

Indiepop Delight from Franny & Zooey

frannyGlad to see that Dufflecoat Records are still one of the best at releasing some of the most delectable indiepop records out there.  This last week they announced that they’ve agreed to to released the Bottled Up & Ready to Go EP from Franny & Zooey.  This first single is filled with jangling guitar lines and steady drumming.  Even more surprising to me is that the duo hails from the Dominican Republic; this is not the sound I typically associate with the country, though you can’t keep pop fans down, it seems.  Enjoy yourself today.

Change of Pace from The High Wire

highwireWent a little power-pop heavy this morning, so why not offer up a little turn towards a pop-centric world with the latest single from The High Wire.  I’ve written about the group before, and I’m really excited to get a full listen to their latest LP, Found in Honey. The song opens softly, with a focus on the angelic vocals before a synthesized beat kicks in to drive the song forward.   There’s explosions of exuberance here and there, with my particular favorite moment coming just after the 3 minute mark.  If you love what you hear, their album will be out on July 14th, so be sure to grab it.

Power Pop from Sugar Stems

sugarIf you’re a music fan like me, then perhaps nothing works you up quite like huge hooks and soaring melodies.  If that’s the case, then you’re going to love this new single from Sugar Stems.  It’s our first listen to the band’s new album, Only Come Out at Night, and I’ll be damned if this isn’t the perfectly executed anthemic power-pop that warms my heart.  Betsy’s vocals have a slight hint of attitude, but the rest of the group is just kicking out these huge sounds; it’s the most polished bit of power-pop I’ve heard in some time.  You can grab their new record from reliable Dirtnap Records on July 22nd.
