New Music from The Shifting Sands

shiftingsandsI first heard about the Shifting Sands via the blog, When You Motor Away, and they again pointed me in the direction of the New Zealand act yesterday.  There’s definitely a casual-pop feel to this, with melodious guitar parts and a softened vocal, but I’m in love with the way that the violin adds a perfect accent to this single.  It’s something that typically isn’t associated with such simple stylings, but it adds the perfect touch; it’s the details that make us fall in love. They’ve temporarily titled the record Cosmic Radio Station, and it’s set to be released by Fishrider Records this year.

Evan Ønly Has An 80’s Hit

evan onlyAdmit it, you like to put on those leg warmers and pretend to be in Flashdance on cold days like this. Or is it just me? #mollyringwalddance

I have an affection for 80’s wave dance hits because I’m old. When something like this hits the inboxes at ATH, it is sent to me for approval. I approve of this hit from Evan Ønly. Gentle synth sensibilities with just enough of the Italian Disco thing going on; it will elicit the proper head nod and shoulder shimmy. Evan Ønly is actually Evan Brody, a founder of Underwater Peoples. This is the lead track from a solo EP called No Matter What due on February 18th.

Spanish Music from Juan Wauters

juanwautersIf you know the homies at ATH personally, you likely know that we speak a little bit of the Spanish; one of us  might even teach a little bit of the Spanish to kids.  That being said, it makes it easy for us to understand the lyrics to the new single from Juan Wauters, who’s stepping away from the Beets for the release of North American Poetry.  I won’t let you in on the lyrics, as that might take away the fun for you, but the title is translated to “I listen a lot.”  The music is definitely relaxed guitar, with a focus on the recording of the actual strumming as it echoes in the mix.  You’ll have a chance to get the album on February 4th from Captured Tracks.

Gaze Type Tune from Nothing

nothingThis new track from Philadelphia’s Nothing is one of those tunes that you’ve really got to turn up loud to complete let it wash over you, or wash you away…depending on what you’re looking for in the tune.  There’s distortion on the guitar from the get-go, swirling, though they definitely have a 90s alternative bent at the root. Then, just as you’re blasting off, they flip things on you, and leave you in a free-fall of atmospheric noise and quieted vocals.  It should make for quite a listen when the band release Guilty of Everything via Relapse Records on March 4th.

New Pop Tune from Tacocat

tacocatYou’re probably going to look twice when you look at the title of Tacocat‘s newest single, but that’s entirely the point, or so I think.  Tacocat have infectious hooks and power-pop licks to make them supremely accessible, but at the same time, they’re not taking themselves entirely too seriously. They’re out to kick out tracks that envelop the fun side of being in a rock n’ roll band, even if it means writing a tune about your period.  If this is your style of music, then you’ll need to get your hands on NVM when it’s released by Hardly Art on February 25th.

Playful Track from Astrid Swan

astridThose of you who aren’t living in Finland probably have no idea who Astrid Swan is, and that’s okay, though sad in the long run.  The track below comes from her 5th album, Astrid4, and this is one of the many great moments you’ll find.  Her voice is quite strong, which is probably what first attracted me to the singer’s work, but the accompaniment here is what completely sold me.  While the stile is different, incorporating various horns and woodwinds provides listeners with something that’s rare in pop music…a classical touch that’s creative and not forced.  You can pick up Astrid4 from Soliti Music now.

Catchy Tune From The Notwist

524713_10151949823411108_1751919683_nI’ve long been a fan of The Notwist, and hearing news of their return this year has peaked some major musical intrigue in my mind.  I love the pop sensibilities here with it’s hurried beat accompanied by the always smooth and calming vocals of Acher.  This is already a front runner for one of my tracks of the tear.  Duh.

We’ll be anxiously awaiting the February 25th release date of new album Close to the Glass via Sub Pop.

More Sweet Jams From Gardens & Villa

Gardens & VillaI’m a bit late on this new number from Gardens & Villa, but this matters not to me as it is just too good to pass up.  Be ready to dance, sing along, and have an all around good time as you jam out to “Colony Glen”.  This song comes after we’ve already shared with you guys the impeccable track “Bullet Train”.

Once again, you can pick up new album Dunes on February 4th via Secretly Canadian.

Sharp Rocker from The Coathangers

coathangersAh yes, the full length effort I’ve been waiting for from The Coathangers is just around the corner! I love the bratty vocal approach that works in conjunction with the jagged buzzing guitar chords, but just as that puts you into a stomping trance, the ladies blast off into a catch little chorus featuring classic “whoas.”  Like most great things, it flirts with hooks and danger, yet remains focused throughout the song.  Suicide Squeeze Records will be releasing the new album, Suck My Shirt, on March 18th.
